Congratulations to all students for a good year which has been crammed full of worthy accom- plishments. lt is my sincere hope that your experiences in the Yakima schools will have helped to prepare you to serve your Nation more effectively. Remember that education does not end with graduation. It is a process that continues during your whole life. Your constant endeavor to improve yourself after leaving school will be one of the important elements in your success. ln these troubled times when even our freedom is being challenged and when the destiny of mankind hangs in a balance. the world needs as never before the leadership of clear thinking young men and women. Now is a good time to revaluate your goals, renew your faith in democracy and to pledge your help toward shaping a better world. a world with a bright future of peace and abun- dance. Best wishes to the graduating class, a splendid group of students upon whom the solution of many of our problems will depend and who I feel certain will do their utmost to preserve the tradi- tions that have made the United States of America a great Nation. M. L. MARTIN, Superintendent 7 It is with particular satisfaction that l wish the graduating class the lnest of everything for the years ahead. The Atomic lfra has need ol' you. Scientists have given us a new' found strength. Shall this force he harnessed for the welfare of man, or will it he let loose on the world? No greater responsibility could lme given any group. Make use of your ability to reason and create. Civilization must be taught the meaning of world cooperation. Your judgment and action will determine the de- gree and success ol' making workable any plan for nations to live together peacahly. li. JUST THE SPOKES Squeeze me. Hic! Over the thresh- hold. Babe in the woods. Oops! An apple a day . Woof ! Buried treasure? Lover Murph. Lucas. Wanna' ride? Get her! l Sleepy time gals. The story of Iwo cigarettes. Ship ahoy! Al the end of a rainbow. Childhooml swovl- hearts. Ain'l we the om-5 though? SENIOR HISTORY September 18, 194-5-that,day was perhaps the most exciting day in our young lives-We were starting high school. Nothing could dim our jubilant hearts as we happily and excitedly entered the portals of '6Yakima High Schoolf' But our spirits were somewhat dampened, not by rain, but because we, the four hundred fifty-six sophomores, began to visualize our future trials and tribulations. We wandered helplessly through the aimless maze of halls which constitute Yakima High. From the very beginning we had three strikes against us as one member of our multitude leaned too hard on a showcase window in f'Ye Olde Booke Store. Our ego was further deflated when we found ourselves SARA HAI,-S05 occupying the cheaper seats high in the heavens on the 'fshelffi Historian But you can't keep good men down, so we lifted our weary heads, picked up our purses, badly damaged by ASB tickets, Lolomi tickets, escalator and elevator tickets, not to mention water tickets, rent on cafeteria stools, towel fees, dues, books, and anything else which happened to catch our fan- cies, and held our first election. The results were: Alma Kosch, president, Frank Hayes, vice-presi- dent, Jim Mann, secretary, Dick Winkenwerder, treasurer, Bill Doyle, sergeant at arms, Lizabeth Eschbach, Girls League representative, and Carol Hollinsworth, ASB representative. The first social event of the year was a Halloween party held in the gymnasium. Then came our IOH semester. Our situation was little improved, although by this time we could find our way around without the aid of compasses, maps, and bloodhounds. New officers in- cluded: Bob Middlekauff, president, Gloria Shelton, secretary, Philip Johnson, treasurer, Eddie Scheinost, sergeant at arms, Beverly Wendt, Girls League representative, and Vic Lamb, Boys League representative. We held another class party in this semester. Dancing in the gym and swimming at Lion's pool afforded entertainment. But the best part of all came when we invaded the cafeteria and consumed acres, gallons, and quarts of hot dogs, ice cream, and cokes. Then suddenly, we found ourselves no longer sophies, but at last high and mighty juniors. The year before we vowed to even the razzing suffered at the hands of the seniors, so we in turn turned it on the more unfortunate children. Barbara Waddell was elected president, Darrell Calahan, vice-president, Shirley Bolstad, sec- retary, Dave Scott, tfeasurer, Dick Crow, sergeant at arms, Carolyn Johnson, Girls League represen- tative, Jim Wikstrom, ASB, and Pat Griswold, girls' athletic manager. Games, square dancing and other forms of-er-ah-entertainment fsome of the boys were broke for weeksj were featured at our party held on October 18. Quick as a flash we were only one jump away from seniority-yes, IIH. Don McGuinness as president, successfully led us through the class play, HFirst Lady, .and best of all, the junior-senior reception. However, he was ably assisted by Bob Merritt as vice-president, Delores Olson, secretary, Beverly Howden, treasurer, Dick Hurd, sergeant at arms, Jo Bothstrom, Girls League, and Gayle Midgley, Boys League. Then-we were seniors! We walked down the halls to hear the freshmen whisper in awed voices, 4'Gee, they're seniorsf, We took fiendish delight in misdirecting those who were dumb enough to ask our assistance. Electing officers this year was a very important task, for on their shoulders would rest the du- ties of a whole year. Choosing Dick Winkenwerder as president we started down the home stretch. Other officers were Marge Savage, vice-president, Lois Nelson, secretary, Tom Pence, treasurer, George Pennell, sergeant at arms, Lewis Cooper, ASB, Carol Hollinsworth, Girls League representa- tive, Dick Crow, Boys League representative, Jo Oliver, girls' athletic manager, and Bill Schlagel as boys' athletic manager. Our heads were filled with thoughts of college, scholarships, proofs and pictures, skip day, banquet, memorial, announcements, baccalaureate, commencement, college, scholarships, pictures, skip day, banquet-whoopsl Yes, we were looking forward to all the usual activities preceding graduation. Now most of them are behind us. And in a very few days comes the biggest event of all. On the night of June 4-, nineteen hundred and forty-eight, the class of the same year will drop the curtain on the first act of the play of life. We'll go our varied ways wherever they may be. Many of us will never meet again. On behalf of the class I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Anna E. Strase, our adviser, and her assistant advisers Miss Ruth Wilkins, and Mr. O. P. Ramsey for their excellent guiding of the class of nineteen hundred and forty-eight through three successful years. 73 SENIORS David Acton: 11H president, photo club, FFA, assembly committee, First Lady, The Night of January Sixteenth.
