Operated livestock newspaper, Hoof and Horn. Acquired nickname, Buckey, from his fondness for faro. also called Buck the tiger, Became a probate judge in Yavapai County 1886. Elected sheriff 1888. Ran for delegate to Congress, Populist ticket, 78.94 and 1896- unsuccessfully. Elected mayor of Prescott 1897. Became the first Volunteer accepted into federal service for the war with Spain April 29, 18.98. Captain 0'Neill, Commander of 94' Troop, first Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, was killed in action July 1, 1898.

The Buckey O'Neill Statue has been a Prescott landmark since it's dedication on July 1, 1907. The monument, created by sculptor Solon Borglum, is erected close to the spat where the Volunteers had lined up in the plaza to listen to Governor McCordfs farewell and receive their flag on May 5, 1898. Although it was not originally intended to portray one man-the monument was designed to honor all the Arizona Rough Riders-the spirit of the hell-for-leather cavalryman is distinctly O'Neill's.
