It is on this, our Class Day, that we wish to accentuate the happiness that has been ours during the past four years. Within these walls American youth has unconsciously woven together home and school, forming the fabric of a progressive generation. Gratifying indeed is the fact that our beloved principal, discreet in his guidance of each and every student, has deservedly won the praise and admiration of all with whom he comes in contact. To say but a word of thanks is in small measure the departing gesture we make to our leader, Mr. Andrews. Unreservedly also do we extend appreciation to the faculty members who have cease- lessly devoted their time, patience, and understanding that we may be the recipients of the necessary guidance which will enable us to grasp opportunities in industry, business, or other work, and reap success. Possessed with the knowledge of future unforeseen difiiculties, life's road has been simplified by the toil and sacrifices which afforded us an education essential to self- preservation. Our formative years of learning made possible the realization of the con- fidence that has been placed in us that we may elevate ourselves to a status which might be symbolic of the wishes of our parents. In words we express gratitude, in our hearts we carry the spark of forwardness that will someday compensate those hardships endured by our mothers and fathers. And so, friends of the Class of 1940-A, again I welcome you to these Class Day exercises, and may I offer sincere thanks to all those who have in any way made this day so memorable in our lives. I24l fllall S Si ll I S 1713 Il 17 ID F' l 9P4r0P-Al Frances Alisauskas 't In the history shelves of the great libraries of the country, there is to be placed shortly a new set of books, the History of the High School of Commerce, and, as a member of this class, I have been elected to prepare an account of the principal events and notable happenings for the Class of 1940-A. While searching diligently through the stacks of old Rec- ords, and racking my brain for further enlightenment, many were the happy memories that came to me. It was in February, 1936, that the Class of 1940-A regis- tered at the High School of Commerce, the largest class in the history of the school up to that date. The students seemed par- ticularly bright, and promised unusually well. After a few days of confusion they became settled and adapted themselves very easily to their new surroundings. Of course some of us made the usual mistakes of finding ourselves in the wrong classrooms, or of asking some Senior if she were going to Business Ethics. Soon, however, technical matters having been settled we began to take stock of our surroundings. The new broadcasting system had just been installed. Each day we eagerly awaited the news bulletins of The Man of the Hour, Mr. Andrews. Among the social events of the Freshman year many of us enjoyed Pinafore, pre- sented by the Euterpean Musical Society and the Ghost Train, realistically offered by the Blackfriars. On Memorial Day the whole student body assembled at the Municipal Auditorium--an inspiring and never-to-be-forgotten occasion. We also enjoyed our first School Trip to Cape Cod--a real Commerce Day-and the memory of it will always be the happiest of memories of our four years at Commerce. - Sophomore year found most of us within the portals of Commerce again. Our deserters' ranks were filled by others, and we soon began to pursue the uneven tenor of our way. With Richard Sauncy as President, life began to assume some sort of order, Helen Roy was chosen Vice-Presidentg Pauline Forslund, Secretaryg and William Sarsfield, Treasurer. A funereal shroud twice encompassed the school as Dr. Albert C. Erickson and Miss Grace M. Lombard departed from our midst for that dim, mysterious land in the Great Beyond. However, the rigors and strains of daily routine were offset by the hilarious pres- entation of Love in the Mist by the Blackfriars and by the musical operetta, the Mikado, offered by the Euterpeans. Both were stellar performances and were attended enthusiastically by the student body. Last but not least, the annual excursion of the Commercites, under the guidance of Mr. Andrews and members of the faculty, brought us via the S. S. Steel Pier to Gloucester. l25l On our return to school in the fall, the Commerce High Football Team and the Girls' Hockey Team gathered new laurels in the winning of the Inter-High Champion- ships in their respective fields. Our school paper, the Mercury, was awarded the All American Highest Award by the National Scholastic Association. Our school won the Biggest News Essay Contest in which we, as Sophomores, duly participated. junior year-February 1938-found us ready to embark upon another voyage of new conquests and discoveries. Class elections were again held and the following officers chosen: President, joseph Kairisg Vice-President, Pauline Forslundg Secretary, Frances Alisauskasg and Treasurer, William Nelson. The Euterpean Musical Society presented as one of its notable achievements Pa- tience, in which Varti Davidian and Ralph Biscotti gave impressive performances. jane Eyre, a Blackfriar performance, was another highlight in