I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do or how I was supposed to act. Then a senior approached me and told me I was her little sister. For a week after that, I was forced to wear all sorts of weird attire and do embarrassing things. Although this made me feel very silly, I had a secure and welcome feeling. Now that I am a part of Xavier I realize that initiation wasn't that bad. As a matter of fact it was a lot of fun. Out of it all, I have gained some life-long friends. af bf f elf' Left: Sue Eacret models her bow. Above: Anne Cusack helps Mary Sheahan figure out her first combination lock. Freshmen get it together at the Frosh Mzxer Come to the frosh mixer! This is your chance to meet some of those darling Brophy boys! Xavier's senior class officers, along with Brophy's Student Council, publicized this long known statement. So the freshmen went to the mixer with dreams of leaving with a boyfriend, little did they know. The music was good, thanks to Tim Sterling and Company, the food was delightful tif you like hot dogsl. The swimming pool was refreshing lto the three boys who indulged-needless to say no girlsl. The typical scene: - boys next to the food stand-girls next to the dance floor, waiting to be asked. But all in all it was really fun. It broke the ice so to speak and there were a few budding romances as a result. Another result-100 left over hot dogs! Bishop dedicates Luffy Hall Bishop Edward McCarthy came to Xavier to bless and dedicate our new building, and give out honors and awards. Cecelia Zeleski presented a flag donated by her parents in memory of their son, Philip, who was killed in Vietnam. Scholastic awards were presented after a talk on youth involvement by the Bishop. Many sophomores, juniors, and seniors received honors for perfect attendance, language proficiency and science accomplishments. A ceremony was held that evening. Jessie Garcia, Ann Causey, and Martha Rodriguez were hostesses. 15 i www kk R R. 5 g . 19 f 5 -il ' llf if 374, 3593 . xi . . .. The Senior Retreat was a time of great relaxation. We could just sit back, watch a movie, wear our cowgirl hats, snooze under a pine tree, or get into a heavy discussion on the psychology course that Father Barry presented. There was a serious side to the retreat also. We realized that this was probably the last time we would all be together, so we really made the most of it. We especially listened to each others ideas and theories about friends, life, love, and God. We gained the knowledge that people, not things were important. The best thing the Senior Retreat accomplished, was the realization that all of us were individuals, yet we needed each other to grow. 25 A E z if A M, i x Q M, 1 Win , T2-ig? , x, , Vkrr .?,t,.,s .Y ii X I -af 'T I. 1, if ww K k,, 5w., .ff ,.q..,,. w,,,. .., M, .M ,,, ,A5., ,,..,,,,fk- m i any I'm okay, you're okay, was the theme of the first renewal day. Student boards revise to meet students' needs Rosie Appelbe. What is student government? This question was thoroughly investigated by the members of the two student boards. As a result of this investigation, with the help of Mr. Ron Shone, moderator, a serious problem revealed itself. The boards, although combined this year to form a complete unit, were not sufficient for any form of government to operate effectively. Only the nine members were learning the potential of government. The student body re- mained totally unaware. The flaw was pinpointed as the lack of student responsibility towards government. The boards proposed a new three branch system, modeled after the U.S. government, which was unanimously voted in by the student body. It is hoped that this will help fill the needs of the students. Sophomores increase sense of togetherness The sophomore class officers are lstanding left to rightl Trisha Sterling, chairman, and Amy Slasor, treasurer. The two presidents of the class secretary: Mary Ann Gouveia, vice presidentg What does the future have in store for us? We only know about our own experiences-our sophomore bake sales and our fund drives selling stationary. We know about freshmen little sisters, dances, exciting games and afternoon lunches. And we vividly remember the words, Apple core, Baltimore. Who's my best friend ..... ? This year we have reached out to each other. Maybe we learned more about one another, through our ex- change of ideas. This year the class worked together some of the time-maybe, just maybe, we can keep this spirit going. Maybe we can increase our togetherness and use our knowledge and mature. 112 Angela Haynes, social are lseatedl Mary Murphy and Michelle Gaida. Those were the da ys, my friend Maybe as seniors we have been spared the act of doing, being, and becoming. Have we missed out on life, or have we contributed to the betterment of ourselves? Entering our senior year we were confronted with new and changing experiences. College tests that dragged on for hours, college, counselors with no answers, college again, and finally-graduation. Freshman life was simple and easy. All we really had to worry about were dates and rides to and from the athletic events and dances. And there was the Brophy-Xavier picnic at Encanto with pie fights, water fights, and boys. As sophomores, we were entitled to go to the weekly Brophy-Xavier get-togethers. That's when we didn't have to worry about having parties, just going. That was the year when the soph's were really together. Remember how we filled so many rows for the Talent Show'?? Remember Elvis and the Osmonds on stage and in person????? Junior year. What can we say? So many things that we worked for-grades, recognition, Senior Banquet, rings, candy lthat we still have nightmares aboutl . . . things we worked hard for. The night of the banquet, remember friends, fainting Mary, hippie Val, and Sister Scholastica prowling the convent floors. Those days may be over, but there is still more to look forward to. Can you see us at graduation, walking down the aisle, dressed in white among friends and family? It seems scary to leave behind our friends here at Xavier, but we need room to grow, to become, to live. We needed each other and we will need each other in the years to come. If you go through life not remembering Xavier-remember your friends, the happy times and how they shaped our lives.
