It is the realization of this that has led the Echo staff to record for you in words and pictures some of the golden MOMENTS of the past. Each activity, each period of study during all our years together has been governed by twenty-four HOURS of daily TIME out of which we have spun pleasure, content, friend- ship, knowledge, laughters, and, perhaps, tears. TIME moves on, but memories of HOURS that have been pleasantly spent re- main forever. The SECONDS-60 of them-have hurried to make the MINUTESQ then 60 MINUTES evolved into each memorable HOUR. The CLOCKS on the pages of this book mark the good HOURS of our student days. 12 SSS X, S - Q1 ,rr . if II' 1' ' s TIM EFOR CLASSES TIMES WE SHALL In September of 1957 an assembly was held at Woodrow Wilson High School. We, the group assembled, were a number of nervous stu- dents eagerly awaiting our fate. The first few days were rough and hecticg we rode imaginary elevators and searched for lounges that were not there. However, we soon caught on to Woodrow Wilson High School's ways, and with great aims we set out to meet the coming year. At the first class meeting, we elected officers. They were Jerry Turner, Sara Meador, Martha Maxwell, and Sam Cohn. We were happy to have as our class sponsor Mrs. Janet Rodriguez who was appointed to guide us through the next three years. Among our many activities during the year was the Informal Party. Davy Jones' Locker set the mood for a wonderful night that all will remember. Before we knew it, school was out. There were three months ahead to recuperate from the strain of our first year at Woodrow Wilson High School, and to anticipate our junior year. The school term of 1958-1959 began on a sunny September day. Junior Class officers were Jerry Turner, Sara Meador, Jo Ann Cascio, and Sam Cohn. The state of mind of the junior students was quite different from that of the previous year. Woodrow Wilson High School was home to us now, and we were glad to be starting another year. The Junior Class Play, Pride and Prejudice, was a delightful three- act romantic comedy. It was presented with great success. The annual minstrel, directed by Mr. Glenn Sallack, was entitled Kollege Kapersf' Both director and cast worked hard to make this one of the highlights of our Junior year. l4 NEVER FGRGET Finally came the long-awaited day! Our Junior-Senior Prom was held May 9, 1959. The colorful Mardi Gras theme and our fine Jazz Band made that night one to be long remembered. At last, we were seniors. Jerry Turner, Sara Meador, Jo Ann Cascio, and Johnny Quinter were our Senior Class Officers, Co-captains of the football team for the 1959 season were Russell Walls, John Shumate, Barry Huffstutler, and Jerry Turner. Cheering the team on were the Flying Eagle Band and the Woodrow Wilson High School cheerleaders, and an enthusiastic body of students. Highlighting Homecoming Week, the queens, chosen by the Senior boys, made a lovely picture in the parade. Jane Anderson reigned as Homecoming Queen and Peggy Stafford as Miss Flying Eagle. Our Senior Class play, Three Blind Mice, was directed by Mrs. Vass and won the approval of all who saw it. This was followed by the oper- etta, The Belle of the West, the senior Football-Band Party, and the an- nual band concerts. Among other memorable occassions of the year were Kid's Day and our colorful Prom. As guests, instead of hosts and hostesses, we enjoyed this dance given in our honor by the Juniors. Sara Meador reigned beau- tifully as Prom Queen and her attendants Freda Tolliver, Pat Phil- lips, Norma Combs, Julia Hutchinson, Doris Buckles, and Edna White. , -..--,.. -, nw, The last days of our senior year were busy ones. The rushing around and last minute preparations tended to make us forget that soon our high school days would be over. Joy, sadness, gratitude and pride were mingled in the feeling of each senior who received a diploma. Hail to Woodrow Wilson, Alma Mater dear, We shall ever sing thy praises Through the coming years. CHEERLEADERS In any school, the school spirit and pep of the student body is ex- emplified by the cheerleaders. The class of '60 cheered its team in victory and encouraged them in defeat under the leadership of a fine team of cheerleaders-Edna White, Sherry Wood, Patty Anderson, Lewis Cook, and Joey Pat O'Nea1. This peppy little quintet cheered and sang through the Wetest football season on record. Edna and Lewis shared the head position, and damp, dismal weather did not hinder them in the least. They led the crowd in rousing cheers through rain, mist, snow, and sleet. Patty was head cheerleader for the basketball season. New uniforms were added, and the gang looked great as they encouraged the team at every game. Vim, vitality, and good humor were characteristics of these five. The class of '60 will be remembered as the class with real school spirit. The praise for this achievement should go to The Cheerleaders. 