our junior year. Again the grim Reaper paid a visit to the High School of Commerce and took from our midst Miss jane G. Waite, Miss Anjennette Newton, and Miss Florence N. Flagg, three beloved teachers whom we can never forget. Mitch jaworski and Connie Daucunas played major roles in leading the Com- merce Basketball Team to new victories and the Inter-High Basketball Championship. The Girls' Basketball Team, not to be outdone, captained by Dorothy Elliot, cap- tured the Inter-High Championship, and so ended 1938. The much awaited Senior year at last arrived. Political activities again held sway as class elections were held for the last time. Eugene Gardiner was elected President, Frances Alisauskas, Vice-President, Dorothy Aldrin, Secretary, and William Nelson, Treasurer. Sylvia Lapp and Richard Whelan enacted their individual roles exceptionally well as the Blackfriars' play The First Lady received a tremendous ovation from the stu- dent body. Not to be dauntecl, however, the Euterpeans presented The Chimes of Normandy and received much praise from a well pleased audience. For a change the class chose to have its last picnic at The Weirs, New Hampshire. This proved to be a heartily enjoyed occasion. September brought news of new losses to our school in the deaths of two of our faculty members, Mt. Charles H. jordan and Miss Pauline A. Smith. Only a few hours now remain until the Class of 1940-A passes forever into the annals of history. It has been an often-discussed topic among literary lights, whether past or future joys are sweeter. We cannot foretell the future, we can conjecture, and we can dream, but that is all. But we do know the past, its joys and sorrows, its hardships and rewards, its new experiences and the friendships made, and my wish today is-may all the memories we gather in our future be as happy as the memories of our four years at Commerce. E261 CLASS 0IlATION, 1940-A Joseph J. Kairis PRESENT DAY DEMOCRACY I Mr. Andrews, parents, friends, and fellow-classmates: As we complete our high school course here amid peaceful surroundings and with bright hopes of future accomplishments, it might be fitting to pause for a brief view of a distant scene in sharp contrast. The entire continent of Europe is engaged in a sad conflict. Hundreds of men are losing their lives daily, and countless others are suffering painful wounds of bayonet, shot, and shell. Why this needless slaughter? Why must man fight fellow-man? Is it because aggressive leaders decide that I warfare is the surest way to power and dictatorship? Is it the ever present fear of domination by rival neighbors that impels to ruthless violence? Whatever the cause, the great mass of people, inarticulate and bewildered, are the real victims. Here in the United States, the pleople voice their opinions freely and vigorously. Their word is law. They rule! If t ey want war, war it is. If they do not, there is no force strong enough to drive them into it. They are supreme! In Europe, conscription is the rule, here, the exception. In Europe, men are required to give two of the best years of their lives to military training. Here soldiering is an avocation, not a vocation. Men live in closest harmony, regardless of race, color, or creed. There is no furtive or suspicious glance for the misguided individual who does not whole-heartedly approve our form of government. Ours is a broad tolerance and a kindly one. This country was founded by able men of wide vision who built for the future and not just for the present. They cherished an ideal of government with jealous care, counting no sacrifice too great for the advancement of democracy. Their unselfish devotion and steadfast faith present a challenge which we gladly accelpt. Ours is the task of preserving the great principles for which they labored. Two great documents which they left us, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, embody these principles. The Declaration of Independence declares: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its founda- tion on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them, shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. In the unsettled world of today these words take on new dignity and worth. They strengthen and sustain us in these troubled times. May they inspire us to guard well our great heritage of democracy. As we review our many blessings in this great land, we are not unmindful of immediate benefits which affect our daily lives. I express now, for the Class of 1940, warm gratitude to all whose solicitude and good will have enabled us to reach this present goal. I27l LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT 0F TIIE CLASS 0F 1940-A Yvette R. Sarazin When it becomes necessary for the members of a class to dissolve the bonds which have united them throughout their high school days, it is only fitting and proper that they close their affairs in a legal manner. Therefore, we the members of the Class of 1940-A, real- izing that we shall soon depart from this high school, being of sound mind, and possessing happy memories, do hereby make this our last will and testament, making void all others pre- ceding it. To Mr. Andrews, our faithful