' : l l ' L, . , K CLASS HISTORY From north and south east and west came a throng of br1ll1ant look mg speclmens of humanlty Smlllng' they plodded along the weary road untxl they reached thelr destlnatlon Here they knocked and the Doors of Knowledge opened unto them and they shyly entered to be DTISOHGTS for four years So our hlgh school career began on the 8th of September 1914 As we went down the hall to our various assembly rooms the upper class men looked at us and smlled and called us green We never took th1s as any dlscredlt and showed them there were other green thlngs b6Sld6S us for floatmg from the tower were green rlbbons and on the roof a green 18 made what was before a maroon and gold 16 look pale and wlthered We were ln for all athletlcs and showed so much school sp1r1t that the upper-classmen looked on wlth open mouths and chapel speakers bald us many comollments We dldn t Wdlt to be nushed but started ln havmg roasts and good tlmes Then we ended the year Wlth a blg DIC me and left Wooster Hlgh School wlth a credlt card Wlth elght holes 1n It IH one pocket and a sandwlch 1n the other Our Sophomore year was even more successful the newness h nd worn olT and our sho s no longer squeaked We were rapldly ascendlng the Steps of Knowledge and had a chance to look down on a class as the Sophs the year before had looked down on us Th1s vear we organ 1Z9d and elected Don Slutz as our first presldent Then our first class soclal was held at the home of Arwllda Plm and the varlous cases began After th1s class soclals were numerous and we gave all the teachers a chance to see what a wonderful class had ventured lnslde the walls Then too we had left our old freshman color to the new fresh 19S and these freshles llke all others were esneclally fitted to the wearm o the green. Scarlet and Black now became the predommatlng colors on the hlghest pomt of the tower at class games We are as lndus trlous as ever ln our studles even though we waded through geometry knee deep and rode through Caesar unless our Ford w s kldnapped or ran awav from us Wlth two years gone and two to come we left Wooster Hlgh for a few months rest The first lmportant event of the Junlor year was our se its ln the Study Room There were so many of us that we occumed more than our share of seats and so those who dld not have the necessary slxteen cred lts were transferred to some other room Then we got our class pms and everybody was snorting a mn or rmg We also had several acrobatlc performers 1n our bunch They emoyed walklng along the hlghest peaks of the roof and burmng every thlng they saw wh1ch d1d not belong there They even astomshed the Dubllc so much one nlght that they had the fire department the pollce force and half the nonulatlon of Wooster destroylng' our beautlful lawn Th1s was the nlght that they burned the Sonhomore colors a daring feat that no other class dared venture x s ' ' . . . . . v I ' Y . . . . CLUB The Girls Q lee Club this vear has follow ed the s in e course of former years The Club was organized early in the year with about sixty mem bers On March 8th the Clrls and Boys Clee Clubs gave a Joint entertain ment in the opera house The proceeds were used to pay for the new pait of the program consisted of musical numbers furnished by the Glc Clubs The second part was a one act play A Pair of Vases given by a number of High School students and coached by Miss Revennaugh The entertainment was a fine success and many people said it was the best that had ever been given by the High School We are especially grateful to our director lVIr Mtynard who has instructed us throughout the vear and to our pianist Maman Williams Although we regret that we will lose the benlors we feel sure that next year the members of the lower classes will respond to the call and that the Clee Club w1ll be as great '1 success as it has been this V6dl Melba Williams ,, y' 4 K . 2' C Q 'fl lbxv I . safe 'W . ' I k 4 THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION As in former ye xrs the Athletic Association was agaln organized at the beginning of the school year Athletics for the year nineteen eighteen has excelled that of any pre ceding year in 1tS SD1l'lt and its opportunities Not only ID the spirit of good fellowship has this past year been a success but also in a financ1al xx ay the year has turned out fairly well Nearly every pupil of every class was an active member of the association during the past year and everyone has appreciated the extremely low prices of season tickets which the lndustry of the associa tion secured In the first place much needed athletic equipment had to be pur chased as the equlpment used the year before had nearly all been stolen during the summer from the athletic property room As track was At the start of the football season a prlze which was to be a brown and blue sweater was offered by the association to the person selling the most season tickets for football When the contest closed Art Franks and Fritz Derr were tied for first place and the association voted to give each a sweater Although some years more games have been won all are forced to admit that the teams turned out thru the able instruction of Coaches Lccles and Hauenstem are on a level with any high school teams in the state OFFICERS President William Hlmes Vice President George Buchelt Secretary Marian Williams Treasurer Miss Kean Faculty Manager Mr Funck Property Manager Paul Batdorf