This is my first year here ' and I must admit that I am nervous about having accepted the job. I'm not quite sure what to expect this-year, but it can't be too bad. . or can it? There are several things that I've already noticed which set Wyoming Seminary apart from the crowd. Hopefully, l'll be able to report these things to you, as well as the other things which will make this year special. We dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Mary Tribler. Her patience and perseverance, diligence and devotion, honesty and forthrightness have become an inherent part of Wyoming Seminary history and tradition. Mrs Tribler joined the faculty in 1946 to teach mathematics 'part-time, and for a few weeks. This temporary assignment developed into a thirty-two year career. At the time of her death in August 1978, she was the senior member of the faculty. Her years of service to our school spanned five presidents and several enerations of students And her relationships students truly revealed her interpretation of being teacher she was not a pal but she was a 1 though serious about her work she enjoyed the humor which arises in classroom situati committed to the idea of thorough and meaningful education she firmly but kindly led her st ln her personal life Mrs. Tribler was a giver of her time her worldly goods her friendship shared herjoys and sorrows with family and friends She was not afraid to face a problem and i c The memory of Mrs. Tribler is an inspiration to all who knew her she realistically approached dealt with it wisely and efficiently gave it her effort talent and spirit and received from it joy and satisfaction We have a very warm memory of a very fine lady Mrs Mary Tri il 'E I Q ,J lv- 4 , . .IT 1. ,Egg , , 1 v ,., 3? Wyoming Seminary's Madrigal Singers were invited to Italy in April 1979 to compete in the International Choir Festival in Rome. To help raise money for the trip, julie Goldstone fnicknamed lulioj came up with a splendid idea of changing the Student Center into a mad disco, hence, julio's. With the help of Mike Robson, jay Harvey, Ray Cabot and john Brunot, the studio 54 of Sem was born. Not only was the music tremendous and the lighting superb, but the decorations were fabulous as well. Thanks to many, drapes went up and black light posters glimmered. Also, an entire seating arrangement was set up for cocktails , Waitresses were on the job throughout the four hour extravaganza, and four Madrigal men gallantly tended the beverages. Mary Haggerty whipped up some French aprons to match the waitresses' black attire. A roaring dance contest was offset by its winning couple Dawn Bryfogle and Howard Lewis. magnificent sign which stood eight feet high and four feet wide, was in front of the Student ter Thanks to Robin Maclntyre and Mark Troy s technique, this flashing, fire engine red and r all was said and done on Monday morning a gesture of thanks was shown by the Student ernment Sara Slaff presented julio with a certificate of merit. came off and the glamour wore off julio's 54 lives on as an event long to be Stage Manager . . , Property Crew . . . The show's director was Mr. W. Carver Collins, the cast consisted not only of students, but faculty members as well. ln order to add interest, Mr. Collins said that a surprise appearance would be made by four special guests: Mr. Crocker, Mr. Eidam, Mr. Klarsch, and Mr. Lull. The play that was selected is The Man Who Came To Dinner, which was written by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. The play is filled with ironic humor, and what adds to the comedy is the fact that the characters are true to life, and have no idea how funny they really appear to be. The story revolves around a world famous broadcaster named Sheridan Whiteside who visits a family in a small Ohio town. At the end of this visit Mr. Whiteside has an unfortunate accident which prevents him from leaving. Then, he proceeds to turn the previously quiet household upside-down with his fast-paced, self- centered way of life. Mr. Whiteside was played by Dr. Andrew Costello. Dr. Costello had no previous theatrical experience, however, that did not stop him from providing the charisma that is necessary to portray successfully the character. Other major roles were played by jennifer jones, Frank Kren, and julie Goldstone. The performances of the play were on Friday and Saturday, February 23, 84 24. Curtain