All of Worthington had a taste of the “Big Apple when it made the transformation from a simple, mid- American high school to a bustling, complex city. The miraculous change of the usually quiet, serene track that surrounds the football field turned it a Fifth Avenue on which Worthington held its very own Macy’s Parade’’. The numerous floats, particularly those made by the Sophomores and Freshmen classes, brought countless “oohs and aahs’’ from the ever im- pressed crowd. The crowd was equally impressed when the mighty Cardinals proudly protected their turf by defeating the hoods from Westland, 28-17. Not a piece of New York was over- looked. Tessa Vaccaro joined that ever so famous symbol of New York city — the Statue of Liberty, when she was crowned this year’s Home- coming Queen. Tessa proudly pre- sided over the dance which changed the gym into a wild and crowded Time Square. The music of the Country Sunshine Band kept everyone danc- ing and proved that Worthington, too could be considered a city that never sleeps. Whether the dance was followed by a casual stroll through “Central Park” or a hurried hailing of a taxi, the same thoughts were going through the minds of everyone: I'm leaving to- night. I’ll make a brand new start of it — New York. New York!!”. JRD TOP: Tessa Vaccaro. MIDDLE: Glenn Alban and Judd Betts on the war path. Events 15 Maior in what' 16 Events More For Less Two years ago Worthington High School set a precedent in college awareness: The College Fair. It was designed by Mrs. Stukenberg to help students from Worthington and other schools around Colum- bus in their post-high school deci- sions. To better involve other schools, the College Fair will be held at one of four high schools every year and will return to Worth- ington every fourth year. Participat- ing schools include Westland, Up- per Arlington, and Dublin. The lat- ter will host the Fair next year. It should also be noted that Watter- son and Worthington Christain help support the Fair through donations. The rotation of the location only accounts for a part of what makes the College Fair unique. Most events that host colleges for re- cruiting purposes charge astro- nomical fees to participate. This limits the number of colleges that are able to attend. The Worthing- ton Activity Club felt they could at- track a wider variety of Colleges and Universities by charging only a small fee to cover mailing ex- penses. This makes the College Fair one of the few places a Col- lege, University, or the Armed Forces may recruit without making a dent in their budget. The final re- sult is that more options are made known to Worthington students and those in surrounding areas. LLL Imagine this situation. It is a typical Tuesday night dinner with the fam- ily. Half way through the meal Dad casually inquires of your plans after graduation. You choke then pause before answering. Thinking to your- self, “It’s been three whole weeks since he last brought it up. Why am I surprised”, you take a deep breath. Before getting the chance to answer, Dad puts in a word about his alma mater. Finally having the opportunity to answer, you bravely look across the table and say, “Well ... I really haven’t given it much thought. The Worthington Activity Club feared this was a common answer to those ever so important questions about your future. The Activity Club, along with the Worthington High School guidance counselors spon- sored the second annual College Fair. Attending this year’s Fair were close to 5,000 inquisitive students and par- ents. They came not only from Worth- ington, but surrounding areas too. 130 Colleges from as far west as Colorado sent representatives to an- swer questions and talk in general about college. This year’s College Fair offered much more than the opportunity to talk with college representatives. Spokesmen from the Armed Forces were available to inform students of the options offered in their fields. Scholarship Financial Aid sessions were held to brief all that were inter- ested in the whos, whats, and hows of financial assistance. One-to-one counseling helped students figure out how it all applied to them. Most of those who attended found that the Fair helped to ease some of the fears and anxieties provoked by the What am I going to do after high school?” dilemma. Events 17 18 How will things turn out for a zany scatter-brained woman who lives by the philosophy that “Life is a banquet to be enjoyed by all”? The answer was found in this year’s Fall Play, “Auntie Marne”, written by Robert E. Lee and Jerome Lawrence. The play opens with the news that Marne Dennis (J. Hollander) has just been named the guardian of her ten year old nephew, Patrick (B. Block). After meeting some of Marne’s friends like Vera Charles (L. Tipshus), Pa- trick’s trustee, Mr. Babcock (B. Brown), decides it would be best to send Patrick to a private school. Al- though she is very upset over this matter, Marne doesn’t let it spoil her chance of enjoying life. Following Marne from one bizarre happening to the next are her loyal servants, Ito (T. Lau) and Norah (H. Thompson). During the course of the play they see Marne through three very unique boyfriends. Early in the show Marne discovers that Lindsay Woolsey (J. Hickman) is just reasonable and moves on to big- ger and better things like Beauregard Jackson Pickett Burnside (T. St. Pierre) who takes her away to the deep south. Passing the inspection of Mother Burnside (T. Garvin) and the obstacles presented by Sally Cato Mac Dougal (T. Agnew), Marne be- comes Mrs. Beauregard Burnside. After a tragic accident, Marne is left a widow. Returning home Marne decides to try her hand at writing a novel of her past adventures. Helping with this new project is her new found poetic beau, Brian O’Bannion (D. Nelson), who has captured the attention of Marne’s secretary, Agnes Gooch (C. Meese). Marne’s problems do not end there. Patrick (B. Brown) has returned home to tell Marne of his engagement plans with Gloria Upson (C. Wilson). Marne disapproves and plans a scheme to end the relationship by embarassing Mr. and Mrs. Upson (R. Szulewski and M. Shutter). Patrick realizes that he has been disolutioned and soon falls for the pretty decorator, Pegeen Ryan (J. Gahman). This eccentric play not only dis- plays the talent of the actors and ac- tresses, but the knowledge and skill of the technical crews and directors. Much thanks should go to Mrs. Hop- ton, Chris Lau, Mr. Scowden, and Miss Hottenroth for all of their extra time and effort that made this produc- tion the success that it was. Jennifer Kamon. and Kevin Delaney display their costumes. I thought this was the Christmas Formal. The waves were breaking and so was tradition as hundreds of Worthington students traded their usual suits and heels for birdwells and flip flops and headed for the beach instead of the gymnasium. Since previous Holiday dances re- sulted in poor attendance and just general apathy, Student council de- cided that there was definately a need for changes. What they came up with was met with much enthusiasm and was an instant success — a beach party in December! Students came to the party loaded with suntan lotion and beach towels. They were ready and expecting a good time. All expectations were met as the ballads of Don Ho and the magical music of the Beach Boys traveled up and down the beach and kept everyone dancing. By the end of the wild party, most beachgoers had either be-bopped their flip flops off or were burned to a crisp, but one and all agreed that it was a great time! JRD Events 21 The Jury Finds In Favor Of Right: I would like order in this courtroom. These words were the culmina- tion of the (98) Fall Mock Trails, a great tradition at Worthington High School. The students of the Per- sonal Law classes heard an actual civil case in front of a full auditorium as Shirley Nault proudly looked on. The trails provided exciting entertain- ment for the school and valuable ex- perience for the participants in han- dling themselves in a pressure packed courtroom. The members of the classes re- ceived their cases only days before they had to present them. Hours upon hours were spent digging through the books in the OSU Law Library so that all would be thoroughly prepared. All of the hard work payed off, for they were able to preform admirably be- fore mant noted attorneys and digni- taries from the community. These tri- als were both rewarding and educat- ing to the Law classes and will no doubt be remembered for a long time to come. JJK Top: 'noted attorneys and dignitaries from the community.' Left: The Franklin County Court of Common Pleas will now hear civil case 436. Right: Just one little white lie?” 22 Events Council prepares for a rough day in court. Along standing tradition at Worthington High School has been the Sadie Hawkins dance held on Valentine's day. It provides an op- portunity for the girls to ask out the guys that they’ve had their eye on. The week before the dance the courting begins with the nomination of the King and his court. Through out the week the nominees campaign for money donations and the guy with the most amount of money wins his place on the court. All donations are then given to the American Heart Associ- ation. The carnation sale, also a tradition at WHS, brought the warmth of friendship, the reasurance of love, and the mystery of a secret admirer to the girls as well as the guys. The week of courting payed off, for this year’s dance brought a record breaking crowd who never stopped dancing even when the band quit playing.LLL Events 23 Harold and Marianne at the lover’s bridge The thunder of rolling drums and the glitter of crashing cymbals all came to Worthington High school with the performance of Meredith Will- son's The Music Man, which was preformed by the WHS music depart- ment. The story revolves around a sales- man, Harold Hill (D. Brown), and his efforts to swindle the River City citi- zens out of their hard earned money. Marion Paroo (L. Lemon) and Mayor Shinn (T. St. Pierre) attempt to thwart his plan. Instead of destroying Harold Hill, Marion falls in love with him. For the first time Harold discovers that he has got his foot stuck in the door” and fallen in love, too. Harold brings much happiness to the small Iowa town with his plans for the “boy’s band”; however, when Charlie Cowell (N. Senhauser) exposes his scheme the happiness is close to ruined. The people of River City realize that the happiness that Harold brought to the town was worth the money they lost, and the band played on. The Music Man was a trimph and drew a larger crowd than last year’s operetta. Part of the operetta's suc- cess during the past 20 years is due to Elaine Hottenroth’s help as drama director. Her involvement has helped make the operetta what it is today. Thanks is also owed to Joel Haney, Bronwynn Hopton, and James Scow- den for the many hours of work they spent producing this play. Presenting The Music Man Events 25 Winter Carnival From “Our Ice Cream Has No Bones to Goldfish Swallowing, the 1982 Winter Carnival was an over- whelming success. On February 20th over 17 clubs and organizations set up in the gym for the annual Winter Carnival spon- sored by student council. A week of visits to elementary schools by Senior “clowns paid off. Many young stu- dents came to play games and enjoy the delicious food the clubs had pre- pared. A new feature of the carnival was the cafe where parents and other weary carnival visitors could rest and enjoy their snacks. The cake walk sponsored by Wri- terspatch was