This selection was based on dependability, leadership, service and patriotism. i 1955 Girls’ and Boys’ State Representatives Anita Wolf was chosen by the Woon- socket American Legion Auxiliary as Girls' State Representative. She at- tended the Girls' State Convention in Mitchell, S. Dakota in June. Boys State Representative, spon- sored by Woonsocket's Post No. 29, was Wendell Ferguson. Wendell spent a week in Aberdeen, S. Members of the class were Mary Jo Ball, Merlyn Barstead, Mary Brewer, Robert Brown, Harriette Decker, Leon Eddy, Wendell Ferguson, Dorothy Foos, George F erst, Rodney Graham, Gordon Haugen, Louise Hines, Marilyn Hollingsworth, Jerry Klaas, Dan Moran, Patricia Mier, Bernard Olinger, Gary Ronnfeldt, Sharo'n Rumelhart, Albert Schmedt, Virginia Taylor, Deanna Thill, Robert Thompson, and Anita Wolf. Blanche Faber entered the class the second semester; Dorothy Foos and Jerry Klaas discontinued school during the first semester. Class officers were President, Deanna Thill; Vice-President, Bernard Olinger; Secretary-Treasurer, Mary Jo Ball. Class advisor was Mr. Don Trabing. Albert Schmedt was missing when the group enrolled in their Sophomore year, but two new faces appearing were Allen Hegg and Duane Pickinpaugh. This brought the enrollment of the class to twenty-four. Gordon Haugen and Duane Pickinpaugh discontinued school at the end of the first semester. Robert Thompson transferred to Hot Springs, South Dakota, during the second semester. Class officers were: President, Dan Moran; Vice-President, Leon Eddy; Secretary-Treasurer, Anita Wolf. Mr. Dale Vance served as their class advisor. Junior class enrollment was again brought up to twenty-four students. Carmen Pierce transferred from Sioux Falls; Ray Waldner, from Hill City; and Robert Thompson returned to Woonsocket High School from Wessington. During the second semester Carmen Pierce and Blanche Faber left Woonsocket High School. The Juniors elected Mary Brewer, president; Anita Wolf, vice-president and Dan Moran, secretary-treasurer. Under the direction of Mrs. Ella Korthals, class advisor, the class sponsored the 1955 Junior-Senior Prom with the theme of Under The Big Top. Wendell Ferguson was chosen Boys' Stater and Anita Wolf, Girls' Stater. The twenty-one students who enrolled as Seniors elected Wendell Ferguson class president; Ray Waldner, vice-president; Anita Wolf secretary-treasurer. Wendell Ferguson also served as Student Council President. During the year Louise Hines moved, leaving the class with a total of twenty students. Mary Brewer and Dan Moran reigned as Princess and Chief over the Kl-Yl Day festivities. Attending the royalty were Deanna Thill, Anita Wolf, Ray Waldner and Wendell Ferguson. Senior boys participating in athletics were Dan Moran, Wendell Ferguson, Ray Waldner, George Fuerst, Robert Thompson and Gary Ronnfeldt. Music soloists included Mary Jo Ball, Dan Moran, Mary Brewer and Marilyn Hollingsworth. Mary Jo Ball was a member of the Girls' Sextet; Wendell Ferguson and Dan Moran were members of the Boys' Quartet. Deanna Thill and Mary Jo Ball were baton twirlers. HI-LIFE co-editors were Mary Brewer and Anita Wolf; Merlyn Barstead edited THE REDMEN annual. Other seniors on the journalism staff were Mary Jo Ball, Harriette Decker, Marilyn Hollingsworth, Rodney Graham, Allen Hegg, Sharon Rumelhart, Deanna Thill and Ray Waldner. Anita Wolf represented W. H. S. as DAR candidate. Sharon Rumelhart was selected as Woonsocket's first Future Homemaker of Tomorrow. Father Lawrence Janus conducted the Baccalaureate services to the Seniors on May 13. Commencement exercises were held for the twenty graduating Seniors on May 14. Dr. Daniel E. Kerr, Huron College president, presented the address. Anita Wolf was named Valedictorian of the class and Marilyn Hollingsworth, Salutatorian. The class chose as their motto Enter To Learn, Depart To Serve . Class colors were coral and grey and the flower chosen was the 16 P«ony. Junior - Senior Prom and Banquet --1955 ary Brewer and Richard Parsons the Junior-Senior Prom of '55. The Big Top was the theme for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom held Friday even- ing, May 4, 1956. Ten sophomore girls acted as waitresses for the banquet. The banquet was served at 6:30 p.m. in the lunch room. Table decorations fol- lowing the circus theme. At 8:00 the Grand March was held in the audi- torium. Sophomores did the serving In gay and festive mood. Miss Audrey came in yellow; Mary Jane in crimson dressed. Glenda, Pat, and Marilyn In sapphire looked their best. In best suits were the fellows And many a pretty tie. The sight was like the rainbow. New fallen from the sky. It was in gay, ah, gay Paree They ate, chatted, and played. Petite Fifl bade us welcome; Jacques’ response was made. La belle ChlChi did a solo; Maurice his headlines read. The sextette did some singing. And Andre’s goodbyes were said. Seven girls and five boys made up the cast. They are from Left to Right, front row; Pat Parsons (Mrs. Odessa Ferguson) a wealthy woman who collects Indian relics. Marllynn Gutzmer (Betty Eastman) a breezy and talkative girl. Joan Brewster (Vicki Piper) a youthful ball of fire in her early teens. Shirley Flanders (Miss Todd) an en- ergetic and attractive woman in her 30's or 4Q's. Phyllis Baseman (Stella Piper) wife of Webster Piper. Back row: Barbara Hendrick (Jean Sterling) an attract- ive high school senior. Terry Beddow (Hal Russell) a vigor- ous, persuasive high school boy. Marion Hegg (Webster Piper) a hard working business man. John Rauch (Dudley Ferguson) who appears to be distressingly cultured and intellectual. Tom Brisbine (Andy Piper) a popular youth of seventeen. Mary Jane Ferguson (Daisy Laverne) a loud voiced, swaggering and somewhat uncultured woman of fifty, took this photograph. Band, under the direction of Mrs. Vera Miller, had one of the most active years in its recent history. At the beginning of the year the Band Boosters' Club was adopted by the P. T. A. It is now a P. T. A. committee under the chairmanship of Mr. Bob Schlicht. The Band Boosters' Club raised about $500 this year. They purchased eight new band uniforms. W. H. S. Band was invited to several homecomings. The Redmen Band was the official band at Canova's homecoming. The band was featured in Huron's Pow Wow Day and Blue and White Day in Mitchell. After football season was over, the band played and performed at various local bas- ketball games. They also played at the Pony Hills Conference Tourney in Mitchell. A music clinic was held under the direction of Mr. Thomas Ray. It was held to bene- fit the band members as they weren't able to participate in All State Band. On February 1, five instrumental soloists went to Kimball to the annual music con- test. They were Leora Ammon and Ramona Taylor, mellophone; Phyllis Baseman, clarinet; Mary Brewer and Judy Huber, saxophone. R. E. A. members were entertained by W. H. S. Band on February 11. The band was a representative of four counties. W. H. S. Band attended Harry Truman Day in Huron on April 30. The band took part in the parade led by former President Truman. Twenty-seven band members began this year and ten entered band during the year. Those entering band were Gay Baughfman, Carolyn Carver, Joyce Flanders, Dennis McCoy, Deloris Merriman, Douglas Moe, Keith Moe, Mickey Murtha, and Sharon Yegge. The last performance of the band was on May 30, when they played for Memorial Day 50 Services.