f started this year for the first time new equipment had to be purchased for it. f,..a FOOTBALL At the begmmng of the 1917 football season those who were 1nte1 ested ln Wooster Hlgh were doubtful of the success of the team that would represent her upon the gr1d1ron Nevertheless the season opened w1th 1 great deal of enthuslasm on the part of the football squad and the student body ln general At the very beglnnmg of the season the expres slon Are you golng to try out for football? could be heard from the l1DS of almost every boy IH Hlgh School The answer to thls questlon was evldent on the nlght of the first regular practlce when a squad of about twenty five appeared Wh1Ch Coach Eccles could choose from Though not emlnently successful durlng the entlre season the boys made a fine record consldermg the very small number that had ever played football Several of the old players had graduated w1th the Class of 1917 and a great number of those who were agaln el1g1ble d1d not return to school and thus a new aggregatlon was called upon to fight for the honors of W H S There were but three letter men back these belng Slutz Mlller and Batdorf and only the same number that had ever played anywhere before thus lt was a very green bunch that practlced the few weeks Alllance was scheduled for the first game on September 22 there and thus the locals went down to defeat 32 to 0 due to the lack of experlence and Dractlce But th1S game dld the team good for on September 29 Ash land came over and Wooster got her scormg machme started and reg lstered 15 nomts holding the vlsltors scoreless Th1s gave the team con Celt ln themselves and they thought any more defeats were lmposslble for them but when the team went to Orrvllle the next Saturday It was the 13th of October and an unlucky day for the Brown and Blue team and Orrvllle won 13 to 0 before a large crowd wlth a great number of Wooster spectators present On the next Frlday the old Jlnks was st1ll on the team when Dover played here Batty fumbled two punts whlch Dover recovered for touchdowns and the Brown and Blue agaln went down to defeat 12 to 0 The next Saturday the team journeyed to Medlna accom panled by a mob of rooters Here Wooster bumped lnto a much heavler team than thelr own, on one of the muddlest fields played on thls season, 63 xxx f ' 1 wx . 4 ' 'X - A I l y ss XX, Q L: , 'iw 9 :lr--Q J u ,v V, ', K 1 1 f M 1 l ' -5 xl f X , '. , 5 . p ' r 'X' 1 l ' A -', ,-1' . .' , A ' 3 -, 1 V l WV, ,V.:,:n.,a, I . . Y 1 Y f K but Morrlson was able to get away for a touchdown and we won 6 to 0 On Frlday afternoon of November 2 we went up on the h1ll to meet the Academy All were anxious to w1n thls game as lt will be the last year that there w1ll be an Academy But although the Brown and Blue were on the goal l1ne several tlmes they fumbled the ball due to the bad condl tlon of the field and the game resulted 1n a 0 to 0 txe The next Saturday tound the team at Mansfield where they bumped lnto the largest team of all the season But Batty managed to Sllp over for a touchdown on a speclal fake play he had around the rlght end and thus saved the day for W H S After the touchdown Donley added another polnt to the score by klcklng one of the most beautlful goals klcked all season and Wooster won 7 to 0 Masslllon came over to Wooster on November 17 Wooster had thought of gettlng even for the defeat MHSSIIIOH gave us over there last year but they were too strong for us and won 20 to 0 Although MHSSIIIOH won 20 to 0 thls IS the lowest score they were ever held to by the local team On November 24 came the blg trxp to New Phlladelphla We had heard that they had beaten Canton and MRSSIIIOH and were thus countlng themselves champions of northeastern Ohlo But we went down Wlth the determ1nat1on of taklng th1s t1tle away from them The Brown and Blue team worked llke a machlne and at the start of the game when Mlller got away for about a forty yard run It looked as lf we would WIH But near the end of the first half Gross the1r star end pulled a forward pass out of the a1r for a touchdown Wlth but two mlnutes to play the score st1ll stood 7 to 0 and then the defense work of our team weakened and they scored two more touchdowns w1nn1ng 19 to 0 On November 29 Thanksglvmg Day the Brown and Blue played her last game of the season agalnst one of the strongest Alumnl teams that has ever played on Wooster s grldlron The old hlgh school stars won 14 to 0 before the largest crowd of the season The followlng IS an estlmatlon of the players that upheld the Brown md blue on the grldlron made an excellent man for hls posltlon Hls work at quarter back showed excellent head work and tact Coach Eccles showed hlS appreclatlon for Batty by appoxntlng him captaxn to serve IH the place of Frlck captaln elect who d1d not return to school Batty was wlthout doubt one of the most valuable men on the team and he dlstrlbutes but 120 pounds over 5 feet 4 lnches of frame He IS a Semor and wlll be greatly mlssed on next year s eleven DONALD SLUTZ manager and rlght half back Don IS the last of the famous famlly of Slutz Brothers who have filled the rlght half back pos1t1on on the hxgh school team for the past mne years H1s work at that pos1t1on IS on a level wlth that of elther of hls brothers He has the envlable reputatlon of belng the best ground galner on the team Don was a man to be feared by h1s opponents and to be relled upon by his captam for any necessary gam He stands 5 feet 10 lnches and welghs 150 pounds He also IS a Semor EDGAR MILLER Spotty llght but exceedlngly speedy was a real star at fullback He could throw forward passes and recelve them both equally well But h1s longest su1t was mterceptmg the opposlng teams passes and runnmg them back for good gams He IS a Semor and w1ll be greatly mlssed next year Hls welght IS 145 pounds and his helght 5 feet 8 Inches f i 1 . . , n 1, .