Vairo. During his first year as president of Worcester State College, he has shown many admirable qualities and much dedication. We would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his concern and hard work. President Vairo’s Inauguration i 4 April 10, 1983 The inauguration of Philip Dominic Vairo left Worcester State College with one of the most delightful and exciting indications of its past and future glories, and left all who attended with a legacy of commitment to the college and its community. Pomp and style were the rule for the day. The pouring rain did nothing to dampen the hearts of these who came to see the investiture of the colleges eighth president in its one hundred nine year history. Scholars representing over sixty institutions of higher education throughout the country added to the festivities, as did members of the clergy, including Bishop Bernard Flanagan. Letters from three former and present governor Michael Dukakis were read to the audience by Master of Ceremonies Dr. William O’Neil, all of whom praised the new President for his leadership ability, innovative administration and dynamic personality. Greetings were offered from distinguished guests including Mayor Sara J. Robertson, union representatives from the campus, Ann O’Hare, president of the Student Government Association, Congressmen Joseph Early, and Dr. James L. Rosser, president of California State University at Los Angeles, where Vairo most recently served as Acting Vice-President of Academic Affairs. The afternoon was enlivened with music provided by the Worcester Polytechnic Institute Men’s chorus and Women chorale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Brass Ensemble. The high point of the day came when Dr. John B. Duff chancellor of Higher Education for the Commonwealth, swore in the new leader and presented him with the Presidential Medallion of WSC. In his inaugural address, Vairo discussed his childhood in Brooklyn and the importance of cultural pluralism in American society and in Worcester specifically. The new president was very optimistic about the future of Worcester State and expressed pride in the faculty, staff, facilities and, most importantly, the students here, because students is what Worcester State is all about.” by Carl E. D’Angio Jr. Editor in Chief, The Student Voice Board of Trustees The board of trustees is responsible for establishing necessary policies for the administrative management of personnel and staff services and the business of the institution. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and lonliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Government has been very busy this year to keep the residence happy. Government has sponsored various activities this year. Every Saturday and Sunday there has been breakfast in the commons area. People gather around to munch on a donut and chat about their adventures from the night before. Government has had trips, one of the favorite ones was a hayride. Taco and Pizza night were the big hits this year. Everyone packed into the commons to savor a piece of steamy pizza or a spicy taco. Chandler Village Government ended the year with a huge barbecue. 147 On a beautiful spring day, Chandler Vil lage, home of the dorm students, held their annual Chandler Village Barbecue. Food was provided by the Acapulco, a favorite local Mexican food restaurant. The entertainment was furnished by GRETTA. Chandler Village 148 Chandler Village 149 f I • - ' J pw 1 |t T Instead of the annual Spree Day, this year was a picnic, inspired by President Vairo. Jim Polito was the chairperson of this gala event, that was held the last day of classes. The 2000 people in at- tendance ate hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and salad, prepared by the stu- dent center staff, and listened to music by three bands, blue grass, rock, and jazz. Gil Scott-Heron, Bishop Flanagan, and Charles Laquidara, three distinctive peo- ple, were all speakers at Worcester State College this year. Thru Gil Scott-Heron’s music comes a message of unity among the Third World. His music and message is that of change, no sliding backward. Bishop Flanagan was on campus April 6. He discussed the important issue of nuclear weapons in our society. This event was sponsored by (J. Cam, an organization that is concerned with nu- clear awareness. Charles Laquidara, who is a disc jockey for WBCN radio station, held a very in- formal discussion about life. He talked about musical groups, his personal life and assorted other topics. Those who were there enjoyed this as a brief quiet break between classes. 15 ? “The Voice Challenge” . . I’ve lived a life that’s full, I traveled each and ev’ry highway, and more, much more than this, I did it my way. Regrets I’ve had a few, but then again, too few to mention, I did what I had to do, and, saw it thru without exemption. I planned each charted course, each careful step along the by way, and more, much more than this, I did it my way. Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew, when I bit off more than I could chew, but thru it all, when there was doubt, I ate it up and spit it out, I faced all, and I stood tall, and did it my way. I’ve loved I’ve laughed and cried, I’ve had to fill my share of losing, and now tears subside I find it all so amusing, To think I did all that, and may I say, “Not in a shy way.’’ Oh no, oh no, not me, I did it my way. 207 Li AlflOOD 53547ft FOR REFERENCE Do Not Take From This Room
