As- cending the gigantic Walnut Street Hill, we were filled with confused emotions of hope, anxiety and fear, which the 'ihelpful seniorsn soon banished by concerning themselves with our health and directing us to imaginary un- derground passages and aiding us to restricted elevators. Regret registered in every eye, when Calvin Andrews departed from us. But in losing a dear friend and principal, we gained two admirable, efficient and esteemed men, Mr. William Casey, our respected principal, and Mr. James Man- ning, one of his indispensable assistants, lwho has combined his efforts with Mr. Edward Tobin to establish an incomparable team at Commerce. Many thanks to Mr. Manning for having saved students from wasting too many after-school hours at the p.m. sessions by show- ing his kindness in affording only four p.m.,s when five perhaps would be in order. We presently became aware of the accom- plished school in which we had enrolled, for not only did the Girls' Field Hockey Team and Boys' Varsity Football Team capture the much coveted city titles, but also The Mercury, our outstanding school paper, won first place honors at the convention of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. To add honors to honors, Commerce won mention at the Music Festival in Gloucester, with our freshmen angelic voices blending to- gether to present a triumphant performance. Our sophomore year proved just as success- ful as our freshman year, naturally, ffor our class was topsj and our athletes clinched their second Inter-High Hockey Title and the Base- ball Team won the Inter-High Championship, fthe girls, not to be outdone, captured the Basketball Titlej, rounding out that year's great athletic history. Although we were introduced to the new Twenty-two marking system that term, I don't recall our marks particularly improving, although Libby Moskovitz and Gladys Carlson received their customary E's,,' but Johnny Aquino and James Pedone still obtained . . . Ch, well, let us continue with our History! The accomplishments during our wizened sophomore year reached towering limits, for our class was not only the most brilliant, but also the most athletic class in the history of Commerce. Our tennis team was excellent and our girl athletes, Lois Anderson, Germaine Amyot, and Virginia Grimala, contributed to its many victories. I think that year we lost only . . . Well, let's not resurrect that memory! The Golf Inter-High title was captured and Commerce won its second consecutive Inter- High Baseball crown, which S'Handsome Hank Brennan, Joe i'Jupiter Lanava, Fred 'fthe Headv Smith, and Ray Speed', Steele helped to make possible. Bragging unintentionally, with- out these three men, Commerce might have suf- fered seriously. The girls, striding on the same level as the boys, captured the Year Around Cupn for their basketball championship and Held hockey title, which they obtained through untiring efforts. The commendable program which the Black- friars presented in the assembly hall at Christ- mas with some of the many talented members of our class participating, thrilled us, even though the next day Nurse Higgins was ener- vated by massaging quite a few stiff necks, which had been strained and twisted in the process of craning them, so that we could feast our eyes upon this magnificent performance. Entering our junior year we wasted no time in establishing ourselves as one of the most brilliant, superbly athletic, and admirable classes and we managed to advance through a glorious and tremendously happy junior year, resolved to face all difficulties courageously, overcome all obstacles unfearfully and become a strong, united group. For the third consecutive year the Mercuries clinched the Inter-High Baseball title, with our class once again in the limelight, and the Black- friars presented another triumphant perform- ance by staging 4'Seven Keys to Baldpate with Norman Martin and Eugenie Szlyk sharing the honors. Who knows, perhaps some sunny day when we chance to wander into the Palace Theatre, we may see the superb team of Martin and Szlyk surpassing the one of Turner and Gable. We terminated our junior term feeling proud of the fact that we had elected capable and efhcient leaders who had guided us through a promising year. An outstanding President was Patrick Gabriella, a popular Vice-President was Mary Foley, recording our honorable deeds was Irene Ferraro, and spending the little money we had in the treasury was John Gillio. The long anticipated day when the title of seniors was conferred upon us at last arrived. Vi Lazour was elected Editor-in-Chief of our magnificent school paper, The Mercury. Of course, when '50-A took over The Mercury Staff, we published a paper that was doubly applauded and appraised. Graduation plans soon involved us in a tur- moil of excitement and flurry, leaving the girls with smaller budgets for the succeeding year and the boys with just their natural holes in their pockets. For our senior class ofhcers we re-elected 'iPolitician Pat