one of the most popu- lar events this year. Their luscious baked goods attracted many patrons and they ended up with the largest profit of all groups. Hopefully, the Winter Carnival will continue to be an annual event that all can enjoy! MM 26 Events Life is like a Rubic’s Cube. The Honored Annually the Academic Honors banquet is held to recognize outstanding students of Worthington High School. Attending this year's banquet were over three hundred key recipients. Keys are given to students who have maintained a 3.5 for three, five, or seven consecutive semesters. Bronze keys are given to sopho- mores, silver keys go to the juniors, and seniors receive gold keys. The guest speaker of the twenty- second annual Academic Honors Banquet made a ‘brief presentation on “life as a Rubic’s Cube”. He left all present with a sense of accomplish- ment and a feeling of success. LLL “Oh, no! My slip is showing. Only Gold will do. Look! Alan Funt. Events 27 Worthington Talent After many weeks of practicing in garages, basements, and living rooms, the big day arrived. The 1982 Talent Show gathered together more than two dozen people who wanted to display their talents. Due to the multitudes and diversities of the acts, the show was divided into two parts. The first part was composed of non-rock acts. Bill Stillwell, dressed as a policeman, played the theme to Hill Street Blues. Geoff Gee played an ac- companiment to a duet sung by two girls. The only rock set in this part was the band Septor. They performed a melody of songs. The second part marked the un- leashing of six rock bands. Among the groups were Venture, Torn Cur- tain, Xanthus, and the Generics. The last set was performed by Fusion. They received a tumultuous applause from the already rowdy crowd. A lot of time and effort went into the production of the Talent Show and thanks is given to all involved, espe- cially Mr. Fuller. TDM Smokey and Neal 28 Events Laurie Lemon Ready, Steady, Go Worthington High School ex- perienced an enchanted evening when this year’s Children's play, Ready, Steady, Go” was per- formed. As the play opens five dolls, a mounties, a spider, a horse and a bear are enjoying a somewhat peace- ful life. Their enjoyable life is disturbed when three rats manipulate the dolls to give them the power over the attic. The mountie, Ready Steady, man- ages to fight back and rescue the dolls with his complicated plan. In the mean time he finds his true love, Miss Mumbles, and the others watch on as they fall in love. All of the parts were double cast so that all of the elementary schools could see the play. Much gratitude is owed to Bronwyn Hopton, James Scowden, and Chris Lau. These stu- dents were elected by their teachers. An eligibility list was posted showing all juniors and seniors who have met the scholarship requirements for N.H.S. Teachers were then able to asess each eligible student on the ba- sis of leadership, character, and ser- vice. After the teachers have cast their votes the nominees are tapped on the Tapping ceremony. Formal in- vitations are then sent out for the In- duction ceremony. The night of the ceremony each of the four officers gives a speech on the different aspects of N.H.S. Each of the nominees are called up on stage and asked to sign the official register. The nominees are then formal mem- bers of the N.H.S. KJM Susan Ford and NHS co-advisor, Mrs. Larson. Mr. Rousculp. NHS co-advisor. Events 31 Escape To The Orient The seemingly calm night of May 8, caused a massive migration to the East, as students escapted to the Orient for this year’s prom activi- ties. Every year the Junior class slaves, toils, and puts in countless agonizing hours to produce the dance of all dances — the Junior-Senior Prom. Escape to the Orient , this year’s theme truly was quite an experience since the persistent Junior class suc- ceeded in holding the prom at the lux- urious Hyatt Regency Ballroom. The elegance and convenience of near by restaurants plus available night coach rides of the Hyatt Regen- cy made this a prom — Utopia. For the third time in the last four years, the Diamond Brother's Band put on an excellent performance as they provided the music that kept ev- eryone dancing. The fortune cookies all read — “a good time for all”, and it definately was a good time. The Junior class truly succeeded in making this year’s prom the dance of all dances. Cardinal Club Cardinal Club Cardinal Club Cardinal Cli Cardinal Club was created to promote spirit, enthusiasm, and support for the Worthington Football Team, The 1981-82 season was fantastic and the near 75-member Cardinal Club was equally great in lending their time, effort and support. This was exhibited by the making of locker signs every week, decoration of the team locker room, hall signs, organization of pep rallies, not to mention the long involved task of putting together “Spirit Boxes” The Club as a whole also participated in various other activities and fund raisers. This year Cardinal Club sold ribbons and shakers at main campus, Kilbourne, and even at the middle schools. The profits from these sales helped finance the annual team dinner in which enough fried chicken was purchased to feed the entire team, coaches, and club members after a football practice. The last and probably most important activity was the organization of Parents Night which was held at the last home football game. Its purpose was to honor the parents' patience and support throughout the season, The 1981 Football Season was indeed one of the best seen in years and the participation and accomplishments of Cardinal Club rated just as high. 40 Clubs Boys Soccer players were supported well this year. Promoting interest in soccer and supporting the players were the main purpose of the club. The girls ran the