The man holding the big stick, Editor Richard Klein, a firm believer in freedom of the press, keeps under his control twenty-nine staff and board members. Al- though he doesn't actually crack the whip, he has high standards which necessitate hard work from the entire board. Richard's right-hand helpers, Mern English, Midge Stevens, Mark J. The total resources of the senior members are concentrated on a single thing: converting a docile young subiect into a dyed-in-the-wool Sem- inarian. Under her direction, amalgams of veget- ble necklaces, old clothes, and lipstick-smeared faces roam the campus. But these things are only temporary, fleeting degradations, all dispelled by the soft candle light of formal initiation. The Adelphian Society has provided for the varie- gated talents of its members. Sarah Bernharts may emote in the Inter-Society Play, the silver- tongued display their ability in the Oratorical and Declamation Contests, and those more domestical- ly inclined may show their talents oFf in the fre- quent bake sales. For those humanitarians, there are food baskets to be distributed at Thanksgiv- ing and Christmas. Besides all this, they were hostesses at a Blue and White and instrumental in helping the United Fund reach its goal. My Fair Lady Platonnians Ask any girl boarder and she will tell you that the Plattonian Society is wholesome, honorable. devoted to the school and filled with good works. Every word is true. This Society, which encour- ages the membership of every boarder girl, can reveal an honorable tradition in promoting school activities. The Platts , along with their brother society the Independents, put on an inter-society play each year. This year they did a superb job on The Valiant . They compete with fervor against the Indepen- dents and Arnphictyons in the Declarnation and Oratorical Contests. This year Maryellen Strass- burger carried home the laurels for her Society by winning the Oratorical Contest. The Platts are not only actresses and public speakers, but they are great cooks and saleswomen, for every year they are in charge of the girls' snack bar on the fourth floor of Swetland. Congratulations to the Society and Miss Oswald, their faculty adviser, for a terrific year. What's Wrong With This Picture? Independents Chief in the memories of most Independents is one thing - their initiation. Likely as not, Independents are apt to vent considerable energy in the induction of their new stooges. Each fall strange creatures pour out of Carpenter and Darte dressed in a garb that defies description. During this initiation period novice Inde- pendents are subjected to inhuman treatment and they meekly resign themselves to suffer their fates in silence. Once through this initiative portal, the Independent is a part of Seminary's close-knit and symbolic societies. He waits anxiously for each encounter with his day- student counterpart in the Debate, Oratorical Contest, Declamation Contest, and Inter-Society Play. The Independent Society, one of the more active or- ganizations on campus, has accomplished several goals which have been striven for during the past two years. The first of these is the installation of a chrome-plated railing at the Boys' Snack Bar in the basement of Car- penter Hall. This rail, installed at heavy expense, has more than paid for itself, however, due to a great boom in business encountered during the past semes- ter. The second goal achieved is that of the addition of a Coke machine in the basement of Carpenter. This machine is a second source of income to the Society, the first being the Snack Bar itself. With the assistance and guidance of Prof. lngling, the chief adviser, the standards of the Society have been raised so that in future years more may be expected of, and accomplished by, this Society. - -vs. INDEPENDENT SOCIETY First row-J. H . . , - - U ' 1 I -' ' T 1 l l 60 The Debate On January T5 T958 in Nelson Memorial Chapel Arn phictyon was pitted against Independent negative against affirmative in a tradition honored by more than one hundred years The forensic question involved in this years debate vvas Resolved that a democratic government is more beneficial to the people than an aristocratic one The proponents for the affirmative Mark Harris Martin Finkleman and Sam Pearlman al ternate who represented the Independents cited the United States a nation conceived and nourished democracy as an outstanding tribute to the merits of democracy In all they axlomatically believed in the ability of the people to rule themselves competently Their delivery was spirited their manner vigorous they characterized the unrestrained exuberance we ha we semantically associated with democracy Conversely the Amphictyon presentation as delivered by Richard Klein Bernard Wruble and Michael Sumner alternate was a logical ratiocination of facts devoid of any chauvan sm After chiding us for having roman tic notions about the expediency of democracy they devised a system of mental and aptitude tests that would determine those best qualified to rule imperson ally and Without preludice Their oratory was polished and their demeanor