friend and trusty adviser, we leave a sincere appreciation for his fatherly advice, and our ever- lasting gratitude for the inspiration he has been to us during our stay at Commerce. As we look back over the four joyful years which have flown so swiftly, we realize that had it not been for you, our beloved parents, this happy occasion could never have been made possible. For your great sacrifices, your love, and devo- tion, we humbly offer our thanks. To our principal, Mr. Andrews, who has earned our unend- ing respect and devotion, we are grateful. To our teachers, who, by their kind, and expert guidance, have prepared us ably for the future, we give sincere thanks. Now as our high school careers draw to a close, we hope that our future attain- ments will always reflect favorably upon our school, and that this day will forever remain a cherished memory. Again, I say to you, a hearty welcome. l4l l CLASS IIISTIJRY 0F 1940-B Eleanor L. Dagilis PROLOGUE I cannot here state whether this play is a comedy, tragedy or farce, it is too pregnant with joy and sadness, with heart- breaks and dreams come true. Let us rather say it is a fascinat- ing summary of the activities and accomplishments of the Class of 1940-B. The time is September, 1936, a bright sunny day, and our setting is laid in the ancient structure of what was once the English High School. Strange faces and foreign rooms greeted this bewildered group, but eventually the environment became dear and familiar. Young and inexperienced as they were, the cast early ven- tured to gain laurels for Commerce and emerged victorious. For example, Josephine Popowicz, jerry Parker, Shumune Samuel, Rita Sullivan, Velly Mattei and Doris Berglund aided the Hockey team and the Basketball team to victory. The boys, namely Tony Dagostino, Lincoln Hallstrom, and john F. Labossiere, not to be outdone, displayed their athletic ability by capturing the inter-high football and cross-country championships. The Blackfriars Dramatic Society produced Love in a Mist, a gay comedy which made the timorous freshmen sit up and take notice. The Euterpeans demonstrated their musical talent by the frolicsome presentation of Pinafore. This is certainly a promising beginning for the play our class is creating. ACT I As the curtain rises on September, 1937, a more sophisticated group now emerges on the stage, for our cast is further augmented by the somewhat superior Junior High students. Franklin Labossierre, the leading man in the role of Class President, retains his position for three successive acts. Each and every individual visualizes a long, labo- rious life of hard, sincere study, but soon we are captivated by the exciting night football games, the fast-moving UQ girls' basketball games and the Mercury-like track feats. Why shouldn't we be exultant in our praise when our teams bring wreaths of laurels galore to hang in the Commerce Hall of Fame? ' But suddenly, Death with her sinister, grasping hand avariciously reaches out to seize our beloved friends, Miss Anjennette Newton, Miss jane Waite, and Miss Florence N. Flagg! They are gone but never forgotten. lif2l We get back to our regular routine. The Euterpeans present the delightful comic opera, Patience The Blackfriars, in turn, give us jane Eyre. Everybody enjoyed a thrilling and impressive spectacle when the entire student body took part in the Memorial Day exercises at the Municipal Auditorium, an experience we renew yearly, but which time will never blot from our memory. Although but mere sophomores, we did not bide our time to participate in the gala proms. On the contrary, we entered into the social swim quite ardently, if not grace- fully. The joyous trip to Plymouth on the S. S. Steel Pier proved what a dauntless spirit our class had. Thus, amid much applause, the curtain falls on the First Act. ACT II Curtain going up! Curtain going up! Lights, action, play! In Act II our cast really becomes organized. For oiiicers we choose: President, F. J. Qbetter known as Butch j Labossiereg Vice-President, Doris Lindberg, Secretary, Margaret Kapesisg Treasurer, William Parker. The scenes have changed very little, and the time is a year later. Somewhat older and more sedate, the students take to their Civics and Law classes with enthusiasm. A few daring members, who learned that a minor can break an unwritten contract, slyly tried to get a soda without paying for it. Perhaps that accounts for the dishpan hands amidst our group! The convivial functions include the Euterpeans' entertaining performance of The Chimes of Normandy. Here we discover Marion Anusbigian, a gifted singer, who later plays a prominent part as Class Vocalist. Again the Blackfriars achieve success. This time it is novel, different. The play, First Lady, reveals the Barrymores and Bernhardts of Commerce High in the persons of Frank Zagunis and Margaret Kapesis, respectively. At the Britomart-Assembly prom we tripped the light fantastic until dawn. In our athletic activities is it necessary to repeat that the girls won the Hockey and Basketball championships, that the Indoor Track team, Golf, and Basketball teams vic- toriously unfurled the banners of the Blue and the Gold? Laughter, gaiety and song