73 CCDACHES Coach Lawrence Wiseman became head basketball coach this year. He is looking forward to many outstanding basketball teams. Also an assistant coach in both foot- ball and track, Coach Wiseman has an M.A. degree and teaches plane geometry. Coach Victor Peelish heads the wrestling squad and acts as assistant coach in both football and track. Coach Peelish does a fine job with the wrestling team each year in addition to his valuable contribution to the football and track teams. He holds an M.A. degree and teaches driver education as well as physical education. Coach Nelson Bragg, a former athlete of W. W. H. S. and Marshall College, is head football coach. In addition to his duties as football coach, he has charge of our track squad and assists Coach Peelish with wrestling. Coach Bragg has an M.A. degree and teaches U.S. History. Coach Paul Pettry, a graduate of Shady Spring High School, assumes his new duties this year as assistant basketball coach. For the past five years he has been the boys' physical education instructor. In his new role as assistant coach, he has charge of the junior varsity team and also helps Coach Wiseman with the varsity team. He attended Concord College, where he received a B.S. degree in education. 74 SENIOR LETTERMEN 47 S 4' L ' in Y .v ig fy. fir - 'W ' H' , 1 f 19 2' Ralph Allen William Bair Richard Barkley William Barnard Samuel Cohn '-Us 'E 0 , 59 A , gi' 'Qi gi . If , I ' Russell Walls 3 5 Richard Witt q, Kenny Williams b 75 The 1959 football team had a record of four wins and six defeats. This was an off year for Beckley. They just did not have the man power to keep up with some of the other teams. Even so the boys played hard and were a credit to the school. This year's schedule was one of the roughest in the school's history. We played the Class AAA champion and runner-up, Blue- field and Parkersburg, and the Class AA co-champions, Mullens and Mount Hope. Beckley's wins came over Huntington Central, Oak Hill, Gary, and Logan. The team lost to Mullens, Charleston, Mount Hope, Bluefield, Park- ersburg, and Hinton. The Beckley boys never gave up and with a break or two could have won several more games. 76 Barry Huffstutler, John Shumate, Russell Walls Jeuy Tuinei This year's team was led by co-captains, John Shumate, Russell Walls, Jerry Turner, and Barry Huffstutler. An outstanding group of boys, they proved themselves Worthy to lead the team. Several other boys did a com- mendable job, too. They are Charles Karbonit and Jerry Hunter in the backfield and John Heagarty, Sam Cohn, Jim Vandall, Bill Bair, John Pennington, and Rod Harmon in the line. These boys will be sorely missed next year. Our football coaching staff was headed by Coach Nelson Bragg. He was assisted very ably by Coach Victor Peelish and Coach Lawrence Wise- man. These men Worked unceasingly to bring out the best in the boys. The class of 1960 salutes these three men. We are proud and grateful to have them at Woodrow Wilson. 77 The 1959-60 basketball team had a new coach at the helm. Coach Lawrence Wiseman took over for Jerome Van Meter. Coach Wiseman had been assistant basketball coach for many years. He is a rare blend of ability and wit, and he is one of the most popular persons in the school. Coach Wiseman is a superior man who is truly worthy and capable of fil- ling Coach Van's shoes. Coach Wiseman was assisted this year by Coach Paul Pettry, who for several years had been a physical education instructor at Woodrow Wilson. He works with the boys who are not on the varsity, teaching them the fundamentals of the game. 78 X Rod Harmon C0-CAPTAINS Bill Barnard As usual Beckley's schedule was very tough. The fellows played most of the stronger teams in the state. On the slate were such teams as Oak Hill, Shady Spring, Mullens, Huntington East, Richwood, Logan, South Charleston, Parkersburg, Huntington Central, Mount Hope, Bluefield, Charleston, Hinton, Fayetteville, Gauley Bridge, and the Alumni. The Beckley team was led by co-captains Rod Harmon and Bill Bar- nard, the pivotmen. Other boys Who made their presence felt were John Quintier, Sam Cohn, Jim Easley, Scotty Price, David Davies, and Sam Feazell. Giving added strength on the bench were John Heagarty and Barry Huffstutler. This was one of the best groups of seniors Beckley has had in several years. The seniors were given additional help by some good juniors and sophomores. This team upheld the Beckley tradition of always being tough on the basketball court. 