President Vairo’s Inauguration i 4

Page 7 text:

The class of 1983 would like to dedicate our yearbook to our p resident, Dr. Philip D. Vairo. During his first year as president of Worcester State College, he has shown many admirable qualities and much dedication. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his concern and hard work.

April 10, 1983 The inauguration of Philip Dominic Vairo left Worcester State College with one of the most delightful and exciting indications of its past and future glories, and left all who attended with a legacy of commitment to the college and its community. Pomp and style were the rule for the day. The pouring rain did nothing to dampen the hearts of these who came to see the investiture of the colleges eighth president in its one hundred nine year history. Scholars representing over sixty institutions of higher education throughout the country added to the festivities, as did members of the clergy, including Bishop Bernard Flanagan. Letters from three former and present governor Michael Dukakis were read to the audience by Master of Ceremonies Dr. William O’Neil, all of whom praised the new President for his leadership ability, innovative administration and dynamic personality. Greetings were offered from distinguished guests including Mayor Sara J. Robertson, union representatives from the campus, Ann O’Hare, president of the Student Government Association, Congressmen Joseph Early, and Dr. James L. Rosser, president of California State University at Los Angeles, where Vairo most recently served as Acting Vice-President of Academic Affairs. The afternoon was enlivened with music provided by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Men’s chorus and Women chorale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Brass Ensemble. The high point of the day came when Dr. John B. Duff chancellor of Higher Education for the Commonwealth, swore in the new leader and presented him with the Presidential Medallion of WSC. In his inaugural address, Vairo discussed his childhood in Brooklyn and the importance of cultural pluralism in American society and in Worcester specifically. The new president was very optimistic about the future of Worcester State and expressed pride in the faculty, staff, facilities and, most importantly, the students here, because students is what Worcester State is all about.” by Carl E. D’Angio Jr. Editor in Chief, The Student Voice
