After the curtain goes down on the last act, some of the illusion is gone, and hopes and fears become a reality as success or failure become part of living per- sonalities. At Xavier there can be no such illusion, because this has not been a make-believe performance, but a production real and tangible and very, very important. It is true that the same scenes have been por- trayed before, but on a borrowed stage. The cast has differed with each succeeding year-the lovely Leading Lady has femained the same, As the graduating class of nineteen fifty-seven take their places for the grand finale, as they walk on stage for their last bow, and slowly yet certainly come to the end of that memorable First Perform- ance, a gratitude wells up in their hearts, shouting to be heard- gratitude to their patient directors, their helpful supporting cast and understudies, their appreciative audience. And to keep that gratitude undimmed, to hold the memory of their years at Xavier unchanged forever, they place them lovingly upon the pages of the 1957 XAVIERIAN. 2 1 I tel- I. . . KCLCLGJPOIO X A THE OLD AND THE NEW in perfect har- mony. ln lines of simple dignity and beauty, the new Xavier has been built to match and complement the architec- tural design ofthe old Brophy. The lovely tower of St. Francis Xavier keeps eternal watch above a peaceful, sunlit landscape. TO THE STUDENTS OF XAVIER HIGH SCHOOL PHOENIX, ARIZONA Once again some of you are preparing to leave your beloved Alma Mater, having finished a relatively good part of your education. You have enjoyed a singular blessing in the privilege that has been yours of a sound Catholic training. This means that you have been taught the final purpose of life in this world. Man has been created by God lust a little less than the angels, he should not be the slave of lower creation, npr is his destiny to serve the purposes of other men or even of angels, no obiect less than God Infinite and Eternal is worthy of an immortal soul rational and free. This is what true education means-that man belongs to God. Nothing less can satisfy the desires of the human heart because God has fashioned it that way. With congratulations and a blessing, I am Devotedly yours in Christ, I BISHOP OF TUCSON 8 MY DEAR GIRLS: Sincere congratulations to you as the first graduating class of the New Xavier High School. But greater distinction than being the first class to graduate is that you are a graduate of Xavier High School. By that fact alone you should be different. You have been trained after your wondrous Model, the Blessed Virgin Mary. The education at Xavier High School has set you apart by lifting you up upon a pedestal where man may look up to you for inspiration and help. The modern world will tempt you to come down to its level of thinking and of acting. If you do, it cannot fail to look upon you as an ordinary woman. But remain where your loving Model remained, for all eyes to be raised aloft to see you in all your goodness. Then you are fullfilling your grand vocation of womanhood-by your holy living you make the world better and so much happier. God love and keep you! DANIEL J. KELLEHER, S. J. 9 DEAR GRADUATE: Tonight the last act is over, the curtain has been rung down, and you come to the end of a First Performance well done. Before the applause dies away, let me add my own congratulations to those of your friends and loved ones. Let me wish you well in the name of every teacher who has helped you toward this night. As you graduate, our joy is full in the knowledge that you are well-equipped for what lies ahead. The strong foundation of a Catholic education is yours, the bulwark of Christian ideals is firm about you. In your hearts have been sown the seeds of a fruitful love of Truth and Beauty, and before your eyes has been placed the bright image of your Leading Lady. Our task is done, and now it remains for you to carry the lessons learned out onto the greater stage of tomorrow's world. God bless you as you go, and Mary be your Star, your Inspiration. XAVIER HIGH SCHOOL is conducted by the Sisters of Charity ofthe Blessed Virgin Mary, whose lives are dedicated to the two-fold end of personal sanctification and the salvation of souls. This second end is to be attained by the Christian education imparted by our Sisters in their schools, and to this end is directed every energy and activity. Under the direction of the Jesuit Fathers of St. Francis Xavier Parish, and with the assistance of a number of devoted lay faculty members, Xavier has taken its place as an institution ot learning devoted to the Glory of God and the service of youth. . . fha gCl,CllAy ls..