monopolize the scene, when on june 4 we merrily en- train for the Weirs in New Hampshire. Dancing, bowling, boating and swimming were the main features that tended to make this a memorable day. With a burst of applause the curtain is rung down, obliterating the second act from sight, but not from memory. Acr 111 h The curtain is slowly parted for the last time, not to be lowered until graduation day. l43l The prominent members of the cast are those who have maintained a Horace Mann rating. They are Dorothy Slovin, Eunice Jacobson, Martha Mantyla, Velly Mattei, Valerie Roche, Margaret Kapesis, Doris Lindberg, Alice Argosky, Pasque Gulia, Ber- gitta Erickson, Eunice Lindstrom, Elaine Erickson, Pauline Hughes, Eleanor Dagilis, Thaddeus Rodowicz and Christie Terpo. Other leading roles are taken by the class officers: President, Franklin Labossiereg Vice-President, Doris Lindberg, Secretary, Mar- garet Kapesis, Treasurer, Robert Daly. Another feather in our caps was the fact that three girls, instead of the usual one, were present at the D. A. R. convention at Boston. The lucky three selected were Doris Lindberg, Margaret Kapesis and Eleanor Dagilis, The Euphemia Debating Society battled verbally with the Boys' Assembly in a lively debate. The boys, after a hard fight, won. Can it be that the girls who had naturally been successful the two previous years decided to let the boys taste the sweet- ness of victory just this once? Again tragedy strikes our little band, when three of our beloved faculty are taken from us. Mr. C. H. Jordan, teacher of Bookkeeping, Miss Pauline Smith, teacher of History and Civics, and Mr. Francis X. Curley, Stenography and Typewriting teacher, have departed from this world, but their memory ever lingers on. Ever Onward is the motto of the Boys' Track, Hockey, and Football teams and the Girls' Hockey team as again they repeat their splendid accomplishments. Good luck and best wishes to the promising Golf and Tennis teams who hope to again win the championship this year. High honors and acclamations of praise should be extended to Lawrence Markey, editor of the Mercury, and the entire Mercury staff for providing us with the finest paper possible. Commerce, after retaining Hrst place in the Big News Essay contest in 1938 and 1939, graciously stepped aside for Classical High in the year 1940. Our play cannot end here, for in the future we anticipate the Blackfriars play, The Barrets, the Euterpeans' production of the Pirates of Penzance and our frolicsome Senior trip. Our Senior days are the Sunset Days of school life. Things begin to take a more serious aspect as we visualize ourselves quakingly receiving our diplomas, and then bravely venturing forth into a cold world. But in the stars it is foretold that the Class of 1940-B shall bravely march forth and conquer. Let us, one and all, make this prediction become a realization. ' CURTAIN I 44 l CLASS 0llA'l'ION, l940-B UNSEEN HORIZONS Frank Zagunis We are come, this day, to the brow of the hill of knowl- edge. We pause on the crest and look across the plains to the t hills rising in the distance. From beyond the farthest hill, the smoke of industry tells us that others have gone before and we who follow must walk well-worn paths toward the distant horizon. Behind us other youths are surging forward to take the places we now occupy. We must move on-but where? Toward the smoke of an already crowded city where many hands anxiously await a single task to fill? Toward the plains that have been drained dry and are blowing away with each shifting wind? Toward the hills that are catacombed by men who burrow to find and mine their wealth? ' We must decide-now. Where are we going? What are we going to do? Slowly our heads bow, our eyes close. There seems nothing left for us to do but wait. Across the sea, age-old governments topple and fall. The polities of every land feel the force of abrupt changes. Regimented puppets serve each whim of usurpers of liberty to whom youth is but a pawn in the games of state. And here we stand, hesitant, confused. We have stopped our forward surge, for though we feel the urge to serve, though we are anxious to progress and carry our share of progress, the physical frontier is hidden from us by the thousands who have gone before. They have grown old in waiting, discouraged in longing. , We are living in a realistic age-realistic enough to realize that the promise of a place in the world is only a promise. They were promises-golden promises, to those who went before us. But to the others still seeking their fulfillment, there is only doubt and despair. As we view their fate, we hesitate to go on. Then in the midst of our confusion, from the One who never leaves us, comes the word: And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams and your young men shall see visions. Now, more glorious than the dawn that it brings, we see new horizons bursting in splendor on the eyes of the soul of youth. From this newly unveiled land we take our courage, renew our strength, and establish our faith and hope in our land and in ourselves. God has given us the urge to surge forward. We have been called upon l45l to enter new fields of endeavor, filled with