You will see yourself and your classmates participating in assemblies, radio pro- grams, athletic events, and then formal pictures of the seniors plus group pictures of the sophomores and juniors. Each club member is pictured in his respective group's picture. You see portraits of the faculty, art work done by the talented artists of our school and snaps taken by our school photographer. Always included also, in the Lolomi is the traditional shot of the school building itself-sometimes in fall costume, other times in winter or spring garb. All these things combine to make one happy year at Yakima Senior High School. We of the Lolomi staff sincerely hope that you enjoy reading this book as much as we have enjoyed preparing it. 4 W gg awww wigs' 95 K f M , was , ,... HISTORY OF THE CLASS 0F 1951 T'was in the beginning, when 120 meek, senior-fearing freshmen peeked from their seats in the uppermost crevices of the balcony, that the Class of 1951 began its career at YHS. Although lowest of the lower classmen, they held their heads high, and took their places at the polls to elect class officers. The first class leaders were Dick Nesary, president, Bill Eakin, vice-president, Pansy Henson, secretary, Nadine Mize, treasurer, Jo Ber- man, Girls' League representative, Larry Strickland, Boys' League representative, Dolores Headley, girls' ath- letic manager, Carl Coady, boys' athletic manager, Russell Petheram, sergeant-at-arms, and Jackie Hogsett, ASB representative. Joined by the entering sophomores from the junior high schools the next fall, they organized and elected Bill Eakin president. Other officers were Bruce Brackett, vice-president, Lois Brackett, secretary, Patsy Brown, treasurer, Maureen McMechan, Girls' League representative, Wayne King, Boys' League representative, Sara Mae Peterson, girls' athletic manager, Bob Ward, boys' athletic manager, Don Jones, sergeant-at-arms and Dick Nesary, ASB representative. Into the junior year and at last upperclassmen, they chose Bruce Brackett for their president. Lois Brack- ett was vice-president, Patsy Brown, secretary, Peggy Benner, treasurer, Betty Jo Scott, Girls' League repre- sentative, Fred Halverson, Boys' League representative, Sue Baker, girls' athletic manager, Earl Miller, boys' athletic manager and Gerald Hodge, sergeant-at-arms. The immediate project was the classplay Chicken Every Sunday which provided money for the class treasury, and fun and enjoyment for all. The Class of '51 cast members were Sally Anderson, Benny Bounds, Eleanor Bronson, Vadine Burroghs, Marjorie Clark, J ack Dobie, Peggy Hopkins, Jerry Kelly, Kaye Schooley, and Byron Stevenson. Miss Eva Bucknam had charge of ticket sales and was aided by Sue Baker, Marvin Becker, Patsy Brown, Fred Halverson, and Betty Jo Scott. Stairway to the Stars was the dreamy theme of the Junior-Senior reception, and was carried out by silvered stars on the walls and a centerpiece of a large mirrored star. General committee chairman of the big event were Francine King, decorations, Sylvia Jeffers, programs, June Boltz, invitations, Sara Mae Peterson, entertainment, Marcia Huston, chaperones and Peggy Benner, clean-up. The junior class was honored at commencement exercises when Wilbur Helm won the DAR American history contest and Bruce Brackett was chosen HMost Worthy Junior. Leading the graduating class to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance were Bruce Brackett and Hayden Ellingham. AND THEN--THEY WERE SENIORS! Let their deeds of this year be not forgotten. Gaining honor of election to the ASB council were Hayden Ellingham, president, Sara Mae Peterson, vice-president, Peggy Benner, secretary, Lois Brackett, treasurer, Bill Eakin, inter-school commissioner, Frank McBarron, publicity manager, Marallyn Frame, Girls' League president and Del Stoutenberg, Boys' League president. Reenie McMechan and Joyce Ross served as cheerleaders for two years, injecting school spirit and pep into our lives. ' Bruce Brackett proved the worth of his leadership when he was re-elected to the class presidency. Vice- president was Earl Miller, Secretary, Betty Jo Leising, treasurer, Chuck Rabung, Girls' League representative, Francine King, Boys' League representative, Tom Guderian, girls' athletic manager, Jane Lombard, and Warren Nott, sergeant-at-arms. Lovely Pat Anderson reigned as football queen with Jane Lombard and Mary Jane Taylor, princesses. Chosen king was Dean Haubrich and princes were Wayne King and Earl Miller. More honors were bestowed when active Maureen McMechan was chosen representative for the DAR Pilgrimage. Came