reserved and calm altogether befitting their interpretation of this moot point After the ludges had deliberated their choice was an nounced. Big smile for the fans. ..,.,,R ,ff Inter-Society Play Contest Each year the Plattonian and Independent Societies rehearse a one-act play to be placed in competition with a similar Adelphian-Amphictyon endeavor. This contest provides the opportunity for society members to display their dramatic abilities. This year both plays were well-castg however, Wings of Darkness scored over The Valiant, bringing victory to the day students. Credit should be given to its co-producers, Linda Kiley and Janet Green. Meeting Sunday nights at eight o'clock, the C.A., as it is commonly called, holds a short service, and follows this service with a speaker or a discussion. A few of its functions are sponsoring V the C. W' 7 C if Md-2 P .W K May Day May Day f that wonderful, fantastic, magic day when Seminary's back campus suddenly Turns in- to a wonderland of laughter, flowers, gaiety, and fairytale characters. This year the Cinderella story came to life in a burst of color and dancing. All the characters and guests honored their chosen May Queen, Miss Jeanne Mattern, who was sur- rounded by her charming attendants - Miss Bar' bara Johns, Miss Helen Llewellyn, Miss Jean Gib- bons, and Miss Margaret Doumaux. Even the fro- licking court iesters honored their queen with precision tumbling factually they were the Girls' Tumbling Club who had been sprinkled with the magic dust of a beautiful queen.l The pageantry and pomp lasted the entire afternoon bringing smiles and laughter to everyone, but as all good things, the magic spell was soon broken and the back campus was suddenly turned back into the hockey field. Knights Fbblball The i957 edition of the Knights began their gridiron campaign in an unsuccessful fashion as the Cadets of Manlius soundly trounced them, Al-O. Following this inauspicious opening, games with Valley Forge and the Dickinson Frosh were cancelled due to the flu epi- demic. It was a different story, however, in the home opener, as the boys had little trouble in downing the East Stroudsburg Freshmen by a score of 25-12. Flu again caused a cancellation as the Perkiomen game was stricken from the records. Bordentown, Mercersburg, and Stevens Trade all proved too powerful for the Knights to handle, and three more defeats were added to the record. Thus the shortened season ended with a l-win, 4-loss final record. Although the Knights looked superb in their victory over the East Stroudsburg club, the most exciting game of the season was undoubtedly played against the Stev- ens Trade School. Stevens, undefeated for three years, was expected to win handily over our club. By fine line play, the Knights managed to hold Stevens' speedy backs to a minimum of yardage. The Knights' backfield, meanwhile, was afforded excellent protection as they drove toward the Stevens' goal Several drives stalled however, and the Knights fell short of their desired victory. The score was I9-I3, but Stevens knew that they had been in a rough game and were lucky to come out of it with any victory at all. Spearheading the Knights' attack this year were Walter Doleschal, Andy Larko, Larry Correll, John Williams, Tony Mizzer, Al Burnaford, John Moleton, and Mike Kulikowicz. Credit must also be given Head Coach Harry Wilson, who worked hard to build a good team - a team that fought hard, but which was unfortunate as far as the record book was concerned. Just can't guess? Well, who stand up and block the view iust as a Sem star is about to break a tie game or love to steal the show at time-outs. lt's not the hockey team so it must be our demure, ever lovin' cheerleaders who do more to keep the school spirit high than coke and coffee on a long school night. Name the school sports event and there they are urging the agile athletics on to the sweet taste of glory. They're always smiling. Girls' Field Hockey One of the most popular of the girls' sports is field hockey. In the brisk fall afternoons the click of hockey sticks is a familiar sound on back campus. Competition is keen on both the Varsity and JV teams, and once the teams are chosen the pace is even more feverish. This year, despite a serious bout with the flu, the varsity hockey team did exceptionally well. Under the direction of a new coach, Miss Carol Evans, they managed to continue their winning ways of the past years, and rolled up a solid 5-2 record for the season. Because of the illness of several of the players, the team was unable to hold Clark's Summit and Meyers, the latter game being decided by the slim margin of JUNIOR VARSITY HOCKEY Seated-V. Edmunds. Although the squad suffered two successive defeats, it nevertheless had the spirit to come back and end the season with a pair of victories, the final one a resounding I2-O runaway over Marywood Seminary. After the exciting season, the players put away their hockey stickes and shin guards but kept the wonder- ful memories -- of the hard-fought games in the rain where the ball couldn't be found for the mud-of the quiet bus rides home where the