Gabriella, President, chose personality-plus kid, Franny Lorusso, Vice- President, Janet Loftus, Secretary and Record- er of our numerous doings, and Norman Martin in charge of our Treasury without funds. At this time I would like to state the fact that cupid had not been suffering from insomnia for our nfemme fatale, Gretta Catherwood and that red-headed hunk of man,', Bob Erri- cola could be seen hand-holding through the corridors. Some of the outstanding athletes from our senior class who kept Commerce on top al- ways, were Art Flaherty, Hank Brennan, Chet Levins, Fred Smith, Ray Steele and Hal Erick- son. To show our class contained not only brawn but brains, we had the following Horace Mann students: Gladys Carlson, Carolyn Erickson, Arthur Flaherty, Grace Stratcosz, Libby Mosko- vitz and Natalie Mankovitz. Class Day Representatives chosen were: talka- tive Bob Erricola, as Class Oratorg Fingers Eleanor Nasitano, Class Pianistg 'gThe Voice Lucille Melucci, Class Voealistg Mirthful Vi Lazour, Reader of the Class VVill: Talented jason Rosenbloom, Class Musician, and Natalie Mankovitz, Class Historian. A very important social event must be re- corded before we terminate this glorious history of the 1950-A Class, and that is our forthcom- ing Senior Prom which is to be held at the Elks' Ballroom. It will no doubt be one of the outstanding social successes of our high school days. I hope Charley Hagg and Vi Lazour realize this is just a prom and not the first step to a budding romance. In concluding this, the History of the 1950-A Class, we wish to extend our deepest apprecia- tion to our devoted parents, Mr. Casey, and all the members of the faculty, who, because of their understanding and guidance have aided us through four very joyous and fruitful years. We want to thank Mr. Tobin, sincerely, for handling our graduation preparations com- petently and efficiently. We want to extend our grateful appreciation to Mr. Sleeper for making this Class Day a huge success. We shall always cherish fondly the memories of our four wonderful years spent at the High School of Commerce and may each and every- one of us meet with prosperity, happiness and good health in the future. The last chapter of our Book is being com- pleted and we are about to face a wide and chaotic World. We pledge our loyalty and faithfulness to our Dear Alma Mater, and with the help of God and our own persistent efforts, we know we will make Commerce very proud of Her Sons and Daughters, the Class of 1950-A. NATALIE MANKOVITZ Clays Historian Page Twentj three Elm Sw, of 1950-Al I Look towards the sky, Oh classmates The future is our aim, Through portals we have left behind, We'll blaze our way to fame. II The time to part is drawing near, These years we'll ne'er forget, The days of golden happiness, The friends that we have met. dear, III For Commerce High our voices ring, The school welve cherished, dear, May all these days in memories lie, As future years draw near. IV Oh Commerce High, Dear Commerce Our triumphant Gold and Blue, May all our wishes be fulfilled, And all our dreams come true. High l HELEN DITARANTO Author of Class Song Page Twenty-four JOHN GILLIO Composer of Class Song CITY OFFICIALS Very soon our city of Worcester will be functioning under a new form of municipal government. I will try to give you the highlights of the new system, HPLAN Ef' In this type of government the voter voted for a council of nine members selected not from separate wards as now, but from the whole city. These nine men will have authority similar to those of the present city council. The reins of control will be in their hands. They will pass the laws and ordinances, rule on the city-manager's budget requests and fix the tax rate. This council also will vote appropriations and may create or abolish city departments. The responsibility of actual management, however, will be turned over to a high official with the title of city- manager appointed by the council to hold ofiice during its pleasure and paid a good salary for his work. In order that the council may run smoothly, a mayor will be chosen by and from the members of the council. This mayor differs from our present mayor in that he will be merely the spokesman for the council's policies, he will make speeches and give out interviews, he will represent the city on all public occasions, and will be the chairman of the council and of the school committee. The man who will really be in charge of our city-the one on whom all responsibility must restfis the city manager whogas you remember, will be appointed by the council. He must be an all'r0und type of man, a good, sound business man, and must conduct the affairs of the city as would the general manager of a large business concern. He will not be a Democrat or a Repub- lican, as such, he may come from any part of the United States, and need not fear any man so long as he does his job well. His duties will be four-fold. First of all, in an advisory capacity he will attend all meetings of the council with