- n Y ' n . I sig' BASKETBALL When the 1918 season opened everything looked bad for the basket ball team at W H B Laptam Imhoff did not return to school md thus there was only one letter man and a couple of substltutes left from the star team of 1917 There was no Johnny Bartell this year to depend upon players in school but all were lackmg in experience After the first vseek of practice a game was played with the City team and here the fellows were all given a chance to show their ab1l1ty With the able coaching of Hauenstexn and much faithful work by the team they prepared them selves for the season Although the team did not win all their games the scores were close in all and no game was won until the last whistle The teamwork that is necessary to win was shown to be present at ill times INo one player starred but all played to make baskets with no thought of who made them Wooster High opened the season on January eighteenth and won from Mlllersburg on the local fioor 19 to 11 Mansfield lost to Wooster on January twenty fifth with a score of 40 to 35 Th1s game played on the local floor was one of the fastest and most 6XC1tlI1g' games of the season On February second we made our first out of town trip and lost at Mas lllon because of the strange floor 32 to 24 On February sixth we played our old rivals the Preps and they won on our floor 37 to 14 Dover played here next on February ninth At the end of the first half the score stood 27 to 19 and the game looked like another victory foi the Brown and Blue team but luck broke for Dover as 1n football and they won 46 to 30 The next week end Februarv 15 and 16 we had games Wlth Mans field and Ashland We had be zten Mansfield earlier 1n the season and would have beaten them easily again if they had had a referee who was square They won 40 to 28 The next night we played Ashland and won 15 to 29 69 7 be 1 W7 . ,ff Bw! iffy wi n. On February twenty second Ashland came over to Wooster to get revenge for the beatmg they got at home the week before but they went home with the short end of a 45 to 30 score The next night February twenty third found us among the hills of Holmes County Where we played Mlllersburg 1n a place they called a l1on s den Here we were robbed agaln 32 to 27 February twenty seventh we played the strong Prep team on the college floor and held them 31 to 15 a lower score than down at the Hlgh School Massillon won here 26 to 22 ln one of the cleanest and fastest games of the season On March eighth the team went to Dover to play the last game of the season The Dover Superintendent told the team when they first arrlved that thelr regular referee was away but that they had secured another good one to take h1s place He was good to Dover and they won 46 to 40 Much credit 1S due to Coach Hauenste1n for the tlme he spent and the mterest he took in the team He 1S well liked by all the students and all hope that the war will be over bv next fall so that he can return from the army in wh1ch he has enlisted and again coach the team The followmg IS Coach Hauenste1n s estlmate of the team WILLIAM HIMES Captaln and Center Th1s was h1s third and last year on the team he being the only letter man left from last year s team Great thlngs were expected of Bill and during the greater part of the season he played up to these expectations Hls magnificent work at een ter was responslble to a large extent for the team s fine showlng He wlll be a tower of strength to a college team durlng the next four years EDGAR MILLER Rlght forward Thls was Spotty s fn st year as a regular on the Basketball team but we regret that It has been h1s last because he truly was a valuable player He added many points by h1s let1c future m college PAUL BATDORF Left forward Although th1s was Batty s first year as a regular member of the Basketball team none were dlsappolnted IH h1s work His floor work and passlng were always credltable and he generally managed to throw a couple of field goals each game Determl natlon IS hlS greatest asset and he does not know what hard work IS but he IS always ready to g'1Ve his team h1s best WALTER DONLEY Left guard and Captam for next season W all know that Pete IS a born athlete He has developed into a first class guard and because of h1S great Welght and speed he has been able to hold the best forwards 1n the state to but very few baskets Whlle he always could be counted on to score several field goals because of his won derful accurate shooting He can lmprove and all Wlll no doubt say he has after h1s re1gn as captain next year RALPH SENFF Rlght guard He too was another benlor who was a stranger to Wooster basketball fans at the beginning of the sea son but soon won a place for hlmself among them Rats was not a frequent pomt gamer due however to the fact that according to lnstruc t1ons he was continually playlng under the opponents baskets breaklng up passes While he IS not credlted with w1nn1ng many games he IS cred lted wlth keeplng our opponents from w1nn1ng 70 Y ' 1 . - . , .