greater opportunities for service to man- kind. The benefits of untold discoveries in science are ours to find and use and bring to the use of all. This is our new frontier, for ours is the vision of youth, ours the unseen horizon. Already from our midst the call has singled out men and women for service. Television has dazzled, aereonautics has lured, the chemistries have fascinated hungry minds, growing minds to whom the unknown is food. Minds that have tasted and know that learning is good, but good only as it is used for the advancement of a just and rightful cause. These minds must not be soiled by the isms of the world. Our heritage must be kept pure-and we will fight with all our knowledge to keep it unstained. ' ' May we be granted new strength and faith. Too many have tried before and failed. There is no longer time for another generation of failures. The past, present and future are' too closely knit to be separated by even an atom of time. Now we consider it only proper that we should bring our affairs to a close in a legal manner before passing out. We, the Class of 1940-B, realizing that our time is short and that we are about to depart from this happy life at the High School of Commerce, and being fully possessed of sound mind, memory and understanding, do make, publish and declare this our last will and testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills. I Our effects which fate has bestowed, and which, by our natural talents, we have acquired, we dispose of as follows: Item I: To Mr. Tobin, we leave an essay on How to Make Seniors Pay Their Class Dues. Item II: To Mr. Casey, we leave a book written by a famous psychologist on The Problem Child. Item III: To the entire faculty, our sincere appreciation for the patience, friendship, and understanding they have generously given us throughout our four years. Item IV: To our beloved mothers and fathers, whose sacrifice and toil has in a large measure made this occasion possible, we give our grateful and heartfelt thanks with the hope that our lives from this day forth may reflect all honor to them, and our achievements bring them sunshine and happiness. Frank Zagunis leaves oratorical instructions on How to Hold Your Audience Spellboundf' Mary Burke bequeaths her personality to the first one who asks this charming Miss for it. Mary Caldbeck leaves one of her photographs to the school, representing the type of beauty of the girls of the 40-B Class. Franklin Labossiere .leaves his presidential dignity and his affable personality to his successor. Eleanor Backstrom leaves her talkative nature to someone who can use it to a better advantage. Tony Dagostino passes on his athletic prowess to some future football or hockey star. Marguerite Berglund leaves to members of the Debating Society her ability to argue. ' Valerie Roche leaves her shorthand ability to anyone capable of writing 160 words a minute. Ralph Biscotti leaves his fatherly advice to all undeveloped maestros of Commerce. Helen Hirshberg leaves her place in front of the mirror downstairs at one o'clock every day to some junior who will be able to use this position to good advantage in beautifying herself. l48l Dorothy Howard leaves, and has consented to part with, her pleasing blush. Evelyn Lawler sorrowfully leaves her excellent memory and knowledge of World History, as well as United States History, to anyone interested in the subject. To all needy pupils of the High School of Commerce of the future, we do give and bequeath a very considerable amount of strictly personal property located in an imaginary place in the office of the Principal. The call has been broadcast frequently for this property, and our teachers claim they have evidence that the property was delivered as required, and they further have evidence, from class room results, that said personal property was not returned to the owners. This property consists of an indeterminate number of ears which were sep- arated from us in the fulfillment of the happily worded, though quoted, request of Mr. Andrews, Please lend me your ears! And regarding this legacy to future Commerce pupils, may we express the hope that these ears may be used to better advantage than when they graced the heads of the 40-B's. Item X: All the rest and residue of said pledges that are left over we direct to be set aside to help build a tunnel for Building Number 5 to assure ourselves that our grand- children will not suffer from colds. And now our Class Will draws to a close. In this, the last will and testament of the Class of 1940-B, we must not forget to bequeath to our most faithful friend the most valuable thing we have, though it is intangible instead of material. This friend has watched over us, sometimes with pride, sometimes with real anxiety, since we en- tered Commerce. He has given freely of his time and thought in the building of our lives, doing everything to insure our success. And so, to you, Mr. Andrews, our beloved Principal and friend, we leave the assurance that we shall take with us into the future the memory and the realization of your affection and your devotion-a memory that shall keep us steady and true and help us to be all that you would have us be.
