The foundation of public school democracy started when 56 men representing lj colonies signed the United States Declaration of Independence. That democratic spirit continued to burn in the schools of the people, by the people, and for the people. Examples of Yankton High School's contributions to a greater democracy are the Woksape's freedom of the press, the Debate Squad's freedom of speech, the Student Council's right of assembly and the Sports teams' school defense. Thus, as this school and the nation meet on the cross-roads of America, we record that patriotic moment in this ARICKARA. nf' '-',' IW MJ. UPHOLDING AMERICAN RIGHTS Uncle Sam with his short beard and patriotic suit of red, white and blue symbolizes the democracy of the United States. In a like manner Prin. Ralph E. Nichol with his characteristic glasses and red hair represents a democracy within Yankton High School. Twelve years ago Mr. Nichol began duties as principal. Since then hundreds of students have crossed the threshold, bringing their problems, dreams, sorrows and joys to a principal, friend and adviser. Like Jefferson he believes in the common man, representative government, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Thus, as the nation honors its leader by firing the twenty-one gun salute, the students of Yankton High School honor the leader of the high school faculty by Hfteen cheers. In addition, the students applaud the superintendents and the teachers, who help youth carry on the American tradition of UPHOLDING AMERI- CAN RIGHTS. RALPH E. NICHOL 4. fi 7 bi if h 'xQJ6 f 5 X 391 41-rift.. Xl 'nag' A.. X Bath Ni 3 CHESTER A. BEAVER BARRE ' WE ' OUR SUPERINTENDENTS Two superintendents, Supt. Chester Beaver and acting Supt. Barrett Lowe, sitting behind the same desk are as different as the tawny hued mustache on one and the raven hair on the other-yet the same goal dominates each character. As patriots, one armed himself with a gun, the other with a pen. In explanation M r. Beaver was recently Captain of the Yankton division of the National Guard. And Mr, Lowe has written two books on the history of South Dakota. As commanders both helped to stabilize a more democratic school system. Their aims center around giving every Yankton boy and girl the right of self-government and freedom in cultivation of his talents. As citizens, in school or on the street, everyone has become familiar with both superintendents' simple, neighborly friendliness. Whether it's Mr. Beaver or Mr. Lowe sitting behind the desk, that they have pledged their skill and energy to the students can not be denied. Y. H. S. So now, the Annual Staff devotes a section to WE THE PEOPLE, to the seniors and the underclass- men. Clean-up drives, an iron-lung campaign, Arickara fes tivity plans and study hall government were accomplished by the Student Council which has representatives from each homeroom who meet every Tuesday morning with Prin. R. E. Nichol to discuss problems and plans. Bill Tschetter presided over the group the first semester and Kenneth Brimmer the final semester. SENIOR SUMMARY Approximately 120 seniors now enter the out- side world and become active citizens in this United States. Going back through their history-they entered high school and elected as their officers Harold Mayer, Robert Bicknell and Ferne Spear as fresh- men officers. They were under advisers Miss Verna Emanuel and Miss Rachel Fundingsland. History repeats itself, for as they became sophomores they again elected Harold Mayer their president and Wayne Livingston and Ralph Boone other oificers, with Miss Ada De Boos and Miss Harriett A. Jenney as advisers. At the beginning of the year they sponsored a Hobo party. They partici- pated in extra-curricular activities. Time marches ong they were juniors sponsoring the prom, the Junior Play, Spring Fever, holding important roles in speech, journalism, athletics and music. They elected as their officers Ernest Peschl, Bill Tschetter, Wilma Dennis and john Banks. Now in their crowning glory as seniors, they stand on the brink of their career. They have as their motto- For age and want, save while you may: no morning sun lasts the whole day. Besides sponsoring the Senior Play, What a Life, they were active in athletics, speech, journal- ism and clubs. ,ii iff3,ff1f:Qfl J-ff' ez' M iyifaglu r n.
