A challenge . . . an acceptance . . . a fulfillment. The sensa- tional sixties brought a new principal to Xavier High School in the person of Sister Mary Katrine, B.V.M. Dedicated to the idea that each student is an unique individual, she accepted the challenge of providing an education attuned to personal growth and development. The first changes were minor, but they were indicative of future plans. Uniform bow ties disappeared and 'iblue bean- ies were forgotten. Sister combined her green-thumb and quiet determination to a campus beautification program. Seemingly overnight it happened . . . roses bloomed, evergreen trees were revitalized, and the grass became conducive to picnicking. Later, gather- ings were encouraged by the construction of benches along the south wall. Under the sponsorship of the Mother's Club, a blacktop parking lot replaced a field of dirt and mud. A new entrance was lined with palm trees and a grilled gate pro- claimed the name of Xavier. Everywhere, Sister encouraged growth. Her up-grading of spiritual activities paralleled the spirit of renewal in the Church. Xavier joined Brophy for First Friday Masses, and a marriage course by the Jesuit fathers for Senior students was initiated. These outward changes were a reflection of the increased opportunities for individual development. Frequent assem- blies, song-fests and talent shows were encouraged. Student leaders were given added responsibility and voice in school activities instead of more regulations. Always aware of the changing world, she gave Xavier stu- dents a Knew lookw as multi-plaid skirts and bright yellow sweaters replaced blue and white uniforms, and the cthud, thud, of saddle Oxfords gave way to the gclock, clock' of black loafers. Realizing that individual guidance is vital to a studentis growth, Sister added a full-time counselor so girls could seek advice by merely dropping in for a 'gchatn in the relaxed at- mosphere of a new office. A beautiful new faculty lounge was the envy of all. People exist, they conform, or they stand as individuals. But those reaching even greater heights are people dedicated to the Formation of Individuals. Sister is the strength behind Xavier - moulding and motivating girls to meet responsibili- ties of womanhood. ln the spirit of our representation of PEO- PLE, we dedicate the 1966 Xavierian to Sister Mary Katrine, B.V.M.
