COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN J. R. CAMPBELL, USN ) a II«L Tf a. MJ 1 Captain Campbell was reared in Los Angeles, California and was graduated from John Brown University, Siloam Springs, Arkansas in 1956 receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Following graduation from Officer's Candidate School, Captain Campbell started his naval career in USS PRICHETT (DD-561) marking the first in a lengthy sequence of sea tours in the Pacific Fleet. Captain Campbell was a plank owner on USS TOPEKA (CLG-8) when that ship was recommissioned as a missile cruiser in I960. Later, upon completion of a year’s study at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, he served as a test coordinator at the Pacific Missile Range then returned to sea as a Staff Material Officer for Commander Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-ONE. He served as Engineer Officer in USS BOSTON (CA-69) when that ship participated as a unit of the U.S. Seventh Fleet in support of action against North Vietnam in 1968-69. He later served as Assistant Repair Superintendent at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard and as Executive Officer of the newly constructed USS WABASH (AOR-5) in 1971- 73. He served as the last Commanding Officer of USS NAVASOTA (AO-106) before that ship was turned over the Military Sealift Command for the further Pacific Fleet logistics service in 1975. Before receiving orders to command YELLOWSTONE. Captain Campbell served as a Senior Examiner with the Pacific Fleet Propulsion Examining Board and as Engineer Officer. USS CORAL SEA (CV-43). Captain Campbell has been awarded two Navy Commendation Medals, a Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V , a Navy Unit Commendation and has earned the following Campaign and Service Medals-. Battle Efficiency E , Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal (Qemoy-Matsu). Vietnam Service Medal (sixth award). Expert Rifle Medal, Expert Pistol Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Captain Campbell is married to the former Mary West of Grand Rapids. Michigan. They have three daughters, Diana. Sandra, and Julia bom in 1958. I960, and 1966, respectively.

Commander Laurence J. Gionet. Jr., USN graduated from Catawba College. Salisbury. North Carolina in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education. Commander Gionet is a graduate of Officer Candidate School. Newport. Rhode Island. His first duty assignment was a one (I) year unaccompanied tour as assistant MPS in USS ANNAPOLIS (AGMR-I), the ship permanently deployed to the Western Pacific. In February 1961, Commander Gionet reported to the U.S. Naval Station. May-port. Florida for duty as Assistant Personnel Officer. Executive Officer Commander Laurence J. Gionet. Jr.. USN In November 1968 he was assigned to USS WILLIAM H. STANDLEY (DLG-31) as Navigator and Administrative Officer. After an eighteen month tour in STANDLEY. which included a nine (9) month Western Pacific deployment. Commander Gionet attended Destroyer School followed by assignment in November 1970 to USS RICHARD E. KRAUS (DD-849) as Operations Officer, seeing KRAUS through a regular shipyard overhaul, refresher training and a Middle East deployment. He was detached from RICHARD E. KRAUS in August 1971 and assumed command of USS GREEN BA Y (PG-IOI) in November 1971 After a twelve month tour as Commanding Officer of Green Bay he was assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy. Annapolis. Maryland. where he served as a Navigation Instructor, a Company Officer and as Administrative Officer. Office of the Commandant of Midshipmen. In August 1977, he commenced the courses of instruction at the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk. Virginia. Following graduation from AFSC and schooling enroute. he reported aboard USS DONALD B. BEARY (FF-I0S5) as Executive Officer. After an 18 month tour in DONALD B. BEARY. which included a deployment to the Mediterranean. Commander Gionet was assigned as PXO USS YELLOWSTONE (AD-41). Commander Gionet's permanent home is Jacksonville Beach. Florida. He is married to the former Phyllis Jean Robinson of Pennsville. New Jersey and they have two sons. Larry and Michael.
