One comment made by many students is the availabil- ity of teachers and their will- ingness to help when needed. Many of the WHS faculty go beyond the call of duty. John Hoffler, WHS principal, ranks first on this list. In between meetings and other duties, Mr. Hoffler is seen in the halls with the students. He estimates that he knows more than nine hun- dred students by first and last name. Many faculty members are directly involved with the students as club advisors, coaches, and most importantly, friends. The curriculum at WHS ex- ceeds that of many other schools. Advanced courses are offered in almost every field. The courses allow students who are outstanding in a particular area to continue to broaden their knowledge. Independent courses are similar, but are planned by the teacher and stu- dent. The WHS curriculum is designed primarily to be col- lege prepatory, but there are courses for those interested in entering the “real world” im- mediately after graduation. Opening 5 6 Opcning Worthington High School hosts one of the finest academic programs, prides itself in its extra-curricular activities and func- tions very well within the three campus program; however, the students make the whole system shine. According to faculty as well as class- mates, the students of WHS have many fine qualities. WHS students are spirited, crazy, studious, go-getting, positive, athle- tic, caring, involved, preppy, dedicated, enthusiastic, stylish, energetic, friendly, creative, sporty, ambitious, original, vogue, individualistic, aggressive, expand- ing, assertive, broad minded, cooperative, rowdy, unique, devoted, independent, and last but not least, proud. That they should be because they are part of the number one high school in central Ohio. Opening 7 The strength of Worthington High School relies on its firm foundation which is student involvement. For this reason, Worthington High School not only forms a variety of academic courses, it offers a diversi- ty of extracurricular activities. Con- sequently, the school’s extracurricu- lar program is well equippped to sat- isfy the personalities, interests, and needs of a wide range of students. Students are encouraged to get in- volved, support fellow classmates, and show school spirit. Whether a student seeks a physical or intellec- tual challenge, the opportunity is everpresent at Worthington High School. 8 Opcning 10 Opcning From the moment a student enters his freshman years, he becomes aware of the closeness and togetherness of the three campuses that make Worth- ington High School outstand- ing in structure. Kilbournc campus, housing between 500 and 600 students, is located a half mile east of the main campus buildings. The seperation of the ninth grade is in reality a joining of two mid- dle schools. It provides an op- portunity for each class to form its own identity and character before entering classes with the sophomore, juniors, and sen- iors. Linworth campus, com- prised of 150 students ranging from ninth grade to twelfth grade, is the only alternative program in the Columbus sub- urban area. Once an elemen- ary building, Linworth is situ- ated between Olentangy River Road and Linworth Road off 161. The purpose of the cam- pus is to provide a less struc- tured educational atmosphere and bring in a family style en- vironment. The campus gov- ernment is democratically run, featuring the town meeting once a week for students to provide input into their aca- demic structure. Main campus, consisting of two buildings and three wings, houses more than 1500 stu- dents. With over 100 faculty members, there are a variety of classes offered to cater to the college bound student as well as the future homemaker. The uniqueness of the three campuses brings them closer. A student can fulfill his goals in numerous ways. The three campuses work together to form a whole that enable Worthington can be proud of Worthington High School. Opening 11 12 Events EVENTS Events 13 Can one madwoman really alter the fate of mankind? Without a doubt this year's fall play, “The Madwoman of Chaillot' sets out to prove this true. The play opens in a small cafe in Paris. As the people are laughing and carrying on the evil people of the world plan to blow up Paris. The Madwoman of Chaillot (Lisa Davidson) ar- rives on the scene with a mime and Pierre (John Ward) in- forms her of the evil people’s scheme. Aurelia (Lisa Davidson) calls the sewerman (Troy Mc- Donald), to show her the en- trance to Hell so she can rid the world of the evil people. Aurelia’s friends, Constance (Judy Blackmore), Gabrille (Kelly Hunt), and Josephine (Jennifer Clement), come and discuss the whole situation with her. Finally a trial is de- cided on and the rag-picker (Mike King) defends the evil people. After being found guilty, the evil people are tricked into going down to hell. Miraculously the world be- comes bright and cheerful, birds fill the air with song, and love is all around. This play is one of words and culture. Through the innova- tive thoughts and industrious efforts of Mrs. Hopton, Chris Lau, Mr. Scowden, Miss Hot- tenroth and Karen Sidar this year’s play was a great success and enjoyed by all those in- volved. I4 Events Madwoman Helps To Save Mankind Evenis 15 Conrad Birdie (Dave Dun- ham), the rock and roll star that was drafted into the Army, was to come to Swee- tapple, Ohio to give Kim McA- fee (Pam Bailey) the “last kiss” before he shipped off. This brilliant idea was created by Conrad’s manager Albert Peterson (Rich Greene), and his secretary, Rose Alverez (Lynn McNabb). Miss Alveres had other plans for Albert — like marriage. She wanted to become “Mrs. Albert Peter- son, the English teacher’s wife.” The story centers around the mischief Kim McAfee and her friends get involved in while Conrad is in their town. Magic Around Us has two main casts and three choruses, enabling more students to participate. The show travels to all the Worthington area elementary schools from May 5 to May 13 giving two or three perfor- mances a day at each school. As with all children’s plays produced at Worthington, Magic Around Us was a musi- cal. David Brown, 1981 Worthington graduate, wrote the original score. The play was the culmination of 18 months of work by both David and Larry. 