concession stand and were ball girls during the games aside from the usual locker signs and spirit boxes. The guys had a soccer marathon to raise money for the team. This supplemented the bake sales held by the girls. The officers were: Kathy Blackford (Pres.), Louise Wigney (Tres.), and Karen Ferguson (Sec.) Though wrestling may be one of those off beat sports that may go unnoticed by some of the regular sports fans, it is well known by the members of the WHS Wrestling Club. The club was organized to do the stats for the tournaments and locker signs to support the players. They raised money for themselves by selling cleaners and by parent’s donations. They also raised money for the heart fund by Kinder Key caroling at Christmas. The leading supporters were: Paula Scheaf (Pres.), Karen Holtz (V. Although swim club was not involved in any major fundraisers, several bake sales were conducted, and the club was also supported by dues. This year's president was Leanne Lemerich, vice- president — Kelly Cellar, secretary treasurer — Karen Ollila. Next years president will be Karen Ollila, vice-president — Leanne Lemerich, secretary treasurer — Lisa Hampshire. The girls track club was alive and working well this year. During boy’s home track meets, they could be found at the track doing their various tasks: raking sand at the long jump; measuring the bar at the high jump; playing with stop watches at the finish line; and sounding sexy over the PA. Their efforts were appreciated by the staff of coaches and the entire team. 42 Clubs The Worthington Girl’s Lacrosse Club, 50 strong, had a very successful season in fund raising and in their matches. Combining the monies made through the concession stand, their “Fish Pond” booth at the Winter Carnival, and the individual selling of coupon books — they were able to raise over $1500. Basketball Club — Baseball Club — Basketball Club — Baseball — Club WHS Basketball Club works long and hard to make basketball season a success. The little sis' work all year round from car washes in spring to selling programs at football games in the fall, to counting buckets at the shoot- a-thon in mid December. The girls each chose one player who will be their big brother for the season. The girls make locker signs, bake cakes, and decorate rooms for their players. The club members are responsible for annual dues and helping at fund raisers such as the pizza sale in January. The club does a lot of work which the parents club, the coaches and most importantly the players are thankful for. Whistles, spirit boxes, locker signs, crowded bleachers are all a big part of the Cardinal Baseball Club. The Baseball club was designed to support the Varsity and Junior Varsity Baseball Teams, and to promote Baseball in our high school. The club begins working early in October with fund raising — pizza and bake sales, which support our team during the season and Sponser the end of the season banquet. Gymnastics Club — Tennis Club — Gymnastics Club — T Looking back at the Boy’s Tennis team season, the tennis club members remember many things: the late hours spent at making locker signs, cheering at matches with 30 0 weather, and trying to keep up with the stat sheets. However, it was well worth it for all the fun times and memories that were shared. This was the first year for WHS to have a tennis club. It was formed by a group of girls interested in supporting the team. The members attended matches, made locker signs, and kept stats. This has been a very successful club and hopefully it will be more so in the years to come. The Gymnastics Club of 1982 was a great success. After having lost three quarters of it’s members to the graduating class of '81, there was plenty of recruiting to be done. President Kim Epstein, Vice President Suzy Baker, Secretary Gigi Pecek, and Treasurer Tara Garvin all worked hard to make up the largest club that there has been these past four years. Projects included bake sales, a Flipathon, and selling Christmas tree ornaments. Because of this year's club, the gymnasts received much more publicity than previous years. This was accomplished by the gymnasts performing at half-time during a basketball game and having a pep rally to recognize them. The girls ran all the home meets, provided locker signs, went to the away meets for Regional and State, hosted a club and team party, and organized a banquet at the end of the season at the La Scala Restaurant. The confrontation of the fighting Juniors and Seniors was well prepared for. Practices started in early October as the girls prepared for Battle. Bruises and even broken bones were felt but the game activities were well worth the effort. Nearly everyone was aware of the excitement felt by players and enthusiasts the day of the game. Unfortunately some activities were felt to be too destructive by the school authorities. Never the less, the day was enjoyed by all. The game itself was exciting to the players but maybe a little less so to supporting spectators. The seniors finally pulled off a 28-8 win. Though the defeat was not close, the Juniors achieved the honor of being the only team ever to have scored against a Senior team. All the glory of cheerleading is much to be admired but hard work is an essential element for preparation. The girls attended a summer clinic for three days from 9:00-2:00. This served as a workshop to get them ready for the on- coming season. All appreciated how nice the girls looked in their new uniforms. They were paid for by a Pizza Sale fund raiser. The girls are guided this year by a new advisor, Sandy Weaver. According to Captain Jenni DeBord, she did great this season. This definatly paid off at the O.S.U. Clinic where our own WHS cheerleaders took first vs. all of Ohio. When April comes, it