F OREWORD In order to produce an Academy Award motion picture the producers and stars put forth many hours of concentration and work. Likewise, the members of the TALISMAN Staff work many hours, in order, to give the students of Woodrulf the best possible yearbook. Our artists have interpreted the meaning of TALISMAN as a symbol of charm or good luck in many ways on the succeeding division pages. We sincerely hope that in your opinion the 1948 TALISMAN pleases you and truly rates your Academy Award.

r Hila- '34- E. N. WOODRUFF Interest in his fellow man and Peoria was the keynote in the life of E. N. Woodruff, for 24 years Mayor of our city and friend to thousands of it citi- zens. Early in his business career, Mr. Wood- ruff made many contacts which laid the foundation for the understanding of human nature and political insight that contributed largely to his later political and business success. Whether in or out of office, he continued these associ- ations with citizens of all ages and in all walks of life. These friendships were the real basis of the power which carried him to his many triumphs. His acts of charity were widespread, and many were benefitted by his quiet help. A man of simple tastes and habits, Mr. Woodrui loved to read and to enjoy good music and art. Although his read- ing was on many subjects, his main in- terest was government-municipal, state, national, and international. Woodrui High School is one of the many civic improvements fostered by Mr. Woodrui and named in his honor. Always interested in the activities of our school, he kept in close touch with its progress. Through his generosity the Stromberg-Carlson public address system was installed in 1938. The students of our school pay trib- ute to a man whose wholeflife exempli- fied a desire to serve his fellow man and his community.
