The girls' Glee Club is comprised of approximately eighty
girls. It is divided into two sections-the Freshman-Sophomore
Chorus and the junior-Senior Chorus.
Ensembles and soloists from this group participated in many
assembly programs at school as well as in various churches in the
community. Students taking part in this phase included Constance
Hartman, Marcia Steketee, jane Demoray, Dorothy Demoray, and
Beatrice Drenten.
During these trying times it is exceedingly important that
music becomes a Part of every one's life. It has been said that in
the life of any artist the achievements of yesterday always must
fade before the opportunities of today. Therefore an artist strives
continually to improve his work. That is what our choral groups
aim to do, but not without pleasure, for they make it their business
to enjoy everything they do.

"How wonderful is the laurmm mire. Il is indeed the organ
of the soul." -- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The great need of America today is unity of spirit and the
dedication of self to a great common cause. Music is a form of
spiritual expression which of itself creates spiritual values and helps
to bring about spiritual union. We dedicate ourselves in songs be-
cause we can sing in our souls things we cannot find words to say
in prose.
The Boys' Chorus, composed of approximately forty voices
under the direction of Mrs. G. E. Engelien, finds that they are able
to put unlimited zeal and enthusiasm into their songsg and they
prove that singing together brings people together.
The outstanding event of the season in which this group parti-
cipated was the Spring Festival. The Boys' Quintette sang at the
Kent County Luncheon.
No one knows what these boys will have to endure before this
war is over. lf we have given them some enjoyable hours and lifted
their spirits through this singing of music, then it was worth all
the effort involved to maintain such organizations. Music will add
much to the moral strength of the nation, at a critical hour, when
the strength of America is the hope of the world.

"Music it was we brought from lJ6!ll'.ll--
l-And thus uplifted do we mount,
Like some celestial throng,
To realms of world forgotten joy
On wings of living song!
On wings of living song! Of living song!"
This familiar strain from "Salutation" by Gaines will always
associated with the Mendelssohn Club as their opening number
any vocal program in which that group participates
The Mendelssohn Club is composed of only sixteen girls chosen
their director because they showed outstanding ability in singing
well as in a general knowledge of music Most of the girls are
their Junior or Senior year in school.
