News if - we :JE Q Ig as 9 at if . -I M f Sunday, September 20, 1970, Yavapai College was officially born in dedication ceremonies on campus. Governor Jack Williams was guest speaker for the event. In addressing himself to the administration and faculty of Yavapai College, he stressed the role these play in the preparation of students for the future. He said, You are educating the leaders of tomorrow. For the moment, you are shaping the student's world but in a very few years it is he who will shape your world. Dr. John W. Barnes, president of Yavapai College, was master of ceremonies for the dedication. In his dedication address he stressed the future when he said, lt is not what has been done but what can be done! Dr. Fred Wheadon, chairman, Yavapai College Board of Governors, in his dedication speech reviewed how Yavapai College came into being. The official founding of the college took place in 1966 with the first classes being held in temporary quarters from the opening day, September 29, 1969, until classes began a gradual move-in on campus in February, 1970. Other speakers on the program were Dr. George Spikes, chairman of Arizona State Board of Directors for Junior Colleges: Dr. L. B. Blanchard, Yavapai County Representative on Arizona State Board of Directors for Junior Colleges, and Dr. Taylor Hicks, Ex-Yavapai County Representative on Arizona State Board of Directors for Junior Colleges. For the musical portion of the program, Mr. James Burns directed the Yavapai College Mixed Chorus in the National Anthem, Sine Nomine by Vaughn Williams: God Bless America by Berlin Ringwaldg Aquarius-Let the Sunshine In by Rado-Ragni and MacDermotg Eternal Father, Strong to Save by Dykes-Whiting and Hamilton: and God of Our Fathers by Roberts-Warren. Preceding the introductions by Dr. Barnes, Mr. James Born, Prescott musician presented a recital of organ music. The presentation of the colors was handled by the Prescott Platoon, Arizona Army National Guard. The Reverend Mr. Richard S. Anderson, pastor, Trinity Presbyterian Church, offered the invocation. More than 1,000 Yavapai County citizens attended the dedication ceremonies as Yavapai College became the tenth junior college in Arizona. fi l Q .N . -.J ' .' 1. ov- -1 L, M .. f2?ssffl'-' -' uf- or , W i Vg if f .-Q d 1-up A f , If The Honorable Governor Jack Williams delivered the dedication uclclress September 20, 1970. . 5' ff is 1 if-1 5 J, N. if 'iw 'Sli' 4: -16 N 5 ff , -Ct xxx S i. 4 i S m J -D 4 g Q 4 I XX, 1 5 Us ,EE . 13 Q in f -r ,fflg 4' Mg . Governor Jack Williams Granite Creek Prescott was developing rapidly: On December 29, 1863, the territorial governor's party arrived in the newly created Arizona territory. That same year the Walker party had discovered gold on Weaver, Groom, Lynx, and Granite Creeks, at or near Ft. Whipple. On January 22, 1864, Gov. Goodwin arrived at Ft. Whipple. In May, the seat ot government was moved from the fort to a spot approximately 18 miles to the southwest, and by July, the town was taking shape on Granite Creek. On May 30, 1864 the citizens held a meeting on Granite Creek and established the town, which was to be named Prescott, in honor of the historian William l-lickling Prescott. Service to students is the main reason for th existence of the Counseling Center at Yavapai College according to Mr. Bill Gipe, chairman of the Guidanc and Counseling Department. Usually a student's first Contact with the Counseling Center is at the time of registration. The first step in the registration process is when the student meets with a counselor to plan a course of study. Instead of a rnass registration procedure, Yavapai College believes in an individual approach. This is accomplished by having a half-hour to an hour interview in which the student and counselor plan the courses that the student will ta ke. lf a student plans on transfering to another college or university, much care is taken to be sure that the courses he will take at Yavapai College will be appropriate for the courses of study. The Counseling Center also participates in re- gistering students for courses in the communities outside of Prescott. The Buckey O'Neill Statue has been a Prescott landmark since it's dedication on July 1, 1907. The monument, created by sculptor Solon Borglum, is erected close to the spat where the Volunteers had lined up in the plaza to listen to Governor McCordfs farewell and receive their flag on May 5, 1898. Although it was not originally intended to portray one man-the monument was designed to honor all the Arizona Rough Riders-the spirit of the hell-for-leather cavalryman is distinctly O'Neill's. The Riders lost their initial conference encounter to Mesa Community College but the determined cagers came back to win nine conference games in a row and take over first place slot in the conference. Mesa again beat the Riders by a slim 65-63 decision to end their winning streak. Two games later Arizona Western defeated the cold shooting Yavapai team to put Mesa, Arizona Western and Yavapai in a three way tie for the league lead. After the Rough Riders won two more games, Glendale Community College upset the Riders to put them out of the regular season race. The Region 1 Playoffs at Mesa Community College saw the Rough Riders once again face the Mesa l-loKams and once again go down in defeat 72-66. Arizona Western defeated Mesa to take its second consecutive league title. Yavapai squeezed by Snow College of Utah 79-77 for the third place slot in the playoffs. A two year nursing program was introduced to Prescott, September 1969 when Yavapai College opened and is the seventh Associate Degree Nursing program offered in the state of Arizona. Although the Associate Degree nurse is prepared primarily to function in a general hospital setting, other areas within the scope of nursing are avail- able to her through continuing education. Many of these classes are on campus while others are offered as extension courses in cities throughout the state. The Yavapai College Nursing Education program is under the direction of Mrs, Barbara Kitchens, RN. She is assisted by Mrs. Wanda Plumstead and Mrs. Ruth Westerinen. On August 31, 1970, the Nursing Department enrolled 20 women and one man. This brings the Associate Degree Nursing students to a total of 30, which includes nine students in their second year. 105- ,, I, . f gf I -106 U W .f'-'F,'4,,-1--- ,M 0020! C011 .., . The D-D team performed at every home game and accompanied the basketball team on one of the out-of-town games. Many hours of practice went into per- fecting the routines. At least one new routine was presented at each of the home games. The performances of the D-D team added much to the color and excitement of a very successful basket- ball season. pi, 1' ', ,, g . No. Because natural gas is with us, But it would take the power output of more than 900 Hoover Dams to equal the energy flowing through the nation's natural gas pipelines each day. Over 797,000 miles of gas pipelines now criss- cross the country. Which isn't surprising when you consider that more than 28,000,000 Amer- ican families are heating with gas. Not to mention those who use it for cooling, cooking, water heating and clothes drying. Of the 26,000 ways in which 168,000 industrial plants are using it. More than a million new customers each year are turning to gas because it does these modern jobs more efficiently. Nlore dependably. For less money. Sharlot Hall museum, for allowing us to copy their valuable old photographs, and the very helpful women there who cheerfully searched for the obscure facts l wanted. My humble gratitude to our photographer and harassesed advisor-the man who reminded us of ignored deadlines with the immortal words, Get to Work!, Mr. Mike. A special thanks also to our plundering ad-salesman, Flick Mayotte, and to the generous businessmen of Prescott, for supporting our venture. Finally, to the occasionallusual staff, a combination of optimism and frustration proved to be a winner. Of course, without the college itself it never would have been possible. Marnie Flaymer P.S. While the following was announced too late to be included in the body of the book, l felt it was really worthy of attention: the Board of Advisors of Outstanding College Athletes of America has informed George Walls and Dixie Richards that they are to be included in the 1971 edition of Outstanding College Athletes of America, an annual awards volume.
