Governor Jack Williams Granite Creek Prescott was developing rapidly: On December 29, 1863, the territorial governor's party arrived in the newly created Arizona territory. That same year the Walker party had discovered gold on Weaver, Groom, Lynx, and Granite Creeks, at or near Ft. Whipple. On January 22, 1864, Gov. Goodwin arrived at Ft. Whipple. In May, the seat ot government was moved from the fort to a spot approximately 18 miles to the southwest, and by July, the town was taking shape on Granite Creek. On May 30, 1864 the citizens held a meeting on Granite Creek and established the town, which was to be named Prescott, in honor of the historian William l-lickling Prescott.
