Worcester State College is not just a school on the Hill” but an institution that is unique in its people, its spirit, and its events. These three things combined bring the students here together to share in some of the fond memories that we have had during our four years. Since 1874 this school has been serving its students faithfully to its fullest capacity. Times, along with the people, have changed along the way. Whether or not we achieved our goals we set as Freshman Worcester State has provided us with the opportunity to do our best and to mature through our endeavors. Each student and staff member has contributed his or her own qualities to Worcester State. Pre-occupied, however with classes and our own daily routines, some students did not take advantage of the opportunities to learn about the personalities of our other classmates and the school itself. To those of you who didn’t we give you this book, to look back and see what you have missed and put it in proper perspective with your own goals that you have now established. Worcester State students are distinct from other college students in Worcester. We set out and attain what it is that we want from the school. The re-opening of the pub proved to all of us and the school that we can handle pressure and ascertain a mature level of what is the college student as we see it today. We all should be proud of our individual accomplishments and our accomplishments to the school. For Worcester State will continue to gain respect in the community and continue to graduate successful students into that so called Big Bad World.” Remember “It’s a jungle out there.” For those of you who graduate and leave the campus behind, you carry with you the memories of all the people and events which continue Worcester State College a very special institution. To capture the uniqueness of the students, the faculty, the administrators and most importantly you, our fellow students and friends we present to you, TRANSITIONS, 1987 . . . and we hope your life is filled with them. _J 1 mm 4 TRANSITIONS A home away from home TRANSITIONS 5 Silence WSC changes with the seasons . . . 6 TRANSITIONS The Sullivan Building Stop following me!! What an experience it has been to be a part of the “60 or over” elderly student program here at Worcester State College. To have been a part of the intergenerational movement that has permeated our school, where both young and old students are able to communicate, study, respect and accept each others contribution to life. This 1987 graduation year has brought forth the first fruits of the innovative, productive and far sighted venture into the field of the elderly. Our thanks to President Phillip D. I think there are a lot of pre-conceived notions about this position and the responsibility that comes with it, but you have to weather the course, you have to lead the ship through both the calm seas and the high seas. You can know all about responsibilities and duties, but until you’ve experienced it, you don ' t really know how to deal with it.” Vairo has, in five short years, revitalized an institution for higher learning and together Phil Vairo and Worcester State College are leading the revitalization of the City on Seven Hills. He has created an environment that appeals to, and deals with a wide variety of educational curriculums, ethnic origins, and mental and physical challenges. At the core of what I’ve always tried to do is the question: What would I want as a student? What programs, opportunities, services? These are the questions and problems that I try to address. What we’ve tried to create here at Worcester State is an educational environment that is conducive to learning and teaching. The students and staff are what makes a college president appear the way he does. And it’s not just one person that’s revitalizing this place. It’s everyone that The official title reads: Philip D. Vairo, President, Worcester State College, but to the students, faculty, administration and staff that spend their days and nights at the buildings at the intersections of Chandler and May streets, he is known simply, affectionately, and unequivocally as Phil. President Vairo took time to chat one sunny day last April, and the topics and questions ran the gamut of possibilities, but Vairo handled each one as deftly as Wade Boggs reaching out and slapping an opposite-field single. Vairo has been at the helm for five years here at Worcester State, and in many ways this is his first graduating class that he has watched grow, mature and blossom in the 48 months since they were known as another group of “incoming favorites.” Technically speaking, last year’s class should be considered his first, but Vairo was in his first year then and really didn’t feel as comfortable with the school, the city and his surroundings as he did when the Class of 1987 strode in. Education is a process that keeps you going, keeps you young, said Vairo. Red Auerbach once said, when asked which team of his was the greatest, ‘Every team is different, unique, great in its own way.’ Well that’s the way I feel about the students and classes here. They are unique, all great. They all have something that separates them from the classes before them, and the classes to follow. I will say one thing, but not as a direct reflection to this class. These last four years have been the most exciting years of my life, and I’m learning a lot. Experience is a big key in a position such as Vairo’s and he people’s lives, then I’ll be content, because that’s what it is all about. Using the experience of my 54 years to help guide and mold the lives of the young, the people without the benefit of my experience, but I’ll gladly give it to them.” As the interview neared its conclusion, Vairo was asked if he had any message for this year’s seniors, soon to be the best and the brightest in that place, affectionately known as “The Real World, The Jungle.” Vairo thought for a long moment and then proceeded. “To the seniors: I think hard work is an important and integral part of your arsenal as you go forth to achieve success. Your constant respect for others should never be minimized. You have assessed your strengths, your weaknesses, and made your decision, chosen your careers. You ' re about to set foot on a journey that will take you, who knows where? Only in America, can these opportunities be placed in front of you for the taking. Good luck, I look forward to seeing your successes. I am glad we were able to sail together for the past four years. So, as you depart, I salute you, and wish you well.” Article by: Ken Powers comes to this College on a daily basis, from the Faculty to the Students to the Administrators to the support help, It’s a combined effort, and everyone has chipped in and really done more than their share. To be quite frank with you, I think this is a great place, and I have no desire to leave here. I know a lot of people say things like, “He ' s just making his mark, building up his Resume, then he’s taking off. No way brother, as long as this College wants me as President, because I have no desire to be somewhere I’m not wanted, then this is where I’ll be. Through it all, Vairo maintains, and commands, a certain degree of dignity, of respect. You have to be truthful, honest with people. Treat them with respect. I can be walking down Main Street with the President of a Fortune 500 Corporation and if I see you walking down the street, then I’m going to stop and say Hi!, to see how you are. And it won’t be because I’m phony, or just putting on a good show, It ' s because deep down I care. You can’t misuse the position. If you do, people will lose respect for you, and that’s the worst possible thing that can happen. The Lancer women quickly disposed of them and in their next game they defeated WPI, making Michelle Pouliot, Jackie Nunez, Eva Miele, Tricia Hallet, Carol Ringer and Paula Lemieux — collectively known as the Worcester State Lancers — 2-0 on the young season. Regis College became victim number three, Babson was number four and then came Eastern Nazarene, Assumption, Wellesley, Fitchburg State, Framingham State, AIC, Clark University, and Southeastern Mass. At this point the Lady Lancers were 12-0 and people were starting to notice the team that had spent the last four years performing as one. For those players and fans associated with Worcester State volleyball, few were surprised about the outcome. Least surprised of all was probably first year coach Laura Habacker, who had spent the previous fall battling these same women. At that time, however, Habacker had worn the scarlet and white colors of Clark University. “From playing against them last year, I knew how good they were, how quick they were. The longer a unit stays together, the more it begins to become one. This group is as close to being one as any team that I have played for or against.” The streak continued. Next in line, Brandeis. Followed by Salem State, WPI, Assumption, Clark, WPI, Bridgewater State, Roger Williams, Westfield State, Simmons, North Adams State, Smith College, Wellesley, Clark, and then Clark again. An incredible 27-0!!! Along the way the Lancers picked up their third straight MAIAW state title, as well as lots of well-deserved attention, from both other programs and local newspapers. But Habacker’s alma mater came back to haunt State, as the Lancers unbeaten streak was shattered on a cold November morning by The Cougars of Clark University in the first round of the ECAC regional playoffs. Along the streak, Worcester State showed that a successful team is much more than just its starters, and the Lancers benefitted from excellent bench strength from reserves, Jeanne Heine, Diane Klett, Wendy Flagg and Chrissy Mitchell. As a team, all the Lancers came through this season. In doing so, they raised a part of Worcester State Athletics up for all to see and be proud. Congratulations on a job well done. KEN POWERS SPORTS 113 LANCER FIELD HOCKEY 114 SPORTS SPORTS 115 Hockey By Ken Powers With a noticeable lack of depth on the defensive end, and a lack of experience coming off the bench, the 1987 edition of the Worcester State College Ice Hockey Team struggled through an 8-17 campaign. The Lancers were led by Tim Corcoran, who finished as the team’s leading scorer. He was assisted by Rich and Jon Grant, both defensemen, although Rich did play some left wing. The quartet of Kevin Collins, Brian Tulley, Joe Scampini and Jay Barrett proved to be key penalty killers working in front of goalies Tony Coccio and John Bertoletti, who were peppered with shots night in and night out. I think what hurt the team this year was the lack of a true leader, said Assistant Coach Kevin Conway (other coaches were: Dave Quinn, Head Coach, Larry Schyler, assistant coach; and Don Danjou, assistant coach). “A lot of people did come through, people like Scampini, Tim Corcoran, Steve Horrigan, but basically it was a young and inexperienced team, and I think over the long run, that’s what hurt us the most. I feel that someone like Scampini or Coccio could come in and take charge next year and that would make a big difference. This team really needs a leader, someone they can look to on and off the ice. If that happens I think it could really turn this team around,” explained Conway. 