The phoenix above the rising sun indicates the locale. Knots of the cord encircling the shield symbolize four years of scholass tic achievement dedicated to Christian principles as expressed in the diocesan motto, Omnia pro Jesu. 'I J The end of Christian education is to cooperate with divine grace in forming the true and perfect Christian . . . to form Christ in those regener- ated by baptism. WHERE THERE IS PROGRESS, changes are inevitable. At Xavier High School, nineteen fifty-six will be remembered as a year of endings and a year of bright beginnings. First, it marks the realization of an old, old dream inthe completion of the first two units of the new high school. Into this sparkling new world, students and faculty have carried the spirit of the old Xavier, keeping its loved traditions, but adapting them to different surroundings, and building on the foundations of the past for a fruitful, glorious future. Too, it commemorates a decade of graduating classes, as the An- niversary Class walks through the daisy chain to the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, and thence into the strange new world of woman- hood. But more important than these is the change wrought in each in- dividual student in her progress toward the Ideal . . . toward the form- ing of Christ in her personality. This changing world . . . the life of every girl at Xavier . . . ma- terial and intellectual and spiritual expansion . . . putting off the old and donning the new . . . linking the past with the future by the inde- structible ties of loyalty and love . . . These are the never-to-be-forgotten days . . . the days we would hold undimmed in memory. And so, with pencil, pen, and camera, we strive to catch them as they hurry toward their sunset, and press them, like the petals of a flower, between the covers of the 1956 Xavierian. 2 . v ,Hi 115, 33,1 . From the day Christ established the Church and gave her the divine commission to feed His lambs and sheep, it has been her claim in theory and in practice that true education must include a reli- gious and moral training. This is, of course, but common sense. Of what avail is a physical or intellectual giant if his career is not guided by moral principles? This explains then why your teachers and parents have been willing to make so many sacrifices that you might enjoy the benefits which have come to you during the years of your schooling. Now, that you are graduating, be mindful of the privilege that you have had by employing your education to good advantage always with a view to your last end. Ultimately this it is that counts. Nothing else has lasting value. On this happy occasion, l send a blessing with greetings to all the teachers and students of Xavier High School. l Bishop of Tucson 10 4:::2 ' My dear Graduates: We happily congratulate you as the tenth graduating class and as the first of the new Xavier High School. You were given the sacred trust of bringing to the new school all the loving traditions of the old. And the most cherished is Xavier's filial devotion to Mary. She has stood as the gracious symbol of everything that is noble in human nature. Woman above all women glorified, Our tainted nature's solitary boast, Purer than foam on central ocean tossed. She has ever been Xavier High's glorious boast and you have carried her triurnphantly into the bright halls of the new school to reign supreme in the hearts of all girls of Xavier. We are sure that you will carry her and her virtues further - out from these walls into the world that sorely needs more women much like your glorious Mother Mary. God love you and keep you in His care. II FHCULTU fi-'H' ' Rev. William F. Ferrell, S.J .....,.. ......... R eligion Rev. Pierre Jacobs, S.J .......... , ..... ......... C hemistry Rev. William F. The tremendous change that enters your life today has been long in coming and long in preparation. Yet in your heart you realize that it was all too short, as school doors close behind you and you walk into a clif- ferent life. Into that new life take from the old all that has been good and use- ful: knowledge, yes, and skills in many fields, but, more than these, take with you the pride of your Christian heritage. Take your ideals, clarified and strengthened in completely Christian surroundings, your friendships and your loyalties, never to be relinquished or forgotten, the wisdom that comes from daily contact with the Spirit of Holiness and Truth. Take into your world those strong principles of Catholic womanhood, learned at Mary's knee, that you may be a citadel to,those less favored than your- self. Take your tender love for Christ and let it shine with ever-growing brightness in your life. Take a strong heart and a valiant spirit, so that you, the end-product of Catholic education, may freely give what you have so freely received. And take with you, too, dear Graduate, the love and devotion of your teachers here at Xavier, and the promise of our prayerful concern through all your years.