the right to be heard and to make recommendations, but not to vote. Secondly, he will be the enforcer of all ordinances. In the third place, he will appoint all city oflicials and employees, subject, however, to the civil service regulations, and may suspend or dismiss any of them for proper cause. In this connection, he will assign to each official the sphere of work to be done. Finally, he will prepare the annual budget, submitting it to the council for action. He is general supervisor of all the work done in the various departments and offices, having charge of contracts, and the purchase of supplies-the details being handled by his subordinates. The manager plan is designed for efficiency. It centralizes responsibility in a group of nine men. The manager himself will probably be almost entirely out of the limelight, tending to business. He will be the general manager of the 325,000,000 corporation of Worcester. He will work to make the city more efficient and by doing so to lessen the strain on your pocketbook and mine. Let us hope that our venture into the field of 'SBig Business will prove as satisfactory and helpful as we now anticipate it to be. To Mr. Tobin-Twenty secretaries and a bottle of aspirin to aid him in preparing the next senior class for graduation. To Mr. ManningwA slight case of writer's cramp so that for a few weeks, at least, there will be fewer P.M. slips written. To Mr. Sleeper-A senior class with future play- wrights and Broadway actors so that there will be very little trouble in presenting the Class Day Play. To Mr. Stevens-eA well-deserved Oscar for his classroom dramatizations. To Miss Burdette-A book entitled 'SHOW To Make Seniors Pay Smilinglyf' To Mr. Osborn+A set of 100 games and quizzes to help him plan the entertainment for the History Club meetings. To Miss Lundstrom-A class of champion speed typists. To Mr. Dickie-A volume entitled 4'Anecdotes from American Historyn so that his supply will never be exhausted. To the Juniors-A shiny penny to start their collection which will be sorely needed to meet their graduating expenses. The following students, for no reason at all, wish to bequeath a few of their treasures: Phyllis Holmes leaves her gym classes to anyone who can stand stiff and aching muscles for four years. Norman Martin leaves his political abilities to the next person fortunate enough to fill his many vacant offices. Anna and Mary Lewandowski leave-and we still can't tell them apart. Charlie Hagg leaves his numerous turtle-necked sweaters. Ginny Gray leaves her cheerful personality and happy-go-lucky nature. Ray Steele leaves a book entitled How To Get A Right Answer Even Though You Don't Studyf, Corrine Zellmer leaves her gum-chewing ability to anyone with jaws as durable as hers. Art Flaherty leaves some of his speed to Frannie Horgan who never seems to get to school before the 8: 10 bell. Janet Loftus leaves a wet stamp sponge to the next mailing clerk for The Mercury. Red Cheney leaves the ability to make people think she is a quiet girl. Gasper Olivieri and Jeanne Barbour leave their jobs as Sports Editors of The Mercury to anyone who thinks those are easy jobs. Mary Perry and Gloria Levine leave-and with them go two of Mr. Butler's steadiest customers. Eleanor Nasitano leaves one of her enormous lunches to some starving freshman. Jay Rosenbloom leaves his saxophone to the next musician who has as much wind as he has. Deenie Boston lcaves her Ngift of gabu to some entering freshman who may find himself at a loss for words. Bob Frink leaves his motor scooter to the office messengers. Natalie Mankovitz leaves her writing ability to some underclassman who is seeking an NE in composition. Bob Erricola leaves his red, wavy hair to any envious girl in the junior class. Libby Moskovitz and Betty Shaughnessy leave their fun-loving natures. Roy White and John Aquino leave their am- bitious natures. The entire Class of 1950-A leaves-we hope. Having bestowed our personal treasures, we, the Class of 1950-A, do hereby set our hand and seal to this, our last will and testament and hereto ajix our signatures as attesting witnesses. fSignedj Viola Lazour Testatrix fWitnessesj Patrick Gabriella Class President janet Loftus Class Secretary VIOLA LAZOUR Class Testatrix Page Twenty-seven Glu!! fbaq fl 50- ' 14 MUSICAL PROGRAM FOR CLASS DAY, '50-A March - nProcessional March .... Patricia Guertin, Class Historian As we, the members of the Class of 1950, in- dividually face an uncertain future, it is well that we pause briefiy to review and to rejoice in the four years which we have spent together as a Class. Never again shall we be together in quite the same unity of spirit and purpose. In the years that are to come we shall remember these years: their fun, their sorrow, their joyous beginning, and their dignified end. On that fateful day of September, 1946, when we entered these memorable halls of Commerce High, all faces were turned to the bewildered Freshmen. To say the least, we were lost and frightened. We were