Mathematics : Basis For Computer A e FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE - Geometry students Bev Burger, Kathie Goulet, Mary Weems, Terri Day and April Anair discover characteristics of solid figures. N INTRIGUING INTERSECTIONS - funiors Ann Williams and Ellen 0'Dowd learn principles of Cartesian coordinate system. Logarithms, obtuse angles, and conic sec- tions are all a part of the mathematician's working Vocabulary. Algebra and geometry students explore the concepts of modern math while members of the Math IV class follow the more conventional methods. Preparing for the computer age, math teach- ers stress the importance of logic problem structure and orderly thought process. Sopho- more students delved into the beauty of mathe- matics as they created the illusions of curved fig- ures through the use of only a straight edge. REACTION WITHOUT HEAT - Senior chemistry students Cathy Staab and Patrice Delagrange prepare sodium chloride in a lab experiment. Knowledge Throu h Experimentation Amid test tubes, microscopes, bur- ners, and shots of Look, girls, her sweater caught fire, Xavier's future scientists labor long in the labs. Be it dissecting frogs, proving principles, or collecting gas in bottles, scientific curiosity reigns supreme. Weekly lectures supplement text- book knowledge, and a student's progress is checked by chapter tests. By undertaking outside projects, sci- ence students learn the principles of independent investigation and the value of science in daily life. These greetings are not heard on a quick trip of the continent, but at the beginning of each lan- guage class when students greet their Latin, Spanish, and French teachers. To encourage an appreciation of other cultures, the instruc- tions include more than grammar and translation. Many a day finds the Spanish department presenting an original skit, Latin scholars relating mythology to their stories, or French students learning about life in that country from film strips.
