X V ,, X , an ' as Y 'I Yr , 'XM f xx! g Dr. Decker has given much of his life to make Wyoming Seminary a better school. DR. RALPH W. DECKER DR. DECKER, a native of Dunmore, Pennsylvania, has had an extensive education. In 1928 he was graduated from Wyoming Seminary, and then went on to receive his A.B. degree from Wesleyan University, and his M.A., S.T.B. and Ph.D. degrees from Boston University. He also traveled in Europe and studied at the University of Berlin. In 1950, he assumed the Presidency of Wyoming Seminary. The Doctor's personal hobbies consist of coin collecting and assisting his wife in her collection of glassware. Dr. Decker has won the friendship and esteem of the entire student body with his understanding and affable personality. Dr. Wilbur Fleck, our president emeritus, has given his entire life in the work of Wyoming Seminary. He was a true inspiration to the students while he was here. DEAN JAMES A. ADAMS Dean of Wyoming Seminary, head of the Mathematics Department, and a friend to all. is this helpful New Englander. Dean Adams came to Seminary in 1920 after graduating from the University of Maine and receiving his M.A. at Columbia. A veteran of World War I, he has traveled extensively in Europe, the United States, Canada, and the West Indies. Some of the Dean's hobbies are photography, coin col- lecting, and stamp collecting. His crowded advanced algebra class and the endless line of students at his office door are proof of his wit, wisdom, and eHiciency. The Class of 1955 wishes to thank Dean Adams. MISS ERMA E. FOSTER Perhaps one of the best known figures on campus is our own Miss Erma E. Foster. Miss Foster has been a member of the faculty here at Seminary for many years. She is a graduate of Oberlin College and has done graduate work at Oberlin, Syracuse, and Cornell. Miss Foster teaches classes in mathematics, and is an indis- pensable part of Swetland Hall. She will always be remembered for her advice and assistance to the students. We, the Class of '55, extend a very earnest thank you to the Dean of Girls. J. T. HUGHES The amiable associate dean of Seminary is Professor J. Theodore Hughes. Upon him falls the duty and, at times, the unpleasant task of disciplining the students. Until this year he could be found about the campus with his detention lists. At all time he is patient and understanding. A native of Scranton, Prof. Hughes was a member of the Class of '24 of Wyoming Semi- nary. From here he went to Wesleyan University and later did graduate work at Cornell. In 1931 he joined Seminary's faculty and soon became a valuable asset. Besides the busy schedule of associate dean, he is the faculty adviser for the Honor Court and teaches chem- istry. Prof. Hughes is liked and respected by all. 'Wiz In Memormm I0 PROFESSOR PARKER H. BURT E AT Seminary, faculty and students alike, felt deeply the loss of Professor Parker H. Burt. The announcement was made by Dr. Decker in chapel on Tuesday, December 7, 1954. The next day in chapel a memorial service was held, and even those students who had never known Professor Burt realized that a part of the school itself had died. He First came to Seminary in 1919 and during his thirty-five years taught Latin and French. He became head of the Modern Language Department. Professor Burt took a personal interest in his students, and many of them always came to see him during their vacations to tell .him how they were getting along. He was never too busy to see them and give them advice. Those of us who had him in class will never forget his ready sense of humor or his fairness. The faculty remember him as a friend who gave his all to help make Seminary the school it is today. Respon- sibility for its publication is placed on the shoulders of a student editor, who is chosen in the spring of the previous school year by his class. During the summer he has the task of mapping out the assignments for the fall. In September a contest for positions on the various Annual boards is held. Judging is done by the faculty adviser and the editor, without favor- itism, and is based entirely on merit and cap- abilities. T.he members are then assigned to the boards-sport, editorial, biography. Much time is then spent by them fulfilling assignments. Every Tuesday in Room 7 the boards meet. After school the editors can be found working in the Annual Room in Darte Hall. Here are collected Frank Slattery, the editor: Sally Bierly, the associate editor: Francis Riofski, the biography editor: and Jack Ruggles, the sports editor. A A yearbook not only has'literary material, but it also includes pictures. These snapshots supplement