glffft WQPLPHQCLFLCQ DURING THE EVENTFUL YEAR lust drawing to a close, a First Perform- ance has been played at Xavier-the first scholastic year upon the long-awaited stage of the new high school. ln the artificial world of the theater, there is a glamour attached to Opening Night which never comes again. After the curtain goes down on the last act, some of the illusion is gone, and hopes and fears become a reality as success or failure become part of living per- sonalities. At Xavier there can be no such illusion, because this has not been a make-believe performance, but a production real and tangible and very, very important. It is true that the same scenes have been por- trayed before, but on a borrowed stage. The cast has differed with each succeeding year-the lovely Leading Lady has femained the same, As the graduating class of nineteen fifty-seven take their places for the grand finale, as they walk on stage for their last bow, and slowly yet certainly come to the end of that memorable First Perform- ance, a gratitude wells up in their hearts, shouting to be heard- gratitude to their patient directors, their helpful supporting cast and understudies, their appreciative audience. And to keep that gratitude undimmed, to hold the memory of their years at Xavier unchanged forever, they place them lovingly upon the pages of the 1957 XAVIERIAN. 2 1
