In 1951, a small group of students walked through the doors of Yankton High School and were presented with the title of Freshmen. Scared and bewildered, they mingled in and out of the doors and classrooms wonder- ing what each one would bring in the way of excitement. As 1951 and 1952 passed by, they soon became active members of Yankton High School. The years 1953 and 1954 passed rapidly for this busy group of students. Soon this group donned caps and gowns to push through the gates of YHS as the graduating class of 1955. Their senior year was the most exciting as it was stacked high with honors and remembrances of fun-filled activities and concluded with the thrilling night of graduation. The class of 1955 left Yankton High School with a reputation to be proud, for: To The Valiant Heart Naught is In-xpossible. 2.5 - . 1 , ROBERT WEVERSTAD Foot ball 1-4g Basketball 1 4 Track 1-43 Intramural Z 3 Sr Play Prod.3 Favorite Pastimes Hunting, fishing skating qol lecting model houses IIMMIE JO WINFREE Senior Class Activities I . 3 Y, Yes, it's quite the class! It was a great season, beginning September l0 against South Sioux City in a 13-0 affair and ending at Norfolk with a score of 12- 0. No one scored over one touchdown against the Charnps and four opponents were held scoreless. The Bucks bowled over opponents with scores such as: Madison, 6-03 Huron, 32-65 Vermillion, 12-Og Mitchell, 25-6, Watertown, Z0-7. Cast as the underdog in their homecoming the giant grid machine, under the skilled eyes of good coaches, buckled down with grim determination and pro- ceeded to defend their E.S.D. crown against the nurnber one contender, Aberdeen. Again they came out on top. With a hornecoming game under their belts they rolled on over Vermillion, Brookings, Mitchell, Watertown, and Norfolk. 46 Mr. Overskei receives the E.S.D. The start of the 1954-55 Buck basketball season found Mr. Overskei with four re turning lettermen and it looked like we might go a long way in basketball. But the Bucks were plagued by injuries as Dick Beers and Bill Van Epps had to have opera tions, George Donohoe was out two weeks due to illness, and John Boyles still suffered from a broken arm received in football. Yankton won the first game of the sectional beating Scotland 67-40. But tragedy struck once more and Parkston beat Yankton in the final game 85-65. The Overskei cindermen opened the 1955 track season at the University of South Dakota invita- tional meet entering such events as the relays, hurdles, dashes, and shot put. The next week saw them at the Norfolk Track Meet where they did very well. The next few Saturdays were busy for the Bucks as they had an invitational meet at home: attended the Corn Palace Relays: picked up a few points in the Dakota Relays and won the Region VII crown. In the Conference Meet the Buck thinclads racked up Z5 points for 3rd place. During the season John Boyles broke the Y.H.S. 100 yard dash record and tied the Dakota Relays record in the same race. His record time was 10 flat. Also the mile-relay team came within a few tenths of a second of the Y.H.S. record but could not muster enough to break it. gf? W a T e U.S.D.
