4:::2 ' My dear Graduates: We happily congratulate you as the tenth graduating class and as the first of the new Xavier High School. You were given the sacred trust of bringing to the new school all the loving traditions of the old. And the most cherished is Xavier's filial devotion to Mary. She has stood as the gracious symbol of everything that is noble in human nature. Woman above all women glorified, Our tainted nature's solitary boast, Purer than foam on central ocean tossed. She has ever been Xavier High's glorious boast and you have carried her triurnphantly into the bright halls of the new school to reign supreme in the hearts of all girls of Xavier. We are sure that you will carry her and her virtues further - out from these walls into the world that sorely needs more women much like your glorious Mother Mary. God love you and keep you in His care. II

i To the Graduates of Xavier High School: Besides doctrine, reason and common sense play an important role in deter- mining the claims made by the Catholic Church. From the day Christ established the Church and gave her the divine commission to feed His lambs and sheep, it has been her claim in theory and in practice that true education must include a reli- gious and moral training. This is, of course, but common sense. Of what avail is a physical or intellectual giant if his career is not guided by moral principles? This explains then why your teachers and parents have been willing to make so many sacrifices that you might enjoy the benefits which have come to you during the years of your schooling. Now, that you are graduating, be mindful of the privilege that you have had by employing your education to good advantage always with a view to your last end. Ultimately this it is that counts. Nothing else has lasting value. On this happy occasion, l send a blessing with greetings to all the teachers and students of Xavier High School. l Bishop of Tucson 10
