ASTONISHED ARTISAN - Pat Johnson presents her influential critique on water colors to Sharon Loubet. Art: Emphasis On Creativit fn . .Q - MISS I-IILDEGARDE STEFFES - Art I, II, III, IV, Xavier Art AS- sociation, Folk Club Moderator. Xavier High has many departments to be proud of but one of the most outstanding is the Art Department. The talented head is Miss Steffes, an understanding but demand- ing teacher. Many a youth with unknown talent has flourished under her supervision. Her trade secret is a belief in promoting creative thinking, to help develop the indi- vidual, not to make artists. Emphasis is stressed on -experimentation, teaching the student to create and solve problems. In Art I a student experiments with different forms from clay and paper mache to water color and tempra. Thus the teacher can evaluate the ability of her class and plan her work accordingly. But seldom is one field pursued exclusively, even in Art IV classes. Art History is included in the study of art. Through this one gains cultural appre- ciation and a deeper knowledge of art through the ages, plus the inspiration for future styles in art work. What art really means to each one of us cannot be expressed in these few words. Perhaps this short poem will in some way suflicez I was blind and she made me see. Now I capture what from my eye did flee. ARTISTIC GENIUS -Miss Stejfes shows how to do it from the Hmasters' angle. 26 ACADEMICS