frantically looking behind doors for numbers of rooms, and wondering where on earth the 20 Hoor was, it couldnit be possible that it would be above the 30 floor! But it was! However, we soon adjusted ourselves to High School lifefto studies, clubs, sports, and all the various other activities. During this first year, the Freshmen boys, as well as the girls, found out just what it meant to take the course in Physical Ed- ucation. The girls, under the direction of Miss Phillips and Miss Bosworth, were literally taken over the hurdles of inspection, relay races, shuffle- board, badminton, track-running, basketball, and jumping-or should I say falling-over the buck. Ah, many were the days that we had sore muscles and aching bones from such exercises! If on some Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, Building One seemed to be shaking, it was only the boys in the Gym performing some of their activities under Coaches Ward and Davidson. The first of the girls sports was basketball. Un- der the able Captaincy of Ann McGrath, we scored our way to the Freshman Inter-High Champion- ship. After this, we started rolling. There were boys' basketball, boys, ice hockey, glee club, Christ- mas, and a much needed vacation, Easter, another vacation, tennis, baseball, and then the nearing of the end of our first year of high school life. As the year drew to a close, everyone was looking forward to the vacation, and to the time in the fall when we should be able to laugh at the funny little freshies. At last we were to beqreal, genuine, self-respect- ing High School of Commerce Sophomores. When, proud and overbearing, we sauntered into the school the following September of 1947, it was to conduct ourselves with a certain amount of dignity consistent with our new position. It didn't seem as if we had so much time to tease the Fresh- men as had those who had gone on before us, Our own school activities had begun to absorb our full attention. Again, as was required, we went through Gym classes, and seemingly because of our age, we were more tired after each workout. The boys of the Football Team were getting into the limelight by winning the Inter-High Crown. At the same time the Football players were having their workout at Page Forty-four the Athletic Field, the Girls' Field Hockey team was doing the same. None of this tiring exercise was in vain, however, as the girls also took the Inter-High Championship. The Class Basketball team, consisting of mostly Sophomore girls, was not quite up to their standard of playing basket- ball. However, we came in second place, with 4'Phyl Holmes as Captain. This second year was the time when we took up the fine art of typewriting. How well I re- member A-S-D-F and J-K-L-: ! To most of us this constant practice was not in vain, as some of us are still taking typewriting in some form, as Speed Typing for instance. It has also been a great help in the acquisition of jobs in offices, and will con- tinue to stand by us in the future. A new club was organized this year, The Future Drivers of America Club, which at this time had an enrollment of eighty members. The first Presi- dent of this club was Philip Hagopian. At this club you learned all about safety on the highways, and also the rules in the little green book. With the baseball season rolling around, it brought to a close another school year. As juniors, we started on the second half of our High School career. When we were officially or- ganized in 1948, we elected the following as our Class OHicers: Francis Horgan, President, Joan Mulvehill, Vice-President, Ann McGrath, Sec- retaryg and Richard Dymek, Treasurer. We must not leave out a very outstanding schol- astic member of our colorful class, Audrey Hindon. She has received many honors both at Commerce, and at the University of Chicago, which entered her as a Freshman after her Sophomore year here. The college oHicials rate her superior to the su- perior group. As juniors, we girl athletes were allowed to join the Varsity Basketball Team. With Nancy Curtis and Elda Ceppi, both of the Class of ,49-B, setting the pace, we came in second place for the Inter- High honors. The Boys' Basketball Team also did some Hne playing and scoring during this sea- son of play, with Tom Mullins being the cynosure of 'all eyes. After our Christmas vacation, we all settled down to the business at hand. First was the Good Government Day Conference, which was held in Boston. Our Representatives were Everett Kunin, Ann McGrath, and Norman Martin. We were now in the spotlight. We, the Juniors, held our junior Promenade at Tuckerman Hall on April 23, 1949. Joan Mulvehill was Chairman of the Prom Committee, assisted by other members of our class. At the Prom a Queen was chosen - the lucky girl was Marianne LeMay, who was presented with a crown of white carnations and pearls by the vocalist of the orchestra. The Girls' Tennis Team got off to a fine start by electing Miriam 6'Mimi,' Colwell as their Cap- tain. Their season, however, was not too profitable. I