time was at 8 PM on both evenings. Stl he Min I , -who came 'lrqf ,' To 'Dih'NGY' 48 ter-Society Sports OXONIAN RLEIANDRIAN A f x f EJWESSM -1- 4-' -,J J. K. .lk 3 X.. X , x x Q ,. The returning players had a lot of help from new students and an Assistant Coach, Carol Cavanaugh. With our new assistant coach working the l.V.'s, Coach Klassner had more time to work with the Varsity. Although the team was very strong the competition was equally as keen. Lake Lehman proved to be our most worthy opponent as they put us second in league standings. But the future looks very bright for the Tigers. Now that we are number two like Avis, we'll try harder! The 1978 Blue Knight Football Team was not what it may have appeared to have been on the surface. A spectator watching the team might have said that they were just like the last two Seminary football teams. In fact, this statement was quite true in the win-loss column, however, Coach Antinnes and his squad were faced with a rather large problem. The problem was the number of injuries on the team. From the start, the team was forced to cope with gouged and gushing lacerations, broken bones, separated and torn muscles, and gympy kneecaps. Yet they defended the longest winning streak in the state of Pennsylvania against such opposing forces as the Lycoming College junior Varsity, the psyched Perkiomen Indians, and the big, hard hitters from the Williamson Trade School. The team and the coaching staff are to be applauded for through all of the hardship that they encountered, they came out- well, maybe not smelling like roses, but definitely like winners. 58 1-B . After shutting out Blair and Hill, teams which Sem had never beaten, the team's record was extended to 4-0-2, including the loss to Valley West. Sem had unimpressive wins over Mercersburg and Mountain View. Then, Sem lost twice in three days to Bishop Hafey by identical 2-1 scores. An overtime victory over Montrose, another team Sem had never beaten, brought the Knights back to life. In the team's final game, we avenged the first loss to Valley West. The score was 5-1. If it had not been for leg injuries to halfbacks Mike Hudacek and Donny Robbins, this year's team may have gone to the league championship. Eric Schall and Bob Decker complemented center halfback Russ Holdridge enough to prevent a disastrous ending to the team. Sems defense included goalie lay Harvey and fullbacks Ray Cabot, john Musnuff, Mark Sherman, and Blair lennings had only three games in which they allowed more than two goals. The offensive line of lay Zavada, Charles Parkhurst, Keith Larson, Paul Lumia, and Brad Libenson supplied thirty-eight goals. Coaches Post and Costello are looking forward to next year when Sem will play its home games in 60 Wyoming instead of Lehman. 1978 Varsity Soccer Team: First row, left to right- E. Hall fManagerl, R. This year's golf team was the finest team Wyoming Seminary has ever had. It went undefeated this year during regular season ill-0-ll and won the regular season championships as well as the playoffs. It had four players who were selected for the all star team and two who were chosen for all-scholastic honors. However the team was strong in all six positions this year. Each member of the team contributed to the team's success. These members were Lester Smulowitz, Bill Musto, john Hendrzak, David Dalessandro QDDJ, Scott Paterson, Peter Sielicki, and Rusty Tippett. Each of them were invaluable to the squad. Bill Musto is one of the finest junior golfers in the country. He has participated in statewide, national, and international tournaments with tremendous success. I promise you that he will be on the tour within five years. Keep your eyes open, because that husky boy from West Pittston has all the tools. Lester Smulowitz is the only player in the league's history to make all-scholastic all four years. He went undefeated this year and only lost four matches in his four years here at Wyoming Seminary. Lester also would like to try for the tour when he graduates from college. lohn Hendrzak and David Dalessandro played three and four respectively. Both of them had superb campaigns and both made the league's all star team. Several matches were decided by their tremendous performances. Both were invaluable assets to the team. Scott Paterson and Peter Sielicki were devastating this year. Scott played tremendously despite his not playing all summer