spring and blossom time with the election of vivacious Joyce Ross as Yakima's Apple Blossom princess for the festival at Wenatchee. Journalistically, a vote of thanks for the Wigwams, edited by Suzanne Buller and June Boltz, and the memory-laden Lolomi, headed by Marvin Becker and Elizabeth Gibson. Scholastically, the class knocked over all preceding re c o r d s by producing six valedictorians with straight A records. They were Barbara Bode, Marjorie Clark, Don Everett, Wilbur Helm, Evelyn Revelli, and Pat Ripley. Salutatorian was Marcia Huston. The Class of 1951 would like to express appreciation to Miss Rachel Shuman for the excellent guidance provided from her station as class adviser. The date of June 6, 1951 has various meanings tomembers of the class, for it is on that date that 375 sen- iors end their high school careers. After the long march many choices confront members of the class. Whatever the decision, the years of high school, its work and activities will not soon be lost from the minds of the gradu- ates of the Class of 1951. The ability of coach John Zaepfel and the experience of senior mem- bers provides enough material for possibilities of capturing their 5th straight Mythical Vliashington State Championship. These games will be played later in the season. John Zaepfel has proven his ability in the past years as one ol' the finest coaches of high school age material in the game. This can be proved by the fine record he has developed in the last seven or eight years in American Junior Legion and Yakima High School baseball. Through the years his success has been attributed to the talent for developing fine young pitchers. The l95l team is no ex- ception. This squad is built around three senior pitchers. The Pirates took a heartbreaking loss by 7-0. A Trapper guard picked up a fumble in the third quarter and rambled 83 yards to a touchdown. Sunnyside was the next guest of the Pirates. Bob Hurst led the Pirates to a 46-6 victory by carrying the ball 11 times for a phenomenal 280 yards. The next victim of the Pirates powerful dreadnaught was Olympia High school. The Buccaneers whipped the Bears by a score of 25-7. The Pirates were led by the accurate passing of quarterback Al Perry. In winning, the Pirates showed their best form of the season. For their last home game of the 1950 season, the Pirates took on the Wenatchee Panthers. Bob Hurst and Earl Miller led the Pirates to a 64-0 victory by carrying the ball for 12.3 yards and 11.5 yards per carry, respectively. There was a lot of talk of the Pirates' going to the Thanksgiving day game in Seattle when the Bucs traveled to Bremerton. The game was touch-and-go all the way and when the game was over the Bucs were on the short end of a 19-6 score. The single touchdown by the Pirates came when quarterback Al Perry attempted a pass to end Dean Haubrich. When Perry found that his receiver was covered he headed out for the goal line and crossed it after a thrilling 50-yard run. For the last game of the season, the Bucs traveled to Richland to take on the Bombers. The Pirates were going strong when Al Perry threw a pass to Bob Hurst, good for 63 yards and a touchdown. When the game ended the Bucs were down by a 20-18 score. All in all the 1950 football season was a success as the Pirates showed a record of five wins and three losses which was much better than the '49 season. Our hats go off to the stirring line play of seniors Gerry Hodge, Dean Haubrich, Wayne King, Don Jones, Jack Shaw and juniors Doug Riggle and .lack lnions. Don Bennett BASKETBALL Continued from page 89 The Bucs then scooted through the sub-district basketball tournament with flying colors by trouncing Marquette 49-35 and Wapato 54--36. The next Saturday the battling Buccaneers took on Richland in the valley tournament finals and succeeded in downing the determined Bombers 33-32 on the strength of a last minute foul shot. On Tuesday, March 13, Coach Jack Jennings and his charges left Yakima, bound for Seattle and the State basketball tour- nament. The following morning the Bucs routed Clarkston 47-20. In the second round Yakima faced Anacortes and was victor- ious 48-38. Friday night the locals advanced to the finals by squeezing past Seattle Prep 40-36. Saturday evening the squad faced Highline for the championship. Although our boys lost their first place state championship bid, they took second place. This was the highest placing for the Bucs since they won the state title in 1935. We also placed Al Perry on the all-state team and Chuck Rabung on the second team. Dick Bohannon 108 f'N c 4? !