believe they came in third, but we don't talk too loudly about that, it is rather a sore spot. At this same time, the Music Organizations held a Spring Concert on May 4, under the direction of Mr. Abruzzese. The returns were used for supplies for the organizations. Lo and behold! We found that there was a merman in our midstHRobert Bobby Mattson. He has won many awards for his swimming achievements, both at school and away. He has even gone as far as California to compete, and he has also won the Washburn Award. The pres- ent President of the Student Council, he hopes to continue to specialize in this Held. One of his biggest hopes is to some day get to the National Olympics. Our Baseball Team had a very prosperous year. Under the Captaincy of Ray Steele, it won the Inter-High pennant. 'iBob', Duby from our class was one of the outstanding pitchers, while Albert HFitzy,' Fitzgerald was a nifty ccnterfielder, and 'fFran Gentile was first baseman. At the end of our Junior year, we all looked forward to the next September, when we would enter these halls as SENIORS. Practically overnight, we were back to resume our studies. We walked about the school with heads held high and a proud look on our faces, for we were now Seniors. We had Hnally reached our long awaited goal. To start off this last year, we elected our final Class Officers: Frank -Horgan, President, Ann McGrath, Vice-President, Marianne LeMay, Sec- retary, and Andrew Hacanis, Treasurer. To offset the many good things there must be other changes. This was proven by the death of Coach Ward, on October 23, 1949. He had been a teacher of Physical Education for many years. Then the whole school mourned the passing of Mr. Thomas Boyle, who was an excellent teacher as well as a friend to all. He had been a member of the faculty for 25 years, teaching Physics and Radio. Then after a long career came the retire- ment of Miss Elizabeth Craighead in January, 1950. She had been a teacher of English and French. The Class of 1950-A and -B held a joint Senior Promenade at the Elks Home on Novem- ber 26, 1949. About 300 couples attended this gala affair. Under the direction of George Greg- ory, the Orchestra leader, we had a Grand March. Many photographers were on hand to take candid and formal shots. The United States History Club went on a trip to Boston with Mr. Osborn, the Faculty Adviser, to visit the historical places and other places of interest. The Girls, Field Hockey Team won the Inter-High crown, with Virginia Kiaulenas as Captain. Co-Captains of the Football Team for the year of '49 were Hal,' Erickson and '4HankU Brennan, both of the Class of '50-A. Three football aces from our ,49 squad were chosen for the All-City Team. They were the Co-Captains, and Zigmont uZiggy Surawski, of the Class of ,50-B. The Boys' and Girls' Basketball Teams were organized under their respective coaches. For the boys, Sam LaCanfora was elected Captain, and for the girls, Sally Guthrie, '51-A, and Ann Mc- Grath were elected Co-Captains. The boys had a wonderful season with the help of their Captain and Paul Grogan. In fact, they won the Inter-High Crown. The girls, however, did not have a very successful season, with only one win out of six starts. They had two hard losses, one to the South lassies by one point, and the other to Classical by two points. With Christmas coming around, the Blackfriars staged the Assembly on December 21. The usual Christmas Story was narrated, while the words were put into tableau form for the benefit of the audience. Rita Rondeau, '50-B, was presented with the D. A. R. award. As anyone can see, she is follow- ing well in the footsteps of her sister, Lucille. To H11 the vacancy of Viola Lazour, as Editor- in-Chief of The Mercury, Nancy Anderson was appointed to the job. As Seniors, we elected our Class Day Partici- pants. They were as follows: Rosalie Malcangi, Class Vocalist, Geraldine Paulavedus, Class Pian- ist, Forrest Marcy, Class Musician, Theodore Lambert, Class Orator, Nancy Anderson, Class Testatrix, and C. Patricia Guertin, Class Historian. Sylvia Leahy is the author of the Class Song, and Robert Corkum wrote the music for the song. The Blackfriars, under the direction of Mr. John Oakes, are presenting a new play called, f'Ring Around Elizabethf' starring Sylvia Leahy as Elizabeth, with Alexander Jozefowski, Robert Bombard, Theodore Lambert, Joan Gordon, Nor- ma Skiest, and many others. VVe are very proud to present the names of our Horace Mann Scholars, who are as follows: Nancy Anderson, Elizabeth Desorda, Gladys Carlson, Eleanor Dion, Vivian Ellis, Carolyn Erickson, Arthur Flaherty, A. Joan Hanna, Sylvia Leahy, Forrest Marcy, Natalie Mankovitz, Eugenie Szlyk, Lillian Moskovitz, Rita Rondeau, Audrey Sjoberg, and Grace Strakosz. As our fourth and final year of High School draws to a close, we face our uncertain and per- sonal future, but who knows when or where we will meet that History classmate, or that Physics classmate, and actually do business with him? I have but one