will be sad for the girls to see new faces taking their spots for the next year. It was an enjoyable experience for all. The girls were lead by JV co- captain Kim Kerscher, captain Wendy Kalinowski, Varsity Co- captain Shannon Timperman, and captain Jenni Debord. Clubs 53 Behind our football team stands a crowd of enthusiasts, devoted to their music and our team cause. Their music can be heard ringing through the campus two weeks before school is in session at 7:30 A.M. and after school until 4:45 P.M. The time that some students take for granted is well spent as the performances show. If you listen carefully, the sounds of our bands can be into the winter and spring. Concert band consists of Freshmen and Sophomores and meets 2nd period. Symphonic band consists of Juniors and Seniors and meets 3rd period. The bands have two concerts in the winter and the spring. Some of the students also participate in Stage band which plays for the school and at other invitational performances. Band Boosters is a supporting group of parents who raise money for the bands. They raise money for instruments on Tag Day this past fall. Members of the band collected money for which they gave a tag of recognition to the donor. The money which is raised also helps support the annual trip to “Kings Island . The members of our band truly involve their entire lives with music and all the activities that surround the club. The winter concert included a solo on the bass by Steve Ullery. The spring concert included a viola solo by Rob Roth and a piano concerto by Harold Picken. Both Concerts, held in the Worthington High School auditorium, proved that even among high schoolers, classical music lived on. Many of the members also participated in the pit orchestra for the musical, “The Music Man.” These unseen performers are better known as Haney’s Heroes. These words, which translate respectively into yes , “please , and excuse me” were made familar to many Worthington students during the weeks of April 5-8 and April 12-16. During this period, Worthington experienced a Normandy invasion” of its own as French exchange students from Caen, Normandy arrived to spend two fun-filled weeks of living and learning in the homes of Mr. Robert Ballinger's French IV class. The exchange students, who attend Mal-Herbe (Bad Grass) High School in Caen, made the annual trip on April 2, under the leadership of Madame Danielle Le Quere. The American French IV students had earlier made the trip to Caen during the last three weeks in February. Everyone involved agreed that the exchange was a wonderful and exciting experience. Mr. Ballinger, organizer of the program, was very supportive of it. ... Language is the most important thing (since) language is part of culture, (and) culture is a part of people. He also observed that the subtle details which make each culture different were contacted by both Americans and French during the exchange and contributed to its importance. This year Mrs. Larson led the WHS students to Caen for the exchange. French Club — German Club — French Club — German Club FRENCH CLUB (ABOVE): Rebbecca Copeland. Allison Gordley. Lori Black. Two classes are conducted for this purpose: Journalism production and News-Writing and Reporting. Each class is worth Vi a credit towards graduation. As each semester begins, a new staff takes over and the editors and managers are chosen by teacher and advisor, J.R. Mansfield. One of the Most difficult jobs is that of the editor-in-chief, who lays out the entire magazine, edits, proofreads, sets deadlines and guidelines and in general, doles out duties. However, they, like all other editors, managers and reporters, must write stories for the magazine. Grades are based upon how well one writes, how much one writes, the attitude towards the work, and how much time outside of school is spent working on the Phoenix. If we had our chance, each member would surely enjoy expressing our graditude toward all who helped make our individual jobs a little easier. The most important aspect of the NHS is the tutoring program. Students in the NHS sign up at the beginning of each year to provide tutoring assistance to students needing help. This year members of the NHS went Christmas Caroling to area retirement homes. Besides tutoring and Caroling, the NHS’s largest activity is the election and induction of members. Each year approximately 10% of the Junior Class and 5% of the Senior Class is elected into the NHS by the basis of character, leadership, and service. Clubs 73 Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespia Why is it that annually, one day in May, at least fifteen people are willing to make fools of themselves by wearing costumes and doing minute-long monologues at the flash of a yellow card? This rite is commonly known as Thespian Initiation. The yellow, International Thespian Society Membership Card is their goal. In order to be privileged enough to go through this torture, a person must have earned at least 10 Thespian points — the equivalent of approximately 100 hours of work, either backstage, props, costumes, make-up, stage crew, lights, or set construction; or on stage; acting or student directing. Activities that Thespians participate in during the year include the Fall play and attending the State Thespian Conference, held annually at the sponsoring high school. Conference usually takes place in April over one weekend and features skits by other high school Thespian troupes as well as various acting, make-up, and technical workshops. The largest task that WHS Thespians sponsor, is the Spring Children's Play. Although it usually does not last longer than an hour, the 5 Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespians Thespiar show takes more time to coordinate than