PLoenix, xdrizona L; Qz Z The 1961 XAVIERIAN is to be a tribute to the Spanish discoverers of our land. It is our aim to give to all who turn these pages a deeper realization of what those noble men gave to us. The proud Spanish Conquistadores have bequeathed to the Southwest a magnificent heritage. The treasures of a lyric language, the stately architecture, and the colorful customs which they left us are infinitely more precious than the golden cities they sought for themselves. The rule of Spain has passed but her memory remains. Rivers, mountains, cities, and towns bear names in her tongue. Our English has been enriched by Spanish contact. The bells of Spanish missions ,,,W,k 1 still ring out the gentle call of Christ. t .v Poetry has felt the thrill of Spanish mystery and romance. Art has her Vivid beauty. Music sparkles L with Spanish spice and flavor. Literature tells of the great deeds and conquests of the Sons of Spain. Men like Padre Kino and Coronado trod our soil and gave their lives to bring Christianity and civilization to a savage wilderness. They fought and struggled, strove and sacrificed to tame the West and to secure prosperity for us, its children. We owe a long overdue ugracias to Spain for her bounteous gifts. Let us now attempt to pay a small portion of our debt of gratitude. rv...4-,.-me v. n-... H. .-a A... ,., Z-mm . prhw hnho-r' ' W-mw...... .u- u-m-mu-mymm...u. .. nus. l. a a e jcaclemicad . . You bore the heat of the day and labored long In the vineyards of the Lord. Well done thou devoted shepherd of our Hock. For a generation: You envisioned, planned, and built. You offered guidance, solace and counsel. You guarded our fold against the onslaughts of the enemy. Now it is yours to rest and ours to carry on your work. The memory of: Your zeal Will spur us on. Your dedication Will bear us up. Your example will light our way. Well done thou good and faithful servant. eAnn Baker J4ca elem icazs The purpose of a Christian education is to impart Truth. We are placed on earth to know God, the Ultimate Truth. Truth is not llabsorbed by the process of osmosis, but by a particularly arduous procedure commonly called learning. Xavier High School seeks to encourage the highest possible scholastic standards, not only in classes of religion, but also in literature, chemistry, and social science. Although sports and other extra-curricular ac- tivities are necessary for a well-balanced personal- ity, the tendency today is to exaggerate their im- portance. Mere physical f1tness or outward charm is not enough in this highly competitive world. In our scientific age, there is increasing need for young people With keen intellects and inquiring minds. We are living in a materialistic world. We can help change that world. One of our best weapons is Reason itself. Men of today often do not realize that science and reason are always on God,s side, since He is the author of both. Xavier will continue the volleyball games, the dances, the clubs, and all other outside activity that is conducive to a healthy, normal life. These are vital components Which help to make the complete young adult. But Xavier Will always safeguard our more pre- cious gifts--those of the mind, and the soul. And so by encouraging both by giving greater impetus to the more important, we hope to prepare students who are adequately equipped to face challenges of the future, as citizens of the world of tomorrow, and citizens of the World Without End. t .V A.vl V I . Only four short years ago we entered your doors for the first time. Before we leave wetd like to thank you for the lessons youlve taught and the memories youtve given us. They are the things well cherish foreve, . Remember all the fun we had as freshmen? The welcome party from the seniors, our Big-Sister Tea, GAA initiation, the Sock Hop, our first semi-formal, and, of course, our trip ttAround the World at the breakfast for the seniors. They were wonderful times, and by the end of the year we had really grown up. Sophomore year Came with all the growing pains possible. The ttBroomstick Bouncelt was our first big enterprise on our own,. and we were all so proud when it was a success! That was the year our class spirit and school loyalty really began to develop. What a thrill it was to beat the seniors in the Annual Drive and clean-up campaign, but how we hated to say good-bye as they were presented in their uOpening Night at graduation. Junior year, and we were finally upperclassmen. We acted like it too-until the Guild initiation, when the seniors showed us they were still boss! Our mixers, ticket drives, and the valentine lunch all helped us to become more united that year, and this unity hel ed to make our class tops. Graduation came and it was our turn to be usobbing ostesses at the banquet, HSea Fantasea . And then, before we knew it, the night of nights was upon us-our first prom, and welll remember it HTill the End of Time . 1960-61, the year of changes. Our senior year. We had dreamed about it, and yet, when it came we met it with regret, for we would be doing everything that year for the last time . Our last Candlelighting, our last retreat, our last May Crowning. We had fun too, of course-the ring ceremony, the Christmas dance, the senior assembly. These things place a poor second to the eventsrwhich we realize we will really miss. You have taught us, Xavier, to appreciate the finer things of life. With' the help of God and His Blessed Mother you have given us memories we could gain nowhere else. It is no longer a mass of pictures, reams of copy paper, and hours of typing. As editor, I have great admiration for those who helped assemble the finished book e your book e I owe my deepest gratitude to - Sister Mary Katrine, B.V.M., and the faculty who fully supported and cooperated with the XAVIERIAN staff. Mr. Joe McCormick who guided us and helped us to gain experience and develop initiative. Mr. James Duke, our commercial photographer, who fulfilled our requests in record time and proved that a photographer can be a true artist. Mr. William Noble, who was always ready for candid camera shots on a momenfs notice. Miss Hildegarde Steffes, Sister Mary Edwardetta, B.V.M., the Stoffas, and all those who contributed their talents and time. Mary Voita and Ann Baker, who were tireless workers throughout the entire year and who buoyed up the whole staff with their en- thusiasm. The staff members who proved that Xavier girls are the greatest! a My final and lasting thanks go to you, the students of Xavier. You were always willing to cooperate. You showed this when you made the advertisement drive to finance this book an overwhelming success. Editor 'W-Mw .-e...-...m -n. a J4nunciod A school is a single unit of the com- munity. It is not self-sufiicient nor does it want to be. Every member of the com- munity contributes in one way or other toward the preparation of tomorrows world through the education of today,s youth. There is a partnership between the school and business that is vital but often overlooked. Business contributes to edu- cation through scholarships, leadership and scholastic awards, and the support of school publications through advertising. The annual is a service to the student body but more important, a step in the ladder of educa- tion. Our advertisers make this step possible and now we thank them for their coopera- tion and generosity . w MW! 0m, W Wm. Mwierian patrond Reverend John Doran Reverend Daniel J. Kelleher, SJ.