long. Peter was a key to our winning the championships. Without them we would not have had a chance. Doc Moriarity was the coach this year. We all want him to know how much we care for him. He is the fairest coach in the league as well as a true friend to each member of the team. We all respect Doc as a human being as well as a coach and appreciate all he has done for us. Last year we promised that we would win the league championship. We fulfilled our promise. The big question now is Which is the better team, golf or football? . The answer is obviousg golf! At times the Knights played much better than their final 6-17 record indicates. Coach Vanderburg's squad lost two games by four points to Hanover and C.A.R., the two best teams in the league. The original starting team of center Ren Hall, forwards Bill Musto and Mark Weinberger, a guards Charles Parkhurst and Mark Robbins had its troubles playing together, for only Mu nd sto and Parkhurst started on last year's team. The additions of Louis Butera and john Balsis fRen sprained his anklej into the starting lineup seemed to help, but the team lacked height without their center. The highpoint of the season was Sem's win over the Hill School which was a very strong team. The regular season was filled with exciting, close games, but the Knights rarely won them. The girl's swim team showed much improvement this year, though many obstacles hindered our progress. The team suffered from a lack of swimmers and the loss of our coach at midseason, but it overcame these setbacks and finished the season a stronger team despite them. Although our team record was 2-14, all ofthe meet scores were considerably better than the previous year. Our record did not reflect the hard work put in by the girls, the team spirit, or the improvement, especially in the last half of the season. The outlook for next year's team is hopeful since the majority of the team is made up of sophomores and freshmen. The team will be losing only two seniors: Captains Renee Llewellyn, who excelled in diving, and Nona Edwards, who contributed many valuable points in the 200 I.M. and the 100 yard breaststroke. Not enough credit can be given to the other members of the team, each spent long hours working to improve both her individual times and the team scores. Coach Owen Lavery, who replaced Paul Niedzwiecki at midseason, should also be thanked, he set an example of dedication and inspired us to work harder toward improvement. We hope to see him next year for our best season ever. 1' Cl' P ,- W, if .Q-6'F-kj Y' 4 B0yS Swimming First row - I to r- Lavery, Coach, D. Gunster, F. Giuffre, W. Bronson, S. Pierson. Second row -I to r -W. Burak, P. Powlick, N. Lyons, C. M. Brown, j. Horrigan, A. Lottic, j. D'Angrossa. This year's swim team posts a respectable 6-8 record, but this record does not reflect the team's hard workin overcoming early season problems. The season opened with Paul Niedzwicki coaching for the second consecutive year. However, recurring discipline problems and a disappointing 1-3 start caused Niedzwicki to resign. The team was lucky enough to get Owen Lavery, who had coached the team in 1975-76, as head coach. Mr. Lavery did an outstanding job guiding the team to a 5-5 record the rest of the way, including a 41-38 upset over Valley West. The nucleus of the team consisted of four seniors, co-captains john Horrigan and Mike Brown, Norman Lyons and Bill Burak. Brown garnered many firsts in the 200 individual medley and the butterfly, while Horrigan captured many firsts in the distance freestyle events. Lyons showed great improvement, starring in the 50 and 100 freestyles, while Burak provided much needed depth in the distance and sprint freestyles. Showing tremendous improvement under Lavery's coaching were sophomores Adam Lottick and Walter Bronson, and freshman Don Ciunster. Senior Phil Powlick not only provided strong depth to the individual medley, but captured many firsts in the individual medley. Also providing depth and showing promise for the future are freshmen Stewart Pierson and joe D'Agrosa, sophomores Mike Polk and Curtis Coates, and junior Madhu Swami. The diving was handled by juniors Frank Guiffre and Richard johnson. Despite the loss of five experienced seniors, the improvement of the underclassmen during the season promises good things in the future. The team will be young next year, but with the enthusiasm shown