a regular production. Not only must sets and lights be designed for the show, but they must be created simply enough for the cast to easily take it down to be moved a total of eight times. The children’s play tours all seven elementary school’s giving a total of 15 performances plus three additional public performances. (For those of you who are counting, that is 18 shows.) Even though the children’s play may be very demanding, the cast and crews usually find the time and energy after the final performance at the last elementary school to relax by having a picnic at Highbanks and reflecting back on past shows and experiences. This year’s hard work is behind us now. The sets for the shows have been struck and the curtains slowly shut on these as another WHS Thespian production season comes to an end. Through all of the lack of sleep, sweat, and worry we have done our best to live up to our motto: Act well your part, there all the honor lies. Clubs 75 Wr i Row 1: Brenda Monsees, Vreneli Leininger. Sports 85 Kicks For the seniors of 1982, the last four years will be remembered as quite an eventful high school soc- cer experience, this year offered no exception. Welcoming the third coach of their soccer history, the girls eagerly anticipated the season ahead of them. John Cutbush, a na- tive of London, England, was in America teaching the Goal Soccer Camps, and decided to coach for Worthington. Ron Acuma, studying at Ohio State University, offered to coach the Junior Varsity team. As the season progressed, Coach Cutbush received an offer to play for the M.I.S.L. Wtchita Wings, an indoor soccer team. With some help from Herb Hoffenbeck, Ron Acuma was left to finish off the 8-3 season. Though disappointed that the Worthington Invitational was cancelled, the girls exhibited tre- mendous effort and played every game to the best of their ability. Four of the seven Varsity seniors were awarded their fourth varsity letter, something quite uncommon. 11 2 4 3 1 6 2 4 13 6 ' 5 3 THEY 0 vood hmont a Centerville Yellow Springs Princeton Centerville Findlay Alter Dayton Yellow Springs Findlay 1 Lakota Front Row: Valerie Holmes, Ruth Jones, Lisa McBride, Linda Byers. HIKE The 1981 football team rolled through one of the state's toughest grid schedules enroute to a highly commendable 8-2 sea- son. The schedule included eight oppo- nents who were at some point in the season rated in Central Ohio's top ten. The Cards finished the year rated fifth, according to the final Columbua Dispatch poll. All-district linebacker, and co-captain Dan Jurkowitz paced the Cardinal defense, setting a new school record for tackles. Da- vid Wagner also received all-district honors, and Tim Meeks was named all-OCC defen- sive guard. Quarterback and co-captain Judd Betts’ brilliant passing and inspired leadership helped the offense, including all- OCC tackle Zack Napier and honorable mention tight end Billy Miles, move the ball when it really counted. The student body showed great support for the gridders this year, especially a group of black-clad seniors, affectionately known as “The C.P.’ and the newly formed T.W.K.B. 88 Sports Betts takes the kickoff. With growing enthusiasm for the program, Worthington's field hock- ey team of thirty-five strong sur- passed their own expectations for the season. Although their record was not outstanding, when tourna- ment play began, they looked like champions. The best individual record on the team was 9-2, held by Senior Greg Brooks who played first and second team doubles. The Team was balanced with five seniors, four Juniors, three Sophomores, and four Fresh- men. Even though there are five seniors leaving, “it shouldn't hurt the team so bad if the Freshmen work hard and improve, states Senior Greg Brooks. Coach Fuller is also emphatic in stating that the underclass- men will carry the team in '83. The Seniors leaving the team are Greg Brooks No. 1 singles player, John Scott, Chris Parker, Mark Susi and Glen Hagler. 98 Sports Greg Brooks John Scott Smash With a swing, lob, and ace, the Worthington tennis team ended an- other smashing season. Kristen Peterson, Korey Kersher, Michele Stephenitch, Anne Fisher, Mary LaFontaine, and Lynn Hillock won sectionals, and qualified to advance to district competition. At districts, Kristen Peterson displayed her skills by tak- ing second place, and Michele Ste- phenitch doubled up with Korey Kersher to receive third place. All three players qualified to compete at state. Triumphantly, Kristen Pe- terson finished third and the dou- bles team Michele Stephenitch and Korey Kersher took fourth. The boys took the district title with an exceptional score of 132.55. There was much concern among the team after los- ing four strong Seniors from the Class of '81. But the new coach, Marc Small, a Worthington gra- duate, turned out quite an out- standing team. This year’s team centered around Seniors Bill Klunk, Matt Hower, Dave Bulford, and captain Dave Kinnick. Junior, Tim Wilson contributed much to the team, in- cluding a new WHS vaulting record. The team proved their superior balance by placing ex- tremely high in the strenuous Class II districts, and by losing only one league meet. Also, Junior Khrista Ford represented the lady cards at the state meet on beam. For the first half of the season, the girls were lucky enough to have the contributions of Heather Thom- as, an outstanding Freshman gym- nast. According to Cindy Barnes, Heather is most definitely Olympic material. She had to leave the team in midseason, however, for intense, individual instruction with a private coach. ' Splash Swimming — that is one word which is a standard of excellence here at Worthington. It demands getting up at 5:00 a.m. for a prac- tice at 5:30 plus another practice after school — but