K The stars are merry, and the moon is bright, what do the stars tell me tonight? Ah! Uniforms! George Armstrong, Henry Purnell, Leroy Holland, and Alfred Jarmon have joined the army, The cutest girl of '56, Betty A, Waters is now a WAC, Well, Goodmans department store has hired Eva Collick to work in the Alteration Department, She's doing a fine job, we see! Down the center of my crystal ball, I can see only white caps, It grows clearer--Nurses! Emestine Dnimmond and Elizabeth Harmon! Angels of mercy, As my ball shines clearer, I see books, desks--wait! Another desk and a classroom, look! Shirley Hudson is the teacher, My sense of gazing into the future is high tonight, As soon as one vision vanishes, another crowds the surface, What have we here? Dye, combs, hair, fingernails, and now--faces, Ah! Beauticians are graduating, They are Gloria Worthington, Elsie Parker, Frances Shockley, Thelma Purnell, Bern- adine Short, Ellen Drummond, and Naomi Davis, Wait! Richard White is with them--a barber, Lovely, 'tis lovely, It's gone! I see no more, But, hark! I hear music--Braxton Smith on the saxophone, and Esther Holden a pianist, 'Tis beautiful! I am carried away on the wings of songs, My ball! It holds another vision, Water splashes, motors hum, and men are running to and fro, Mechanics! I see George Harmon, Ralph Handy, Ernest Mister and William Taylor, are greasy, but busy and about a great work, l shall rest my eyes and boil the future in my huge container, Maybe the vapors will reveal more, Boom! An explosion, I see Isaac Williams has just proven his great chemical theory, The air is heavy with vapor and it reveals much, Barry Fortune and his staff have edited a new bulletin 'The Republican. Bernice Deshields, Elsie Gumby and Jeannette Milbourne are his key re- porters and stenographers, Behind them I see Rebecca White and Willie Harmon, What are they doing, Secretarial work I'm sure, My ball is cloudy, I can faintly see, But wait, it reveals something! It gets clearer and I see an object, they have cameras, It's Edison Golden--busy at photography, As my large container clears--I see airplanes, trains, radios, TV's and what! There is Willard Brown, Harold Pumell and Raymond White, Electrical engineering is their business, Tonight it seems as though my sense of gazing into the future gets higher--and I see lumber, nails, blocks, shingles, and now houses--wait I see signs 'Houses to Rent or to Buy, Yes! There is Willard Hearne with his carpentry apron and Matthew Gillette with his real estate book, In my huge container I see--cows, horses, tractors, corn pickers--It's a farm! Rayfield Foreman is going toward the barn with his milk buckets and Frank Marshall is busy with those tools fixing a hay bind- ing machine, My ball is shining clearer and I see tables, lamps and stands being built, It's Eugene Smith and he is building, Oh! My ball has cleared and the stars have disappeared, Ah--what the future holds for us,
