The school paper offers an opportunity for high school stu-
dents to practice the fundamentals of journalism. Members of the
staff have learned not only to write the news, but to publish it as
well. The commerce department, headed by Miss Haines, was of
tremendous help in instituting a system of cooperative production.
During the first semester, the department took over the typing and
mimeographing almost completely. Later, however, it helped to
shift this work to the staff itself.
This has been the tenth year in the history of the Beacon's
publication. Under the helpful guidance of Miss Burns, faculty
advisor, the staff had striven to live up to the precedent set in
former years. Circulation has been up, issues have been larger, and
the paper's proceeds have been greater than ever before. Several
special issues were published including the last one, a printed edi-
tion containing the Senior Prophecy, Class Wfill, and news of the
senior trip. New columns, such as "Fads and Fashions," "Inter-
views," reviews of books in our library, and letters from former
students and teachers have been introduced. Gordon Beld instituted
his "Sports in the Showers" column and the Beacon sponsored a
short story contest, Lucille Jones, exchange editor, brought Wyom-
ing the latest from other schools while Sally Lous covered ele-
mentary news for a new feature.

Early in the second semester, selected members of the class of
"44" went to work with enthusiasm, to produce not just another
"Orbit," but a yearbook which the class can publish with pride.
Phyllis Freeberg was chosen Editor-in-Chief. W'irh the able
assistance of her two associates, Betty Breese and Clair De Mull,
Phyllis worked very hard to accomplish the task of organizing the
book. The fellow who stayed up nights to write some of these
articles, was the Literary Editor, jack Round. Don Early did a
splendid job as Sports Editor. Photography Editor was Bill Chand-
ler. Did he have his worries! No film. His associate was Esther
Wfilliams.
The honors for the "Orbit" assembly and the increased sub-
scriptions, go to the Business Manager, Gay jellema and her associ-
ate, john Peppler.
There is no doubt but that without the advisement, encourage-
ment, and drive of our advisor, Mr. Zylstra, the 'lOrbit" would not
have been the success it is.

"Almost Eighteen!" That was the stage production in
form of a riotous comedy by Dana Thomas. Through Mr.
Zylstra's direction, this play was a great success.
The plot became rather complicated when our "almost
eighteen" youth, Eddie, played by Eugene Hoffert, had
ideas about becoming a successful crooner like Crosby. He
must earn his own money for the completion of his ambi-
tions to go away to school, for his father opposed them.
His troubles began when he decided to enter a contest.
His uncle George meant to aid him, but accidentally he
sent the wrong manuscript which was really copied from
some book.
There was great excitement until all was finally straight-
ened out, and Eddie was cleared of this suspected treachery.

Much must be attributed to the ambitious and tireless
stage crew and committees who were largely responsible
for two excellent performances.
