Wor l, YELLOWSTONE wos decommissioned ond returned to the Shipping Boord for use. Her
subsequent tour wos short lived due to running oground in the Azores. Although listed os
"stronded" ond o totol loss, oll 45 of her crew wos sofe.
The second YELLOWSTONE CAD-275 wos commissioned in Jonuory, 1946. For 28 yeors she tended
the destroyers of the Atlontic Fleet. During this period she eorned o reputotion of dependobility
ond reliobility, the niclsnome "Old Foithful" ond the coveted bottle efficiency "E" oword ten
times. She wos decommissioned on September 11, 1974.
The present YELLOWSTONE CAD-415, commissioned on June28, 1980, is the first tender to be
equipped with o destroyer refueling rig copoble of sending refueling probe, robb ond NATO
refueling couplings to other ships.
YELLOWSTONE hos porticipoted in severol multi-notionol novol exercises, providing mobile
repoir ond logistics support. During the NATO exercise Oceon Venture "81", the Repoir
Deportment, under simuloted wortime conditions, completed over 100jobs during o three doy
onchoroge in Scopoflow, Scotlond. During United Effort!Teomwork "84", YELLOWSTONE
completed over SOO jobs, sending Tiger Teoms of repoir personnel to other ships ond providing
logistic support by tronsferring repoir ports ond supplies ond pumping fuel ond woter to ships
of the tosls force.

The USS YELLOWSTONE, o new destroyer tender, inherits the nome ond troditions of two
former ships. They eorned the sobriquet "Old Foithful" for their long ond dedicoted service
to the fleet. The geyser contoinment, o Y-shopedfheroldic chorge colled o poll, is symbolic
of support. The color red is for heot ond energy. The verticol bonds ond the scolloped white
ond blue cloud forms ore indicotive of the upword surge of steom ond woter, in ollusion
to the fomous geyser "Old FoithfuI."
The seo horse is symbolic of the bosic mission of the destroyer tender, the furnishing of supplies
ond services to the fleet. The trident is symbolic of novol power ond outhority. The heod of
the trident suggests the letter the coveted bottle efficiency which the Second
YELLOWSTONE eorned ten times.

Captain Steven L. Turner, anative of Danville. Virginia, served as an Ensign aboard
USS CONWAY CDD-5075 after graduating from the U.S. Merchant Marine
Academy in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. He then attended
the Naval Destroyer School and upon completing his tudies, reported to USS
HOLDER CDD-8425 as Engineer Officer. 1 ' A
Following his tour on HOLDER, Captain Turner earned his Masters Degree in
Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Carolina while teaching
students in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps KNROTCJ program. He was
then assigned as Commanding Officer of USS COCONINO COUNTY QLST-6033,
and later as CommandingOfficer of USS OUTAGAMIE COUNTY CLST-10735.
both homeported in Guam, operating almost. exclusively in the rivers and along the
coast of Vietnam. - ' ., W n ' .
In 1970. Captain Turner entered the naval War College and upon completion of
training. served as Executive Officer and later as Commanding Officer in USS
BRUMBY CFF-10445. After hisiitour on BRUMBY, he attended Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute from 1973 to 1974 and earned an MBA. A tour at the Naval
Sea Systems Command followed. prior to assignment as Commanding officer of USS
FISKE CDD-8423 . . ' A 1
Following his duty on FISKE, Captain Turner graduated from the Industrial College
of the Armed Forces before serving three years as Engineer Officer of USS MIDWAY
CCV-415. just rior t ' ' - I

Cawptain Turner served briefly on the staff of the Command of the Naval Material
Command. . c ,
gaptlain Turner's personal .awards include the Legion of Merit, the MeritoriouS

Captain Turner is married to the former Louise Mougeot of Montreal. Canada. They
have three daughters: Melanie, Natalie and Suzanne. A M
