Kind, cheerful, and capable, she has endeared herself to Woodruff students both as a teacher of French and English, and as the for- mer -faculty advisor of the Talisman. Deeply interested in all that pertains to our school, she imbues others with the same whole- hearted enthusiasm with which she approaches and successfully carries out whatever task may be assigned. THE MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA The Musical Extravaganza, which was pre- sented November 14, 1939, was a glorious success. Instead of the usual opera or operetta, the Girls' Glee Club, Boys' and Girls' Ensembles, and the Beginning and Advanced A Cappella groups provided the harmonious entertainment. The singing was under the direction of Miss Julia Beoletto, accompanied by Miss Erma Emer- son. Mr. Harold Livingston had charge of the staging and Miss Hazel Aitchison, the costumes. The proceeds oi this production went toward buying robes for the A Cappella Choir. ,U,fiFf f9 left choir , AL Sopranos: Eleanor Biclcel, Martha Boich, Virginia Bollinger, Charlotte Cisua, Roberta Helmick, Joyce Hindryx, Barbara Hughes, Shirley Koch, Norma McKinley, Darlene Morris, Lilah Leah Nichols, Leah Noble, Isabel Place, Blanche Pople, Betty Reyburn, Lois Ryden, Mary Wetzler. Various phases of science are dis- cussed by student and outside speakers. Dis- plays and talks by these people broaden the field of knowledge for many of the members. A pleasant ending to the meetings of the year is the picnic, where everyone participates in the fun. Membership is open to anyone interested in science. SCIENCE PREI-'ECTS Long hours of hard work is the lot ot these people. Prefects are on duty during each lab- oratory period to check out instruments and papers. Other work, which is done after school, consists of clerical work and the setting up of apparatus tor the next day's experiments. The typist devotes one period a day to the Science Department. Student pretects gain much from the experience of giving their service to the school. Membership is by selection ot the in- structors in science OFFICERS OF THE SCIENCE CLUB President ....... WOODRUFF BROADCASTS During the past year, Woodruff has partici- pated in a number of radio programs including six half-hour programs over station WMBD. More than a hundred Woodruff students took part in these programs. Whenever possible, the programs were presented by students who had never be- Eore appeared on the air. 'Ifhe announcing chores were capably handled by Gordon Joyner and Fhomas Autry. Five programs were presented on Sunday afternoons. These broadcasts were designed to acquaint the radio public with some of the new :curses offered to Peoria students. The first :roadcast featured students from the Industrial ind Home Economics departments with music urnished by the Woodruff Girls' Ensemble. Another very interesting broadcast was pre- :ared by the Physical-Education and Social icience departments, with music furnished by the Noodruff band. During the year, every department of our school was represented on the broadcasts, includ- ing the English, Speech, Social Science, Industrial Arts, Music, Physical Education, Modern Lan- guages, Science and Domestic Science depart- ments. These programs were presented through the co-operation of station WMBD and were of real value to the school. The broadcasts gave many students radio experience, and offered informa- tion and entertainment to the people of Central Illinois concerning the activities of Woodruff High. Here's hoping that next year sees even greater opportunities for Woodruff to use the magic' of radio broadcasting. SENIOR CHRISTMAS DANCE In December the Senior Class of Woodruff High attempted for the first time in the history of the school to give a dance. They combined with the management of the Inglaterra in the ticket sale and gave it December 23, just a short while before Saint Nick was scheduled to arrive at countless homes. They called it the Senior Christmas Dance. Charley Cartwright and his orchestra furnished the music. lt was a grand event with a floor show and everything. Those taking part in the floor show were Virginia Bailey, Millard and Bessie Mae Hatcher, Dale DeWitt, Buster Wright, and Norma McKinley. This may be established as another tradition, for this is a tairly new school and traditions are still being set. I-IOMECOMING Woodrutt's first Homecoming was held Novem- ber tenth. This event, which promises to become an annual affair, was planned especially tor the purpose of honoring the alumni with an assembly for the graduates of Kingman and Woodruff High