the articles. The editor of the photography department is Dick Landy. He and his assistants work unceasingly throughout the year to catch the students off guard. The art board of the Annual has Barbara Stevens as its editor. Under the capable guid- ance of Miss V. Helen Anderson, the art staff has made valuable contributions to the beauty of the yearbook. For many years the faculty adviser for the Annual has been Prof. Harold Brown. His endless and tireless interest in the construction and progress of the yearbook has helped to make it a first-class publication. The publication of the Annual is always looked forward to by everyone. First Row-N. Quin, j. Ruggles, L. Herskovitz. Second Row-A. Smith, M. Barney, S. Kline, B. jones. First Row-M. Keefer, F. Q2 Y THE OPI ATOR Wyoming Seminary's weekly publication, the Opinator, is one of the country's most widely acclaimed secondary school publications. Con- taining editorials, literary material, humor, sports events, and news in general, it is no wonder that students are seen at noon on Fri- days buried in this magazine. Since its found- ing in 1883 by three of our societies, it has steadily grown, reaching a high point this year. Membership on the Editorial Board is at- tained through semi-annual literary competi- tion. In June recognition in the way of keys is given those members w.ho have done outstand- ing work for the Opinator. This year's staff, ably headed by David Clemens, editor, and janee Armstrong, associate editor, was com- posed of seven editors, three business man- agers, three class reporters, and eighteen board members under the guidance of Professor Wil- liam Shedleski, who substituted for Prof. Charles L. March, long time faculty adviser. The colorful and original covers were the work of the art students under the direction of Miss Helen V. Anderson. This publication is one for which the student body may well be grateful, for it offers opportu- nity for imagination, originality, and expression. We can all be proud of the fine Opinators and outstanding covers which were the work of this year's students. First Row-M. Reiley, M. Hughes, N. Quin, M. A. Bamey, R. Nelson, B. Stevens, S. Kline. With such able officers as President Virginia Baner, Vice-President Barbara Stevens, Sec- retary Mimi Hughes, and Treasurer Janet Silver, it can be easily understood why every Plattonian project was a tremendous success. The Plattonians engage in both charitable and social activities. Their beneficial work includes clothing drives for the Koreans, contributions to the Infantile Paralysis Fund, and the sending of Care Packages to needy families. Among the social functions are the hilarious hazing of new members and the solemn formal initiation ceremony held after this trying period is over, swimming meets and baseball games with the Adelphians, and the responsibility of running the Girls' Snack Bar. In Sprague Hall is located the girls' day room containing over one hundred desks and numerous wall lockers. Throughout the day girls come in and get books. At lunch time it is the scene of before-chapel snacks, and later some of them eat their lunches there. In the room is a soda and milk vending machine. During the winter snow-shoes, overcoats, etc., may be found throughout the room. After three-fifteen the girls gradually take their belongings and go home. Located on the other side of the campus is Nesbitt Hall, the home of the boys' day room. Desks, wall lockers, and swivel chairs make up the furniture of the room that is so many boys' home for the duration of the day. Since the boys have taken charge of the day room during lunch time, Prof. Roberts said that the condition of the room has been improved. Fred gets his big chance. new 'i On january 12, 1955, the Annual Amphic- tyon-Independent debate, a feature of the school for almost one hundred years, was held. The question of debate was, Resolved, that the exclusion of Communist China from the United Nations as a long term policy would be a denial of the purpose of that organization. The aiiirmative team, the Amphictyons, consisted of Benjamin R. Jones III, Richard Salsburg, and Keith Rosen, the alternate. Dave Conrad, George Russell, and David F rie, the alternate, were the Indepen-dent team. The affirmative team based its argument on five points: the interest toward peace, the political advantages of having Red China a member of the United Nations, the prestige of the United States concerning the Asian policy, and the military and economic aspects of Red China that would benefit the U.N. and world peace, for the admittance of Communist China would weaken the