18 Events Magic Around Us Evenis 19 Bianually, the Worthington High School Auditorium is converted into a courtroom, and the Mock Trials are pre- sented by Shirley Nault’s per- sonal law classes. The anxious participants are elected by their classmates and receive the case one week be- fore the trials are to begin. Then, the lawyers, defen- dants, plaintiffs, witnesses, and judges dig through research materials at the O.S.U. Law Library preparing to present the case before an auditorium of noted dignitaries from the community as well as their peers. Student body jury members listen objectively to the facts of civil suits, and dutifully present a verdict as another year of Mock Trials is adjourned. Many clubs and classes increased their treasuries. The Winter Carnival was once again a huge success. It was held on February 5 from 1- 4 p.m., with over 15 clubs and 21 booths. Clowns, popcorn. and even goldfish were on hand for the youngsters to enjoy. Sponsored by Student Council, the turnout was overwhelming. Traditionally, the Winter Carnival is one of the many ways clubs and organizations can keep money rolling in and have fun at the same time. 22 Events Winter Carnival Brings In Cash ik Evcnls 23 Opposite Right: Some peo- ple will do anything for money. Each student is placed with a French family. The Americans leave for France in early Feb- ruary and are there for three weeks. The students begin their travel with a four day stay in Paris. Then it is off to Caen by train to meet the French fam- ilies they will live with. While in Caen, the Americans attend high school with their host stu- dents. During April the French students come to America and spend three days in New York City before coming to Worth- ington. Many activities along with visits to local points of in- terest are planned. Among all of those participating this year, the opinion was unanimous; the Worthington-Caen exchange had been a great success once again. Seniors, Ju- niors, and Sophomores who have received a 3.5 accumula- tive grade point for 3, 5, or 7 semesters respectively, were in- vited to attend the Honor’s Banquet. The banquet was comprised of special guests, parents, and honored students. Dinner was served in the One Union Ball- room. The guest speaker, Lou Briggs entertained parents, ad- ministrators, and students on what the future holds. The banquet ended with the presen- tation of keys. This year's fall festivi- ties centered around the Ger- man theme of an Oktoberfest. What a perfect way to cele- brate the fall festivities. It started with the traditional pep rally which featured the bon- fire. Then came the pre-game fun of floats and spirited mu- sic. The senior float took first place while the WHS march- ing band provided peppy mu- sic. Even though the football game did not go as well as ex- pected, the Worthington spirit was ever present. Kathy Junk was named Homecoming Queen and was backed by her court: Janine Meadors, Libby Harding, Tina Garbin, and Amy Peery. The dance Saturday night ended the week of celebration and fall fun. Events 29 The 1983 Junior-Senior prom was held at the Aladdin Temple Shrine on May 28, 1983. This year’s junior class raised over $5000 for the annu- al event. “Two tickets to Paradise” was the theme of the prom. The tropical decor consisted of palm fronds, tropical flowers, and palm fern rope. Featured was an extremely elaborate dessert buffet consisting of pies, cakes, cookies, and mousses. The bands was The Majes- ties. They played all different types of music in order to please everyone. The hard work of prom chairman Jane Hobart, and committee leaders Deanne Sunday, Tammi Jones, Beth Cherwinski, along with the rest of the prom commit- tee, have helped to make this year's prom a night to remem- ber for all. 30 Events Two Tickets To Paradise Opposite Left: Janie Meadors and Tim Meeks dance the night away. The student council of WHS pro- vides democracy within the school. They are the govern- ment of representatives for the student body. Sponsoring dances, informing students of the concerns of the administra- tion, and reconstructing rules and regulations for the better of all considered are just a few of the many activities and goals of student council. They are the structural bond between students and the administra- tion. A 12-2-0 record in the OCC was good enough to win the league title, a feat pre- viously unaccomplished in the nine year history of softball at WHS. The team’s season was filled with adversity. The major problem the Cards had was finding a field suitable to play on. Due to all the rain during the season, the Flats became quite flooded. Occasionally, the team had to do their own groundskcep- ing. Once they found a field, the Cards winning machine be- came hard to stop. They had a ten game winning streak at one point, went to the third round of the tournament before being defeated, and finished the sea- son with an overall record of 15-4-0. She has been at the high school for 22 years and has held this position for the last thirteen years. Miss. Mrs. Grube moved to Worthington from North Canton, Ohio, where she was a secretary at the North Canton High School. When asked why she chose our school, Mrs. Grube said that everyone she had talked to had told her that Worthington has great schools. The main reason that Mrs. Grube chose to work as a high school secretary again is that she loves being near kids in general and more particularly, teenagers. We all come in contact with the school sec- retaries and all of us in East are