Schools. Speeches were made by Bill Groves, George Kirkpatrick, Jim Grebe, and Ed Porter- tield. The band furnished the music for the gala event. Jean Binder was crowned Queen of the Homecoming. Marge Purdum and Delores Hollis- ter were chosen as attendants. Saturday noon, a parade, led by the Home- coming Oueen, wound through the down-town streets. The trophies for the best floats were' awarded to the Senior class and the Girl Reserves. The football game Saturday afternoon was a terrific battle, with East Peoria coming out on top 14 to 0. - Saturday night a victory dance was held at the Inglaterra Ball Room, with Jack Davis' orches- JUNIOR PROM The highlight of the year! Woodruft's Junior Prom was again a thrilling success. The exciting evening was May three from nine o'clock to the wee hours ot the morning. The throng of Wood- ruff couples that formed the grand march in the Pere Marquette ball room were led by Leo Gorenz and Jean Hinsall to the music of Charlie Cart- wright's orchestra. Those important people behind the scenes, the chairmen, were as tollows: Shirley Coe, in charge of the publicity, John Trefzger, the entertainment chairman, Bob Meints, the tickets, La Von Haz- zard, the invitations, Louise Waters, the decora- tions, George Delaney, in charge of the finances, Russell Buster, the program chairman, Bob Abram, the orchestra, and Marjorie Gorham, the reception chairman. tra playing. C54 -4 ' XJ Setting records proved to be the greatest achievement ot the 1939-'40 Woodruff keglers- With the bowling season nearly ended three of the four individual and team leaderships rest at Woodruff. During the season Tony Shuda's high game of 259 held individual honors, while .lack Bulger's 450 held top laurels as high individual series in the intracity league. As the 1785 rolled by, the team remained the topnotch team activity of the season. When the Talisman went to press, the Wood- ruttites were tied for second place with twelve games remaining in the season's schedule. In individual standing Shuda and Bulger ranked third and fourth respectively with 176 and 175 averages. Leo Sullivan, Tony Shuda and Jack Bulger formed the nucleus tor the organization as they were the only lettermen returning this year. Henry Anthony, .lim Ellis, Jack Lofgren, Bob Luthy, Fred Thomas, Bill Wieland, and Owen Gunn joined the three veterans to make up the two competing Woodruff teams. All will receive letters. We lose Leo and Tony by' graduation, but with eight men returning next tall another good year is predicted. Bo wling -4 X M N 2? ' a W. W 'mx LQ? WOODRUPF We are glad to feature a picture of Mr. Edward N. Woodruff, in the 1940 edition of The Talisman. Mr. Woodruff, whose portrait hangs in the front hall of our school building is the man after whom the E. N. Woodruff High School was named. An outstanding civic leader, Mr. Woodruff served as mayor of the city oi Peoria for ten terms or twenty years, and during his administrations, many note- worthy proiects leading to the progress of our city were realized. Woodruff High School's student body and faculty have no more sincere and enthusiastic booster than Mr. Woodruff, and his keen interest in our school's activities and development, is deeply appreciated by all of us. Our school alumni organization, called the Averyville-Kingman-Woodruff Alumni Associa- tion embraces within its membership, as the name implies, the graduates of the iormer north-side educational institutions, Averyville High School, and Kingman High School, and our present Woodruff High School. One of the principal ob- ALUMNI jectives of the organization is to foster continued interest in, and support for, the various activities of Woodruff High School among the north-side graduates. The Annual Alumni Banquet was held at Woodruff High School on the evening of May 9, 1940, and a large number of alumni participated in the evening's festivities. Pictured above are the officers of the Averyville-Kingman-Woodmtf Alumni Association, meeting with principal L. R. McDonald to formulate plans for the annual Alumni Banquet held on May 9. Left to right seated are: Mr. Wm. Groves, first vice-president, Mrs. Martha Jackson, secretary, Mr. James Grebe, president of the alumni association, and Mrs. Evelyn Timke, treasurer. Standing are- Mr. Ed. Minor, director, Mr. Al Schuh, second vice-president, Mr. Ray Bryan, director, and Mr. L. R. McDonald, principal of the school. Officers not included in the picture were Mrs, Mary Gish Munk, director, Miss June Henninger, director, Mr. Harold Livingston, director, and Mr. Ray Bauman, director. 4 xg.