pos- sibilities of World War III. The negative side argued that the history of the Chinese has shown them to be per- sistent imperialists, and therefore conformity to the principles and laws of the peace-seek- ing United Nations would be impossible. They also said her government is not ac- cepted everywhere as the true government of China, and today she violates and attacks the very purposes and laws of the U.N. in order to further her aggression. The negative said she would only pursue her own national and idealogical aims and contribute obstacles to the United Nations' policies. The debating team of the Amphictyons composed of Keith Rosenn, Richard Salsburg, and Ben R. Jones, III. Judges for the contest were Mr. Jackson Bird, headmaster of Seminary Day School: Dr. Wilbur Fleck, President Emeritus of Wyoming Seminaryg and Rev. Howard Goeringer, executive secretary of the Wyom- ing Valley Council of Churches. The winning team was decided to be the Independents. The twenty-five dollar prize for best speaker was presented by Mr. Bird to David Conrad of Scranton, Pa. THE DEBATE Jackson Bird presenting the award to David Conrad as outstanding debater. Nesbitt Annual Oratorical Contest, students and faculty heard four most interesting orations. The first speaker, Aileen Smith, spoke on Germs of Untruth telling the pathetic story of six Americans held captive in North Korea. She pointed out, also, the Communists' methods of forcing confessions in relation to germ war- fare. The topic of David Clemens of the Amphictyons was The Youth of England. His oration was concerned mostly with the differences and similarities among American and English youth. At this time Miss Audrey Moyer of the school of music presented two vocal pieces. The first representative of the boarders was Carol Wywiorski who described Strange Customs and Beliefs. This humorous speech included several weird practices of the South African and American Indians and the present fad of carrying charms for luck. The last speaker of the morning was Jacob Boltz Aileen Smith is receiving her prize for outstanding work in the Oratorical Contest. Preceding the decision of the judges, Jonathan Russin of the music school played a piano solo. It is unquestionable that the year was a successful one for the girls' boarding department of Wyoming Seminary. Coach Du- Charme's squad opened the season with a 7-0 win over Villanova. Defeats at the hands of Rutgers, Colgate, and Syracuse followed, but were offset by an impressive 34-0 win over East Stroudsburg. The three remaining games were won by the opponents: Columbian Prep., Cor- nell. and Stevens Trade. At the season's start Coach DuCharme had only two players returning from last year's squad. Credit is due him for forming a fighting team that opposed some of the top college frosh and prep school teams. They were interesting to watch in action and played several close, thrilling games in the Pettebone Gym. Three were decided in the last few seconds of play. The outstanding scorers were Dick Leisenring, Bob Brown, and Bob Martin in that order. Other fine players were Bob Steidle, Ralph Chase, and Jack Hawthorne. Coach Charles Tyler moulded .his spirited team into a fine working combination which fell to no team regardless of its strength. Excellent team spirit and determination to win characterized this year's team as they defeated the strong teams of Stevens Trade, St. Mary's, and Swoyersville. Each of the five starting play- ers, joe Elinsky, Scott Trethaway, John Valenti, Bob Lupcho and Ray Davis, averaged approxi- mately ten points a game. joe Elinsky's average of 18.9 points a game greatly aided the Squires' offense. The girls won four games, winning the first two games of the season and the last two games. They seemed to go into a slump in the games played in the middle of the season, but did not lose by very large scores and thus did not lose team spirit. The Me-yers game, played at home, proved 'O to be the most exciting game of the season. At the beginning of the game, the Seminary girls trailed by about ten points, but as the game progressed, they caught up to win by one extra point. At the end of the season, Carol Wywiorski was elected captain of the Varsity squad. From here it looks good! 'Viv cg ' Perhaps the reason for the losses was the fact that many of the members of the team are underclassmen, and with this material in future years the team will have more success- ful seasons. Also, there were many sicknesses w.hich contributed to the teams losses. We should like to congratulate Junior Varsity and Varsity teams for their wonderful spirit and diligent practice.