79 ,,,. . As usual Coach Victor Peelish produced a top notch wrestling team. He produced a team that was well coached, well conditioned, and full of fight. They made a superior showing at every match. Beckley wrestled such teams as Shady Spring, Sophia, Mullens, Logan, Hinton, Richwood, and Parkersburg. The team was captained by Racine Thompson, a splendid little wrestler. He was given support by several other seniors. They were Hoby Shumate, Marion Massinople, Ronald Long, and Russell Walls. Wrestling is one of the most demanding of all sports. It takes more endurance and intestinal fortitude than most boys possess. These boys are to be com- mended, for they work long hours to sharpen their skills and yet receive little glory. The student body has been slow to support the team in the past, but we are sure that in the future wrestling will be one of the most popular sports. 80 l l l M Racine Thompson In Coach Peelish, Beckley has one of the finest coaches in the state. He knows all the things that are essential to make a good wrestler, and he knows how to put his ideas across to the boys. Coach Peelish has pro- duced many champion wrestlers in his career at Woodrow Wilson. Some of these boys have gone on to become college stars. Beckley is indeed for- tunate to have Coach Victor Peelish at the school. Woodrow Wilson High School is doubly lucky, because it also has a very fine assistant wrestling coach in Coach Nelson Bragg. He helps the boys who are unable to make the team to develop their physical skills and improve their bodies. A dedicated man, Coach Bragg would be a credit to any school. 8l 3-s K- 1 .ibm . V ln an - X - f' vr u I ll nl.l, - - ,. ' L 1 Beckley again produced a track team capable of giving a good account of itself against the top track squads in the state. The Captains of this year's squad were Charles Karbonit, Richard Witt, and Jon McBride. They led the team through the rugged schedule it faced. The meets that Beckley participated in this year were the Stonewall Jackson Invitational, the Coal- field Conference, the Huntington Relays, the Jaycee Relays, the Beckley Open. the Regional, and the State Track Meet. This year's squad was ably instructed by head coach Nelson Bragg and his assistants, Victor Peelish and Lawrence Wiseman. They drilled 82 Charles Karbonit, Richard Witt the boys in the fundamentals and conditioned each boy for his particular event. The Class of '60 commends these men for their fine efforts on be- half of Woodrow Wilson. ' Track is essential for any boy who is interested in playing another sport, for he must be able to run. Track teaches a boy to run, improves his ability, and gr es him confidence in himself. An exciting and rewarding sport, it is well 'worth the time and energy spent on it. 83 .7- .-J A A... ,. .fb - A 4, J I . ix f,m,,.a.f ' IH , ,. V, My 3 U vi I K. l'.' . Nm., 4 W 3' -, K. To the delight of the members, the band spent the night at Camp Shaw-mi-del- ecca. Everyone had lots of fun and of course hated to leave. School opened for the band with a busy schedule of football games, assemblies, parades, and pep meetings. Just before the end of football season the band took the annual trip to Bristol for the Southeastern Band Festival. The band received a Second Division rating. With the end of football season, out came the concert music. Shortly afterwards, basketball season began. The games called for the songs and cheers of the band once again. Later in the year the band attended the Regional Band Festival at Flperield. Through much hard work and preparation, the three annual concerts given by the band were great successes. At the last concert, which seemed to came all too soon. the seniors were presented with their letters in recognition of hard work and as a token of the happy memories of their wonderful years in the band.