glad that Mrs. Grube has joined up with us. She is one of the many who deserves a round of applause. Dru Alexander is certainly no exception, for she has been a secretary in the West Unit office for 13 years and loves it. She feels that what has kept her here for so long is the fact that WHS is filled with fantastic students. The most important thing to her is to try to welcome everyone into the West Unit office with a friendly smile and a big, “Hi, what can I do for you?” Personally, Mrs. Alexander finds much satisfaction when a student refers to her as “mom” or greets her as they would their best friend. The Worthington school board feels that students should learn better writing skills. As a result, a new course will be facing the entire class of 1986 called English II. This will be a one year course. While the school board feels that this course will be beneficial to the sophomores, many others feel that this may not be the case. Many believe that it is more beneficial to the students to be exposed to more than one teacher because each teacher stresses different areas. Worth- ington High School has known this fact for many years and has done everything in its power to make foreign language available to its students. At the current time, students here at Worthington can take French, Spanish, Russian, Ger- man, and Latin. According to several of the foreign language teachers, enrol- ment is increasing greatly. School guid- ance counselors also agree that foreign language is a good idea for most stu- dents because more and more colleges across the nation are asking that stu- dents have had at least two years of a language before entrance. Another im- portant reason for foreign language is understanding the culture and view- points of other peoples. Worthington High School is also one of the few high schools in this area that can boast of a foreign exchange program for those students taking French. The exchange is of course with a city in France. For those of you who haven’t taken any for- eign language, you might just want to think about it. omatics Jennifer Young. Worthington High School is now one of the many schools throughout the state of Ohio with a senior placement math course. During the fall all Juniors take the OSU placement test. Upon looking at the scores, those who it ap- pears may have to take remedial math at OSU are recommended to take this one year course as a Senior. The idea is to do the remedial work as a Senior rather than have to pay to take remedi- al courses with no credit in college. The class is like Algebra II, but it has been stressed that this class is not a review. The class does quite a bit of homework, but TI-30 calculators are used which cut down on time. The ideas of these courses are to provide students with the great opportunity to learn about their natural environment through direct field exper- iences; to provide the structure for de- veloping an intensive, field study pro- gram with competent leadership; and to meet others. The first trip goes North- west and students will visit such places as the Rocky Mountain National Park, Teton National Park and Yellowstone. The Southwest trip is conducted every other year and some of the places vis- ited are Colorado and the Grand Can- yon. All students live in tents and cook their food on both trips. One lone man, Mr. Walter, who teaches U.S. History and Government, has put himself out on a limb, open to ridicule, because he has a basic history and government test which all his students must pass if they want full credit for his course. It should be noted that all Juniors must take this course and receive a full credit. Stu- dents have three tries to earn at least 70 percent on this test. The test questions are exactly the same each time. When asked why he gives the test, Mr. Walter gave several reasons. Kids can actually see their growth. It lets the teachers know if ideas are coming across and he wants to be sure that all of his students leave high school with a basic under- standing of U.S. History and Govern- ment. If this basic understanding can't be shown, then the student must retake either four weeks of summer school or one semester of his Senior year to re- ceive the other half credit to graduate. When one reflects upon the high school years, there are some memories of the fresh- man, sophomore and junior years but it is the senior year which will stand out as the most memorable. Just as the cliche says, “The best always comes last! The Seniors of “’83 — the Class to be” proved that they were the class with spirit, tradition, and distinc- tion. With much enthusiasm and dedication, the Seniors built the 1982 Homecoming float which won first place. The pro- ject was a class effort, and it showed the growing potential of the ’83 Seniors as number one. The Class of 83 was a class teeming with spirit. Not only did they outnumber the freshmen, sophomores, and ju- niors in spirit-links, but they also out cheered them at pep rallies and football games. Because the Seniors strictly abide by tradition, they made sure each Worthington High School ritual was observed. Senior cut day and the inevita- ble plague of Scnioritis natu- rally followed. On the 83rd day before graduation, the Seniors celebrated with a class count- down dinner. Being a Senior brought with it many honorary privileges and distinctions. Although the Senior Hallway had been an- ulled for the Class of ’82, the Class of '83 brought it back. Having a Senior section in the halls, cafeteria, and football stands was just one of the ad- vantages of being a Senior. In addition. Prom, which was the ultimate dance of the year, was a special time for the gradu- ation Class of ’83. In retrospect, no words can sufficiently describe the excite- ment and anticipation felt dur- ing the Senior Year of ’83. The fun time and the laughter will always best be relived in pic- tures and memories.
