J'lonor. l am 1957 Four poems were chosen by the annual Anthology of High School Poetry for publication. They were by: Kent Martin (Honorable mention) Christine Berry Denise Noyes Thurl Hutchins Each spring the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors an Essay Contest on Americanism. In 1957 the essays selected were: First Clinton Cushman Second Rodney Cross Third Hazel Crocker The Alumni Award, given by the Alumni to outstanding members of the senior class, was presented to James Swan and Denise Noyes. The Mrs. Barker award was presented to Denise Noyes. 1958 1 he South Paris Savings Bank chose the idea submitted by Beverly Poland for their advertisement in this Eureka. Honorable mention was given to Thurl Hutchins and Hazel Crocker. Certificates for excellence in shorthand penmanship were won by Ceraldine Cushman, Leatrice Farnum, Beverly Poland and Nadine Waterhouse. Seated: Richard Wing, and Elizabeth Hoyt. CWinter ( arnival The 11th annual W.H.S. Winter Carnival opened Thursday evening, Febru- ary 20, with a basketball game with the Alumni and a handicap game between the boys and girls. On February 22, the carnival events were held at Oak Hill. Tickets to the Carnival Ball were sold, entitling the holder to one vote for queen. The candidates were Geraldine Cushman, Beverly Poland, Nadine Wa- terhouse, Kaye Ring, and Leatrice Famum. Leatrice Famum, receiving the most votes, was elected queen; and Herbert Hatfield, Jr., was chosen king by the vote of the school. They were crowned at the Carnival Ball by last year’s king and queen, Stanley Newell and Pearl Farrington. The Ball took place February 22 at the Gym, with George Brown’s music, and Don Brown from Bethel taking pictures. Dancing was enjoyed by all. The Juniors sold refreshments at intermission. 26