the girls swim team met these demands and struggles. Led by captains Lisa Hampshire, Beth Baur, Sue Mil- burn, and Kelli Callar the girls end- ed up with only one loss in the regu- lar dual meet season (a large part of the team was away at an AAU meet). They went on to win dis- tricts and place fourth team wise at the state competition with 11 girls qualifying. The girls were also suc- cessful in breaking four school re- cords. These four records broken were Kelli Davis in the 500 free, Lisa Hampshire in the 100 fly, Ka- ren Taylor in the 200 I.M., and Jill- Wolfram in the 100 back. Hoeffler James Gooding Sterling Apthorp Elaine Hottenroth Gladys Berry David Howell The Visible Principal When it was learned that former principal Dr. Cavanaugh would not be principal at Worthington High School this year, every- one wondered who would replace him. Stu- dents in the classes of ’82 and '83 were ■ pleased with the choice of John W. Hoeffler. As freshmen these two classes met Mr. Hoeffler when he was principal of Kilbourne. Those who knew him knew that he would make a good principal at the high school. Mr. Hoeffler started his career at Worth- ington as an English teacher at Kilbourne in 1969. He taught for six years including his last year as chairman of the English depart- ment at the main campus. In 1976 he took a job as assistant principal at Lima Shaw- nee. This was his first step into Administra- tion. After one and a half years in Lima he returned to Worthington for three years as principal at Kilbourne. In 1980 Mr. Hoeffler attended Ohio State full time to earn his doctorate degree in Educational Adminis- tration. This is a goal he is still working at, along with his many duties as principal of Worthington High School. Mr. Hoeffler has set many goals for him- self and the school during his first year back. He thinks it is very important that he get close to the students and staff he works with. Mr. Hoeffler's presence in the halls at school, and at extracuricular activities defi- nitely does bring him closer to others at the school. Mr. Hoeffler also feels that parents and the community must become involved with the high school. Everybody involved in the educational process should be able to respect and like each other. It is impor- tant to build close relationships between everyone involved. Mr. Hoeffler. like every principal, wishes to continue improving Worthington’s aca- demic program. He feels that Worthington has an outstanding teaching staff and cur- riculum. Our instructional program includes fine basics plus a wide variety of electives. Mr. Hoeffler feels that students don’t real- ize how much Worthington High School has to offer in terms of its facilities. We tend to take everything we are provided with for granted. School spirit is an important part of any school. Mr. Hoeffler wants to expand school spirit beyond athletics. He wants students to recognize activities such as the forensics team and theatrical productions. Mr. Hoeffler has high standards set for Worthington High School, and is working hard toward a school unified in all aspects. He is extremely dedicated to his job, and cares about the people at Worthington High School. Ori- ginally it was composed of three courses — Bookkeeping. Typing, and Shorthand. Today. Personal Law. Personal Finance. Economics, and Accounting II have been added to the curriculum. Also, a new course at the ninth grade level has been established. This course. Business Educa- tion Preview, is designed to give students a broad sampling of the courses offered at the high school. Another change occurred when electric typewriters were bought for the Personal Typing class. This purchase makes it possible to teach all typing classes with electric typewriters. Through the 1980’s business will be one of the more popular areas for college stu- dents. The Business Department at Worth- ington High School should continue to meet the needs of the students with a broad elective program that not only serves the college bound student, but also the student that plans to use their skills voca- tionally upon graduation from high school. One big challenge is to incorporate the use of the computer into the business curricu- lum. 132 Faculty Rita Marker Lil Messenheimer Alex Pashovich Pam Reeb -n O 7) m 5 Faculty 133 ( X Charles Rousculp Brad Routson Tom Savon Pat Saylor 134 Faculty Gail Gay Wayne Harvey Ingrid Lukas Betty Kincaid Peggy Pyron Nan Wampler Beth Haney Jerri Lawrence Roger Johnson Tom Pollock Cindy Schoenhoff Faculty 135 Q c ■■■ a Q) 3 O CD Grace Brumfield James Ort June Hall Jerry Stephan Robert McCollins Ken Valentine Stephan Starts New Program A new. and much needed. Drug Educa- tion program was begun at Worthington High School this year. Jerry Stephan, for- mer Quest and Health teacher, who had a major part in developing the program, is its coordinator. The program provides help and information for everyone; from the per- son who needs help, all the way down the ladder to each teacher in the district. A network of people keep the program alive by continuing to learn more and more about the kind of help that people may need. For any program to work, there must be cooperation and trust between every- one involved. Mr. Stephan provides an op- portunity for students to discuss their use or other’s use of drugs each Tuesday. The Support Group gives students a chance to talk in confidence about their own use of mood altering substances. These students may be beginning to feel a concern toward their own well-being, but not quite ready to make a commitment to stop. Another group, the Serenity Group. is for those who have decided that they want to do something about their problem. They actu- ally formulate a personally designed plan of action or recovery that resists