GRID IRON ACTION IS THE HEART OF FOOTBALL New coaches, more coaches, a new system and new opponents marked the 1963 football sea- son for the Wy'east Grid team. A young team turned out and supplied a tough defense and a fast offense which gave Wy'east the highest ranking in recent years. Several coaches were added to the football staff so that each player could receive more at- tention. Coaches Day and Kronmiller served their first year on the Wy'east staff. The platoon system was introduced to keep players from tiring in competition. This pro- vided two full platoons of players which could replace each other when necessary. Two new opponents faced Wy'east this year, as Canby and Estacada joined the Wilco League. Both proved to be hard fighting teams. Wy'east earned praise for the tough defensive line of the Eagles. It held all of the opponents to short ground gains. No team managed to run for more than one touchdown against the Wy'east line. Outstanding in this department were Bob Morris and Tim Weygandt. The offense for Wy'east featured an alert and fast backfield which accounted for a large rushing yardage total. Quarterback Skip Swyers had ample support from Bob McElhose, Doug Radliff and Roger Short. These boys accounted for three-fourths of Wy'east's total scoring. Wy'east's passing attack showed great improvement over that of 1962. Sophomore Cam Axford and Senior Bob Morris proved effective at end positions. Parkrose proved to be the league's toughest team. Their victory over Wy'east started the Eagles on a three game losing streak which wrecked high hopes for a league championship. The Eagles came back strong to finish the season with two more wins. It all added up to a second place tie for the Eagles. Hopes are high for next season since this year's team was composed mainly of juniors and sophomores including a junior quarter- back.
