L; Qz Z The 1961 XAVIERIAN is to be a tribute to the Spanish discoverers of our land. It is our aim to give to all who turn these pages a deeper realization of what those noble men gave to us. The proud Spanish Conquistadores have bequeathed to the Southwest a magnificent heritage. The treasures of a lyric language, the stately architecture, and the colorful customs which they left us are infinitely more precious than the golden cities they sought for themselves. The rule of Spain has passed but her memory remains. Rivers, mountains, cities, and towns bear names in her tongue. Our English has been enriched by Spanish contact. The bells of Spanish missions ,,,W,k 1 still ring out the gentle call of Christ. t .v Poetry has felt the thrill of Spanish mystery and romance. Art has her Vivid beauty. Music sparkles L with Spanish spice and flavor. Literature tells of the great deeds and conquests of the Sons of Spain. Men like Padre Kino and Coronado trod our soil and gave their lives to bring Christianity and civilization to a savage wilderness. They fought and struggled, strove and sacrificed to tame the West and to secure prosperity for us, its children. We owe a long overdue ugracias to Spain for her bounteous gifts. Let us now attempt to pay a small portion of our debt of gratitude. rv...4-,.-me v. n-... H. .-a A... ,., Z-mm . prhw hnho-r' ' W-mw...... .u- u-m-mu-mymm...u. .. nus. l.
