Blen Freestone The Yavapai College basketball team began its history on a successful note this year playing a fine 19 win, 8 loss overall season, with a 10 win, 4 loss conference record. ln early season non-conference play, Yavapai showed potential, winning the Rough Rider Invitational Tournament. The Riders lost their initial conference encounter to Mesa Community College but the determined cagers came back to win nine conference games in a row and take over first place slot in the conference. Mesa again beat the Riders by a slim 65-63 decision to end their winning streak. Two games later Arizona Western defeated the cold shooting Yavapai team to put Mesa, Arizona Western and Yavapai in a three way tie for the league lead. After the Rough Riders won two more games, Glendale Community College upset the Riders to put them out of the regular season race. The Region 1 Playoffs at Mesa Community College saw the Rough Riders once again face the Mesa l-loKams and once again go down in defeat 72-66. Arizona Western defeated Mesa to take its second consecutive league title. Yavapai squeezed by Snow College of Utah 79-77 for the third place slot in the playoffs. The Rough Riders are to be congratulated for their uncommon first year success.
