V21 57 LITERARY SOCIETIES Unfortunately the llterary societies like almost everything else were very much affected by the ilu this year The b1 weekly meetlngs had to be discontinued after November At the beginning of this year quite a number of plans were made for the improving of the societies and We had many good prospects in view Probably these prospects were due to the fact that we had n1ne fully organized societles four for the boys and five for the girls The boys societies were the followlng Carthagm lan which met wlth Miss Dalrymple the Excelslor with Mr Machwart as honorary member Nonpariel meeting with Mr Mote and Mr Long enecker and the Phllalethian having Miss Revennaugh as honorary member The girls were divided into the following societies Adelphian Browning Epsilon Phi Hellenic and Ossolean The teachers as honorarv Metz Miss Bloomberg and Miss Folsom With these splendid organiza tions we could have made a great deal of progress in this work if We had not been hindered and we trust that in the future much may b accomplished IDA HERSHBERGER DEBATE The Debate Club of 1919 started under difficulties We tried several times to have meetlng that we might organize but we had a powerful enemy the Flu who thwarted all our plans At last however we had a meeting and elected Robert Hand President Leon Plasterer Vice president and Ocenla Faber Secretary and Treasurer We thought that all was well and we would have smooth sailing but alas' there came an other Ban When that was lifted we marched bravely on and called a Il'l66t1Ilg for the next week But ex en the United States Army was agalnst us for they had put our coach Mr Weber in the Cuard House After this there was another Ban and we were forced to give up hope for a Debate Club of any kind DoRoTHY MCCONNELL -.18 v . . .
