A BASEBALL Teamwork, timely hitting, power, the everpresent will to win, and the two great left arms of Jerry Mason and Frank Bennett meant the championship for Jay Settle's horsehiders, the greatest array of diamond demons ever to come out of the halls of Muleville. The team was one without a flaw. Behind the plate was dependable Ernie Barlow, and on third was Pistol Pete Vitale, sparkplug of the infield. ln the shortstop slot was smiling Leon Kilday, deadly in the clutch and with an arm like a rifle. Second base was capably filled by fighting Louie Miraula, who possessed an uncanny knack for getting on base. On first was the power hitting Vic Lapiner, fatal to men on base, who led the team in R.B.l. Captain Gil Carrasco held down left field and possessed one of the league's most feared throwing arms. In center field was the Galloping Greyhound, Dick Adams, Wilson's great centerfielder. Dick's hitting and speed broke many a pitcher's heart. At rightfield was Wayne Nelson, who, along with Adams and Carrasco, made up one of the finest out- fields in the city. The Mule pitching staff consisted of the two mighty southpaws, Frank Bennett and Jerry Mason, who alternately chucked Wilson to the crown. 7frWith spark, hustle, and drive, qualities which Coach Trigg's teams always have, the B horsehiders came through their season with a second place league spot. Top chucker was southpaw Johnny Fouts. Dennis Holt did a fine job behind the plate. On first was heavy hitting Louie Baltz. Making up a terrific keystone combination were Ruben Ybarra and Tiny Gelalich. A TRAINER-Couch Jay Settle our boys to a championship. Opposing squads which felt the sting of the Wilson spikes were Lincoln, Marshall, and Bel- mont. While on their way to a third place standing, the Mule boys were revising the record books right and left. Richard Adams, better known as the human spring, leaped his way to two records. Davey Rosellini and Duane Telliano also set new marks in their respective specialties. The B's and C's came through with a fairly good season. Placing reg- ularly were Emil Britt, shot- put, Jiminez, 100, Henry, 1320, Kersh, high hurdles. C stars were Don Ifill, record breaker in the 660, Pugliese, ditto in the 100, and Garcia, 180. Coach Paul Barthel hammers a starting block for his C and D sprinters.