thing to say in closing, and that is: the Hrst three years don't seem to go by fast enough, but the last year! How it flies! And before you know it, you are an alumnus or an alumna of the High School of Commerce. C. PATRICIA GUERTIN Class Historian Page Forty-ji Clau .Sang '50-B Oh Commerce, Alma Mater, Oh mother tried and true, Thy parting children,s praises In song we give to you. It seems to me that Massachusetts is a most appropriate place to discuss human freedom and the challenge to free men and women. The impulse to be free is strong in every part of the world but nowhere is the spirit of independence and self-reliance more vigorous than in this state of ours. The difference between this nation and others is mainly the way we go about our job. We, people of the United States, place tour emphasis on the individual. If this free society of ours which we value so much, is to survive and grow, it must meet the challenge of the new order. It must shape itself to changing conditions. What I should like to do is to consider with you some of the challenges which we as a democratic, freedom-loving people must meet today. First, the moral and spiritual challenge. A sound world cannot be built on a founda- tion that does not have morality and spiritu- ality. There is no greater force in the world than the good example of men and women, possessing honesty, integrity and high purpose. It is the only basis on which a peaceful world can exist. The second great challenge is to raise the standard of living in this country. Research and education are joining their resources and the promise of technology is bright indeed. The third challenge to democracy today is not to compete with other political systems, but to provide distribution for the fruits of advance in education and in other ways for the benefits, in general, of humanity. Home and world co-operation on a large scale and in every Held of endeavor are a necessity in our time. The atomic bomb did not create a need for unity, it merely drama- tized it. And the great cloud that rose above Hiroshima made it impossible for anyone to believe that we can any longer retreat from universal co-operation to produce universal peace. It is my belief that in the years to come only a system in which men and women are free can achieve peace in the world. Democracy Theodore Lambert, Class Orator now faces its greatest test. It has demonstrated its superiority. Now it rnust begin to prove itself able to work with a realism and sympathy in areas where problems are quite different from ours. It must continue to demonstrate at home its ability to meet new problems because it can hope for no great following in distant lands if it fails to meet its challenges in this country. Tomorrow will be different from Today. The world is constantly changing. If the American system is to survive and spread its great bene- fits to all peoples of the world, it must utilize every talent. How it fares in the next century will depend to a very great extent on what we young people stand for and work for. We are stepping into a world oHiering vast oppor- tunities. It is up to us to grasp them. The challenge is ours. THEODORE LAMBERT Class Orator Page Forty seven 7wil'amenl 50-E .ful Zyllffancf ' The best proof I can offer that your senior year goes by much too fast is to tell you what happened to me. Mr. Tobin asked for the Class Will today, and I didn't have it done . . . it seemed only yesterday that I was asked to write it. I dashed around trying to find someone to help me. My first stop was on the third fioor, old building, where John Tarzian was trying to finish his latest masterpiece. I hope he will leave some of his talent for the art department. I found Rose Brescia in The Mercury office. She was worried about Mercury subscriptions for next year, and hoped to leave another room with stu- dents rich enough to spend 50 cents a semester. Bud Anderson was busy trying to make the dead- line on Boys, Sports material. He would be glad to leave a few of his sleepless nights, worrying about The Mercury. I was nearly knocked to the fioor, as I walked down stairs, by Vivian Ellis as she performed her duties as messenger. She said she would be glad to leave a bit of her efiiciency to the next messenger. All this, and she sings, too! I was still a bit upset by my tardiness, so I stopped at the nurse's office to get an aspirin. There was Bob Duby trying to locate a heart specialist to attend to all the Junior girls who,ll have severe cases of heart trouble when Bob graduates. I met Milton Friars in the Library. He was going to leave his copy of Webster's Dictionary, but he changed his mind. That dic- tionary and Milt are inseparable. Then I followed the path worn to the door of Room 10 by Bob Bombard and Sylvia Leahy as they rehearsed and rehearsed Ring Around Elizabeth. I met Joan Hanna on the Assembly Hall stage practicing that South American sway. Ted Lambert was in the balcony reading his oration. He agreed to leave his ability to emulate Billy