1976 Cardinal Worthington High School Worthington, Ohio Volume XXXV z I 10 12 WINNING seemed impossible for the Cards as the season began but the new coach, Tom Rutan, got the team moving in time to snare a share of the OCC title with a 6-1 league record. Six players from Worthington made the all OCC team at the conclusion of the fall season. The victory over Arlington remained elusive but there’s always next year . . 14 I. Rob Grim hugs the ball. 16 17 MARCHING to a different drummer may be for some people but it’s not for the March- ing Band and the Cardinal Cadettes. These two groups braved long hours of practice and some bad weather to entertain Cardinal fans. The Marching Band, with drum major Joe Lehman, made the music move and no one could kick about the performance of the Drill Team under senior captain, Becky Max- well. I. From locker signs to loud yelling and even pyramid-building, these superfans did a great job of promoting the teams and exciting the crowds. 1. Cardinal Club 2. Do you know this Cardinal fan? Top: Christa Brennan, Caren Nitschke, Gail Harrison. 21 HEADING for victory, the soccer team literally annihilated their opponents en route to an incredible second place in the state. Led by junior captain Seth Crane and seniors Tom Murray and Matt White, who were named to the all-state team, Worthington rolled up a sixteen game streak that died just one long, weary game short of the State Championship. Coach Ed Shay’s boys had the most impressive defense in the state with senior super-goalie Greg Byer recording sixteen shut-outs. 22 3 1. Herb Hoffmannbeck seems to astonish the other players with his ability to get the ball air- borne. 23 FLICKING off opponents, the 1975 2 edition of the field hockey team was unstoppable. Coach Karen Howell’s girls, behind senior captain Theresa O’Connor, ran up a perfect league record and won the first tournament of the fledgling Cen- tral Ohio High School Field Hockey Association. O’Connor and senior super- star Angie Galipault made the all-star team while junior Martha Heim was voted Miss Hockey Homecoming Queen. I. Varsity — Coach Karen Howell, Judy Roback, Rowanne Loos. Diane Priddy. Connie Thompson. 4 25 RACING to a third in the OCC and a tie for second in the district would have thrilled any other team, but the Worthington harriers were none too happy. After having won ten straight OCC and fifteen straight district cham- pionships, thirty year veteran coach Les Eisenhart's boys were disappointed with their record. Dave Chadwell, the out- standing runner who led the team and placed eighteenth at the state, is the lone graduating senior, while the rest of the young team returns to regain their dominance of the sport. Dave ChadwelPs face exempli- fies the physical pain of endurance. 26 SPLASHING into the record books. Miss Janet Vogt’s girls’ swim team proved them- selves unexcelled in the state. Led by sopho- mores Laura (Foxy) Fox and Tammy Knerr, and sophomore diver Beth Gerard, the incredi- bly young team went 5-0 and then grabbed first from a field of twenty-two teams at the state invitational. This is the third straight such victory for the Cardinals and their coach has high hopes for another great season to come. 1. JAWS!! 2. Cindy Glick, Pam Power. 27 I DRIVING opponents crazy became a habit for coach Dave Riegel’s golf team. They finished an impressive 16-2 overall with an 8-1 championship in the OCC. Individual standings in the OCC looked like a Worthington team list with senior Rick Borg first, junior Scott Mc- Dannold third, and senior Ken Platta fourth. 1. JV — Jeff Ison, Craig Reynolds, Mike DePaso, Craig Boiler, coach Eric Freece. 29 1 SMASHING victories were the order of the year as Neil Walter’s girls dazzled the league with superior net play. With junior captain Betsy Gast and lone senior and “num- ber one woman” Carole Howe leading the doubles, the team finished 9-2 overall. Under first year coach Jennifer Elin and seniors Kate Wilson and Denny Bohon, the girls fought their way to a 12-3 season and the second place ranking in the area before an upset with Columbus West in the first round of the district tourney. 33 1. Coach Stephan had a rough time as illnesses, and no gym to practice in left them scrambling to stay in shape. Despite the prob- lems, the Cards put together a string of six wins riding into the OCC tournament on a high tide. The disappointment of a fourth place standing was forgotten as the Cards rallied taking second in the district and placing five men in the state tournament. Standouts were Junior Steve Foley, who compiled more team points than anyone in Worthington Wrestling history, and Senior Matt White who capped off an outstanding season with a 2nd place in the state. 40 1. Gordon Zyre at midfield was chosen All American. Coach John Galipault won Midwest Coach of the Year. The Cards finished the season undefeated. The essence of “Fiddler” can be summed up in one Yiddish phrase: L’Chaim, to life! It is a musical celebration of the humor and gusto that the Jews find in living, in the face of harassment. There were two outstanding casts, led by emperors Joe Blackmore and Lance Carwile. Due to its size, they had a few extra problems finding cos- tumes, getting wigs made etc. They all man- aged to get their act together before opening nite. The cast also enjoyed a few days skipping school while performing to the delightful youngsters in the school district. When the West hall filled with furniture boxes, the seniors rearranged them into the caverns of Worthington, and then used them for a Paul Simon inspired graffiti game called “50 ways to do various things to various people.” Debbie Rosen- dahl’s new little red MG was so cute that someone tried to walk off with it, leaving it wedged between two other cars clear across the parking lot. A rumor circulated that Matt White had been seen without a girl, and 14 young ladies showed up to fill the vacancy. And, as always Bret Beegle was nominated for Homecoming Queen. As seen here and on the following pages, the Class of '76 had quite a year. 197 SENIOR SPIRIT really kept the school jumping. Athletes like Kevin Sullivan brought fear to opponents every- where Bagism brought a dif- ferent fear to the school, as it crept out of the AV room to rampage the building. The Ten Man Kazoo Band was buck more subdued and intellectual with two 4 points, but still rowdy enough to present Evil Boll- weevil, and the one and only Wonderous Wilke, champion banana eater. Sue Lennon and Mary Lentz were an intriguing couple during the first annual spirit week. Wonder of wonders, the senior float stood during the Homecoming downpour, while the workers took time off to cheer up Junior Kathy Baker, by telling her that she really did look like a drowned rat.