lilting strains of Are Ye Able echoed throughout the bus. They remember the familiar conversation . . . What did you do then? - Why I hit her with my hockey stick, of course! , and Don't piddle with the ball. . . drive it harder. . . harder! Knights Basketball From the opening encounter with the Manilus Military Academy Cadets, until the final whistle against Valley Forge, the Knights' basketball campaign met with dis- aster. Despite numerous scrimmages and a heavy practice schedule, the crowded conditions of anti- quated Pettebone Gym hampered their development so that costly mistakes arose on several occasions throughout the season. Height was perhaps the fore- most reasons for the poor log, but a 2-12 record may not be attributed to this alone. Lacks in both teamwork and shooting often played large parts in undermining the team's potential for success. After the Manlius fiasco, for which the Knights were not really ready, training began for a mid-January en- counter at Stevens Trade. Outclassed, they lost this one, as well as two more within a week. All three de- feats were the immediate results of a lack of height. In the first home game of the season, the Wilkes Frosh found a much improved Sem squad. Although the Knights were beaten, they were beginning to show signs of coming around. After a defeat at the hands of a hopelessly superior squad of Kings J.V.'s, the Knights, led by Bill Crum, took a crowd-pleasing thrill- er from the Valley Forge Cadets. From the outset it was apparent that the soldiers had left their shooting eyes as well as their rifles back at the barracks as the Knights took an early lead and managed to stave off a last-period rally for a 78-72 victory. The winning ways were not for long, however, as Stevens Trade took their second from us, this by a count of 68-56. On a snowy week-end in mid-February, St. Francis poured in 35 fourth quarter points to cop an 83-70 decision. Following this, Keystone's Little Giants engineered a slim victory of two points as they meshed two foul shots in the final ten seconds. Perkiomen's Preppers, the tallest team faced by the Knights during the season, picked up two wins as they downed the Knights in successive contests, after which the Sem squad downed St. Francis for their second victory, 65-57. The final game of the season found the Cadets of Valley Forge avenging their earlier defeat by copping a startling 70-52 win. The Knights had their individual stars. Bill Crum, the team's high point man, was undoubtedly the most valuable. Backing him up were Tom Crane, Jabbo Williams, Doug Huffcut, and Chris Dhimitri, all of whom had their high point nights as well. This was the first year that the Knights played in pri- marily prep school competition. The new schedule was tough, and such a change would be hard for any team to undertake. The situation of overcrowdedness will be overcome next year with the completion of the new gym, so that it is very likely that next winter Sem sports fans will see a completely renovated team on the court. High School . 42 58 Meyers High School . . . . 33 90 Marywood Seminary .. . 52 59 Coughlin High School ... . 53 Girls' Baskelball With a record of thirteen wins to a single loss, the girls' basketball team, under the able direction of its coach, Mrs. Stitzer, certainly was a tremendous success. lt not only continued as the best girls' team in Wyoming Valley, but again led all other teams at Seminary in percentage of wins. Opening the season against the West Side Catholic girls, our squad edged out the powerful Queens by a five-point margin. We might add that the superb shooting of the forwards and highly successful re- bounding ofthe guards evident in this game were con- tinued throughout the season. The toughest game of the year was supposed to be the one with G.A.R. Cboth teams were undefeated up to that timel, but the girls real thriller came, surprisingly enough, against their arch-rival Clarks Summit, whom they had easily de- feated earlier in the season. Out to avenge their in- glorious failure, these girls became the only ones to outscore the home team, but that the victory was won by only a single point indicates that it was a lively battle all the way, and it could have gone either way. Unfortunately, time favored Clarks Summit. After this game, the roughest part of the season had been com- pleted, and the girls won the final four games by large scores. This team was essentially the hockey team playing basketball, and the list of outstanding players in the two sports is practically identical. Captain Carol Valenti was the star, being high-scorer in every game and also the holder of the regional record in girls' foul-shooting. Closely following here were forwards Diane Ringawa and Jean Gibbons, both of whom racked up a con- siderable number of points in each game. On the de- fensive side ofthe court, guards Mayi Daw, Jo Brown, Judy Casper, and Tina Clark proved amazingly efficient rebounders. The only comment that remains to be rnade is that the wonderful teamwork and spirit was noticeable until the final shrill of the whistle marked the end of the 1957-58 season.