Graham. In an effort to help me, bashful Sam LaGanfora, whom I found in the gym, will leave a hoop worn basketball and a well-used catcher's mitt to two Juniors who would aspire to his greatness. Betty McCarthy and Virginia Kotseas, found in their private lock- ers in the girls, locker room, will leave ensembles number 34 and 40 to any poorer dressed Juniors. Dick Dymek and Al jozefowski were washing their white sweaters-with the red stripes-and after much persuasion, will leave them for two Page Forty-eight Nancy Anderson, Class Testatrix underclassmen to be used as their trade marks. My problem was still unsolved, so I scurried over to the other building. As I dodged the trafiic, I wished I were Beverly Goskie, who un- selfishly willed her long legs to some Sophomore who has home room 99 and room 55, first period. I met Bob Johnsongwalking, toofand he said he had already left his famed auto to the Princeton Auto Museum in High School of Gommerce,s name. Henry Rand was in room 65. He'd like to leave similar famed lingers to future Ofhce Practice students. I reached the 70 fioor a second too late, Bobby Matson had just dove into the bubbler. He said the water was too much to resist. Dick Barrette and Gloria Fernandez were sitting opposite each other in room 81 grin- ning. They plan to leave their beautiful smiles to four or five toothpaste companies who want increased sales, Rita Rondeau and Ann Mc- Grath were plotting political campaigns for one to become first woman President of the United States. They were up on the 90 floor. Then I saw Pauline Beauchesne, and shefll leave her ability to climb through keyholes to prove she is even smaller tha' she looks. It then dawned on me that I had gathered quite a few of our goods and chattels, so I decided to go back to The Mercury office and write the will. To Mr. Casey we leave our many thanks for the sincere guidance and understanding he has given us during the past four years. To Mr. Tobin we leave our appreciation for his interest in our senior class and his help in all our senior activities. To Mr. Manning we leave our thanks and our promise that he need no longer listen to our ex- cuses about why we were where we shouldn't have been and weren't where we should have been. To Miss Anderson and Miss O'Gonnell we leave two new attendance books to replace the ones we have amply filled for them. To Miss O'Leary and Miss Burdette we be- queath a record, which plays f'Any new jobs? Any new jobs? over and over again, to remind them of our many trips to the placement office where we always ask that same question. To Mr. Osborn we leave the hope that his future U. S. History students will bear up as well as we have under the strain of those heavy books. To Mr. McAleer, Mr. Oakes, and Mr. Sleeper we leave a recommendation that the MOS studios be erected to replace MGM. To Miss Jerome we leave a mechanical in- strument that counts out 35 words to an inch so that she can meet all Mercury deadlines. To Mr. Neary and Mr. Creamer we leave the envy of all the girls in '50-B for Mr. Neary's place in the veterans ofiice and for Mr. Creamer's much publicized good fortune. To Miss Bosworth and Miss Phillips we leave our aches and pains to be distributed evenly among the Sophomores. To Mr. Davidson we leave three Bob Cousys, two Frank Oftrings, and an Ed Kowalski. To Mr. Foley we leave more Ericksons and Brennans. To the Junior Class-we leave you the honor of taking our place as seniors. May you have as wonderful a year as we have had. It will go by fast, so enjoy it. To the Sophomores-we leave you the hope that law classes will bring forth many aspiring young lawyers. To the entering Sophomores-we leave you all the corny jokes that go with being the youngest class in the student body, and the bookkeeping accounts that will never balance the Hrst time. Franny Horgan leaves his miniature white house to the next President. Ann-Marie Campbell, whose theme song could easily be When You Speak With Your Eyesf' will leave a book of lessons on how to. Swamie Al Fitzgerald leaves his power to know when the ball is coming to center field. Joan Gnecco leaves her glass slipper to a Cinderella of the Junior class who can Ht into her size 2. Jerry Groccia leaves his sadness. He feels very bad for all the broken-hearted misses who'll miss Jerry, Uerry says.j Virginia Lindquist and Barbara Michaelian leave the job of editing the Senior Directory to any Juniors with patience and fortitude-they say they'll need it. Ann and Mary Quinn leave a contradiction to the Toni ads. Twins are supposed to look alike. Gloria Reed leaves her well-used book entitled H1001 Excuses and Ways to Talk Yourself Out of Trouble. Richard Mason leaves his retirement benefits. Lillian Miskavich leaves her wonderful person- ality. She'll take her beautiful voice along with her, and with it goes '50-B's best wishes for her future success. Claire O'Donnell, Christine Larson, and Marilyn Applebaum leave their shorn locks to any mem- bers of the faculty who might like a toupee.