during the year and the hopeful return of Lavery as coach, the team should develop rapidly. Under the guiding forces of Coaches Clark Switzer and Keith Hampton the track team completed very successful season. The team's dual meet record was 4-1, and they finished at the Peddie Relay with an impressive 4th place The Peddie Relays showed the strength of this year's team and of its individuals. The relays als provided an opportunity for certain team members to exhibit their mechanical abilities. The trip t Perkiomen gave the coaches a chance to display their skills, as well a W 'J showing the depth of this year's team Next year's team, although it's losing many talented seniors an P.C.'s, appears to have potential. Kersey fcoachj. The 1979 baseball team began the season with hopes of a league championship. After a strong exhibition season, the team opened the league season as the Division favorite, G.A.R. Sem fought with equal skill for 6 innings but gave up the winning run with two out in the seventh. This loss seemed to leave the squad with an empty feeling that carried throughout the season. Many games were within reach, but the runs couldn't be pushed across the plate when they were most needed. After 16 consecutive losses, Sem avenged G.A.R. with a rainy 5-4 extra-inning victory at home. The winning pitcher was Rob Menn. lim Hoyes had the game winning hit. Sem then defeated Perkiomen in ' an exhibition before handing Seton Catholic a 7-5 loss. This year's seniors who played their last season as Knights are Captain Scott Paterson, john Hendrzak, Rob Decker, Rob Menn, and lim Hoyes. The juniors ' who will form the nucleus of next years team are Ray Cabot, who turned in a fine defensive performance this season, Bill Lamoreaux, co- captain for next year, lay Zavada, lack Reese, co- captain for next year, lay Harvey, and hot-hitting l Todd Magic lscovitz. Sophomore Kevin Reese will also be back, along with a talented group of freshman. Many thanks go to Hana Prashker, our manager, and Coaches Kersey and Smith for keeping us together when things looked bleak. 1 165 Tennis 1979 Wyoming Seminary Tennis Team: First row - left to right - D. The Knights dominance over the rest of the league continued as it has over those years. The most significant moments came in non-league play. Sem avenged its loss to Hill School by trouncing them 6-1. The seasons greatest thrill was probably winning the State College Invitational Tennis Tournament. The Sem netmen edged Erie Cathedral Prep in the team tournament. They won first, second, and fourth singles and first and second doubles. Leading the team this year were Charles Parkhurst, Don Robbins, Mark Fuzzy Robbins, Bill Burak, and Richard Hughes. Tom Crissman and Norman Lyons also saw a lot of singles action. Doubles specialists included Brian Ufberg, Andy Nelson, and the Kluger trio. Coach Lull is optimistic about next year's team. Special thanks to him and manager Phyllis Barnes for guiding the team through such a successful season. Ciirl's Softball 1979 Wyoming Seminary Softball Team: First row - left to right- B. Although the team was smaller than last year's the team spirit appeared to indicate that the team was larger than last years. Our record was 6-12. This record is a result of numerous injuries to the starting lineup. The loss of Carole Alexander, Molly Minkey Davies, and Elaine English, due to their injuries, was greatly felt by the team. This year the team was led by Carole Alexander and Deb Lanton who did a superb job of maintaining team spirit and leading the team while on the field. Karen Klassner coached and was assisted by Dave Davies. Talk about the Dynamic Duo! The starting lineup consisted of Shari Berman, Deb Lanton, Sue Halliday, Hilary Maslow, Elaine English, Carole Alexander, Patty Robertson, Molly Minkey Davies, and our pitchers judy Dunham and Nancy Swain. The bench was a tremendous asset to the team, spiritually and substitutionally. Our most exciting game this year was played against Crestwood. We beat them 23-ll. Winning this game was so important because Crestwood had beaten Lake Lehman, our perennial rival, and Lake Lehman had beaten us. We felt that we avenged our loss to Lake Lehman. Next year's captains are Daphne D'Zurko and Deb Lanton. With their help, a returning bench, and our coaches, we have a chance at being NLJMERO UNO! i H 1. Yr, ., -. . 1 -' 1 ' vb D. 'iw 3.-.-Ali: . .