116 SPORTS In Dedication A warm wind blows across the field; The soul of the spectator blows hot breath on the home team warriors. With invisible crystal eyes, he smiles at the dark leaves falling from his thinning hair. His foot, rooted in every blade of grass, taps in rhythm to the shouting, swaying crowd as the battle rages on his field. His flesh, the warm brown earth, cushions the thunderous crash of each falling soldier. His heart, a pulsing wave, roars through the stands with every yard gained. His tear, the seed of a memory, grows and flowers with each mention of his name. In dedication, he now watches his home team. In his honor they will win! (In memory of Doc Coughlin, 1986) Robert A. The sunlight came from a magnificently beautiful day in which the sky was as blue as velvet and there was nary a cloud in the sky. The warmth came from the sense of accomplishment that these graduates had, for each one had made it. They had persevered through their own problems, tragedies, and setbacks. They had helped friends weather many stormy situations. And, through it all, they had grown stronger. Now, for many of them, they had reached the pinnacle of the academic life. As the prospective graduates entered the John “Doc” Coughlin memorial field, they were greeted by Dr. Philip Vairo, President of the College, the Board of Trustees, and Ms. Liz Walker, co-anchor for WBZ TV-4, nightly news. The graduates first heard from Dr. Vairo, who complemented them on their success, and wished them good fortune and health. Kenneth Brissette, president of the senior class, then walked to the podium, and in a poignant and reflective speech, alked about what the members of the i slass of ’87 had tried to accomplish during heir stay, what they had accomplished, and what it had all meant. Brissette quoted rock superstar Bruce Springsteen saying “Over the course of time, this country is starting to take on a new problem. There is developing here a society in which only two classes really exist. Those who have and those who don’t, and somewhere along the line, a lot of promises are gettin’ broken, and sadly, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.” Brissette quickly noted however, that as he looked out to the Class of 1987’s graduates, he saw people whom he thought could make a difference, and who could improve parts of the world. “You can be as great as you want to be,” Brissette said. “And I think that you are all pretty damn terrific.” As Ms. Walker rose to give her remarks, she started by saying, “How do you follow this guy, Whoo!” She then told the graduates that “There is nothing you cannot do,” and that she remembers graduating from college in Michigan, loading up the car and driving to Chicago for her first job. “For the first three miles, I thought I was Mary Tyler Moore, but then it hit me, I was on my own, and I was pretty frightened.” “But, I realized, the greater the risk, the greater the reward.” Walker urged the graduates to return to old fashioned values. “Many of today’s scandals happened because som ewhere along the line someone got greedy and decided to cheat. Cheating is wrong, and eventually you will be caught.” Walker urged graduates not to be afraid to stand on their own, because sometimes, “you have to stand against the crowd.” She told graduates to remember that money is not everything and that you must remember to laugh, and also to remember to respect and commit themselves to fellow human beings. “Sometimes we forget it’s all about human contact and touching.” Walker, in addition to Robert S. Bowditch and Helen A. Bowditch, received honorary degrees. J. Richard Bullock, former president of Wyman Gordon, was the 1987 recipient of the college’s Outstanding Community Service Medallion. Robert Barros was presented the Board of Trustees recognition award. Barros just finished a five-year term on the Board. Cindi-Lee McTiernan, also received the Trustees recognition award, as well as the prestigious Ella M. Whitney award. The college handed out 617 Baccalaureate degrees, 138 Master’s degrees and five Certificates of Advanced Graduate Studies during the two and a half hour ceremony. At the time I thought we would find one but September was coming quickly and there was no Editor to our book. This is where I came in. I told Mr. Sullivan I would assume the job. At the time I did not realize all the work that was ahead of me but it was very soon when I found out. Amid the panic, frustration, tears and those exhausting endless nights in July, Kerri Conlon and I finally finished the book. To the Transitions Staff I am grateful to each and every one of you. I would especially like to thank Peter Codner, Pat Pearson, Michelle Pouliott, and a huge thank you to Arnie Lohmann, for if it weren ' t for him this book would never have been published. I would also like to thank Henry Grampietro for his help over the year. I think in the future years here at Worcester State, we have to find people who do not do everything to complete such a task as an Editor of future publications. More and more people need to be involved rather than just a few. It takes many to put out a good book. I hope that we accomplished that for you. As for me, I look back at this book as a symbol of pride and an awful lot of hard work. It is your remembrance of college and I can only wish for all of you the self confidence and accomplishments that I have gained in being the Editor of the 1987 Transitions yearbook. God Bless and Thank You. Sincerely, Ken Brissette Editor-in-Chief 1987 Transitions 176 TRANSITIONS ■ . Wsa II