use of mood altering substances. The final group, the Peer Group.” provides students with an opportunity to discuss the use of drugs by friends or relatives. They talk about how use by other people has and is affecting their life. Although the initial commitment must be made by the student, teachers play an im- portant part in the program. Mr. Stephan has set up a network throughout the district to educate every teacher about chemical involvement. A teacher inservice commit- tee meets with Mr. Stephan to discuss spe- cial concerns and problems, then each member educates a larger group. Many teachers have shown concern by attending various workshops, internships and lec- tures. With their knowledge, teachers are well aware of individuals who may need help. A teacher may refer a student to Mr. Stephan after observing specific habits. The staff is not trying to get users into trouble, but just trying to help. With Mr. Stephan’s guidance, a student may find that he wants help and is willing to make a commitment. Jerry Stephan fills the posi- tion of Drug Education Coordinator well; he is a wonderful person, and he cares about each individual he talks to. Thou- sands of students have passed through the halls of Worthington High School and with them have passed thousands of fads. However, as the students leave the endearing halls of the high school, the fads have vanished with them. Although many fads have gone and new ones have taken their place, many of the fads cannot be forgotten. The 1950’s was a decade of white bucks, blue suade shoes, and duck tailed hair cuts. It was a decade that gave birth to rock and roll, and the decade brought fame to the originators of this new kind of music. It was a time when students did the bunny hop. The girls wore their boyfriend’s letter sweater, poodle skirts, and bobby socks. Cares were light, and the worries of students were seldom. The 1960’s was a time of rapid change. The controversial Vietnam War brought forth many fads of rebellion and resent- ment. Guys wore their hair long and ‘’grunge’’ clothes seemed to be the in” style for everyone. In fact, the entire war movement was a fad in itself. At no other time in the history of America did rebellion against one's own country seem to be the thing to do. However, with the end of the Vietnam War, the fads of rebellion and protest began to fade. The 1970’s seemed to be a new beginning for fads. Fads no longer seemed to be rooted in anger. Students became more care free, and the fads reflected this. A craze of pet rocks (the candy that pops in your mouth) preoccupied the time of the students. Although much of the fashion world turned back to the basic style of the fifties, the seventies had a distinguishing style that uniquely its own. Although only two years old. the 1980’s have brought forth more of a variety of fads than any other decade in history. Fashion has given people the preppy look, the anti-preppy look, and the western style. Fashion has also brought the bazaar look of the Go Go’s complete with metalic headbands, gold mini- skirts. and metalic shoes. The punk rock craze has entered the halls of Worthington High School, and punk hair cuts are crawling out of no where. Many other fads have come to life in the eighties, and will continue to grow as the decade continues. For as long as the walls of Worthington High School stand, fads and crazes will continue to prosper. Students will come and go, and fads will come and go. but the memories of fads that have long since gone will linger on. When you need a winner, Call the Cardinals. We Do Weddings WHRTfllNGTGN.EflEN: PART III For the past three years French IV and V stu- dents at Worthington High School have been given the opportunity to actually test their French skills by living in France. This school ex- change program is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and The Council on International Edu- cational Exchange (CIEE). Under the guidance of a different French teacher each year, approxi- mately 20 Worthington students have travelled to France over the past three years. The stu- dents leave in early February, fly to Paris, where they spend a few days sight-seeing and shop- ping, and then travel north to Caen, French where the remainder of the three-week trip is spent. Caen is a city of about 200,000 inhabi- tants which is located in the northern French province of Normandy. Each of the students live with a family while in Caen. During the stay the student learns to fit in with the French family. In doing so, he or she gets to experience a taste of the French way of life — from French food to a trip to the Alps or the Riviera! The Americans Les families americaines also find out what a French high-school is really like. They can attend and observe classes to find out, for example, what it is like to learn Algebra or Chemistry in another language. A few weeks after the American students re- turn home and have time to re-adjust to their everyday life, the Caen students come to try their hand at living in a different culture. Usually they live with the same students whom they hosted in France. With this American student they attend Worthington High School and discover what it is like to be a teen-ager in the United States. Other activities which help them to experience the “American lifestyle are trips to movies, to a shopping mall, to museums, to historical sites (including a trip to Greenfield Village), to sporting events, and even to a rock concert. Both the French and American students bene- fit greatly from their three week stay in each other's country. Not only do they have the chance to perfect their French and English skills, but they have learned a little more about another culture and another lifestyle. Les visiteurs francais avec M.
