I 28 Yavapai College is located deep in the heart of Rough Rider country - Prescott, Arizona. Bucky O'Neill and his Rough Riders trained for the Spanish-American VVar on the hill directly behind the dormitory, The four rnain campus buildings were constructed over the Rough Rider's former parade grounds. Due to this history, Yavapai College's mascot and annual have been designated the ROUGH RIDER. Prescott is surrounded by many interesting and historical sitesg such as Ft. Misery located by the first territorial Governors Mansion pictured on the opposite page. Other locales oi interest are illustrated throughout the book.

News if - we :JE Q Ig as 9 at if . -I M f Sunday, September 20, 1970, Yavapai College was officially born in dedication ceremonies on campus. Governor Jack Williams was guest speaker for the event. In addressing himself to the administration and faculty of Yavapai College, he stressed the role these play in the preparation of students for the future. He said, You are educating the leaders of tomorrow. For the moment, you are shaping the student's world but in a very few years it is he who will shape your world. Dr. John W. Barnes, president of Yavapai College, was master of ceremonies for the dedication. In his dedication address he stressed the future when he said, lt is not what has been done but what can be done! Dr. Fred Wheadon, chairman, Yavapai College Board of Governors, in his dedication speech reviewed how Yavapai College came into being. The official founding of the college took place in 1966 with the first classes being held in temporary quarters from the opening day, September 29, 1969, until classes began a gradual move-in on campus in February, 1970. Other speakers on the program were Dr. George Spikes, chairman of Arizona State Board of Directors for Junior Colleges: Dr. L. B. Blanchard, Yavapai County Representative on Arizona State Board of Directors for Junior Colleges, and Dr. Taylor Hicks, Ex-Yavapai County Representative on Arizona State Board of Directors for Junior Colleges. For the musical portion of the program, Mr. James Burns directed the Yavapai College Mixed Chorus in the National Anthem, Sine Nomine by Vaughn Williams: God Bless America by Berlin Ringwaldg Aquarius-Let the Sunshine In by Rado-Ragni and MacDermotg Eternal Father, Strong to Save by Dykes-Whiting and Hamilton: and God of Our Fathers by Roberts-Warren. Preceding the introductions by Dr. Barnes, Mr. James Born, Prescott musician presented a recital of organ music. The presentation of the colors was handled by the Prescott Platoon, Arizona Army National Guard. The Reverend Mr. Richard S. Anderson, pastor, Trinity Presbyterian Church, offered the invocation. More than 1,000 Yavapai County citizens attended the dedication ceremonies as Yavapai College became the tenth junior college in Arizona. fi l
