There is one outside actlyity in connection w ith most Hlgh Schools whlch demands more hard consistent work than perhaps any other but yet which glves the sllghtest opportunity for really dlsplaying the requl s1te efforts Whlch have been expended by 1ts upholders However there IS probablv no other activity w h1ch has greater infiuence on the partlcipators and which helps more to mark them out from all their fellow students as better fitted for future life than Debate College officlals give precedence to High School debaters over any others for the force of character whlch developed by appearance before an audlence to uphold the school 1n de bating Soon after the openlng of thls school year consequently the Debate Club was organized and active work was begun For several weeks meet lngs were held and p1 actlce debates were given This year too Wooster High School debaters had a new mentor Mr S Garton Churchlll who was one of Oh1o Wesley an s best debaters last year Under his able dlrection the debates were prepared for the prl1m1nary tryouts at which time slxteen people were chosen After a few weeks work by these people the final try outs were held at whlch time the faculty chose eight students who were to represent the High School ln the Debate But the work had only begun for now the negotlatlons for the triangle Alliance a triangle which had been broken off a few years ago were com pleted and the question for the debates was chosen The question agreed upon was Resolved that the U S Government should own and operate the railroads The teams then settled down to the hardest and perhaps the least appreclated part of the work namely the preparatlons For several weeks they read and studied books and magazine articles they have corresponded with recognized authorltles to get their opinions on the question then they by means of this material prepared thelr dlscus sions The first of the two debates scheduled was the triangle with Ashland and Mansfield Due to much sickness the debaters were forced to postpone thls for one week Th1S debate took place March fifteenth The Wooster Affirmative team met the Mansfield N egatlve on the home floor and the Wooster N egative met he Ashland Affirmative at Ashland Wooster s teams were up to par in ab1l1ty and arguments but through some irony of fate they lost However the mere losing of the Debate does not mean so much after all when considered from the real standpoint of the value of Debate as Dr A O Becker who pronounced the invocation sald It does not mat ter so much whether you w1n or lose your debate as It does whether you win or lose in llfe Then too Wooster showed that she knew how to lose gracefully or how she could meet defeat and this reflects to her credit 09 7 V 7 Y . i , . 7 Y . 1 . . 1 . , , x - - v . HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA An orchestra composed of high school students was again organized at the beginning of this school year It consists of a number of first and second violins two French horns three cornets two clarinets two saxa phones and a piano Due to the fact that the High School band which played at a number of football and basketball games took some of the at tention of the director and of some players there was not quite as much in terest taken in this group of musicians as usual But the faithful ones with their director Mr Frederick haxe met nearly every Thursday for practice When the much talked about operetta In Old Louisiana was given a se has besides this shown its ability in sew eral other entertainments this year It also entertains hopes of prowiding music at the Debate clashes here and at other such important events as the Class Play and Commencement At he present time between fifty and seventy grade pupils together with a few high school students are I'6C8lX1l'1g instruction either in private or in classes from the music supervisor on the instruments which they feel capable of handling therefore the outlook is fine for a more balanced and larger orchestra the coming year A great deal of credit should be given to Mr Frederick for the effort and patience which he has exercised in making this phase of activity a success ROGER CLOUSE 25 71 .
