And this is a word of ad- monishment to iteface the future with courage: the courage of right thinking, courage of conviction, courage that makes one stand when all about have fallen or run away, the courage that God intended when He created man in His own image and after His own likeness. This courage is not the brute kind, so common in animals, savages, the gun- toting outlaw, and some European lead- ers: that brand of courage is born of fear. The courage of an American has its foundation upon spiritual concept and is substantiated by the stamina of righteous- ness. For right is right, since God is Cod, And right the day must wing To doubt would be disloyaltyg To falter would be sin. May God's richest blessings be yours. FRANK B. BUEPO. . . President . . Athletic Chairman . .Secretary-Treasurer Wnudrnw Wilsnll Parent-Teacher Assnnialinn Presidents Message Again the eyes ot the world are turned on the American youth. Again youth must save the old, the very young, and even a world yet to be. Yes, youth must take this old, wrecked world and clear away the debris, and sal- vage the framework ot civilization. Youth, who had no part in the destruction of peace, marches up now to the throne oi democracy and lays upon it a lite more precious than all earth's goldfa sacrifice too great to eulogize, and tor which eter- nity alone can repay. The mature have sown this world in seeds from Satan's own granary, and youth must take the scythe and cut down or crop of bitter weeds, and burn the sheaves, and destroy the seed. lt is youth who will coun- teract the iatetul poison in the cup ot Hitler- ism, by pouring into it their courage, their strength, their good old American grit, and in a little while will offer to a trembling, tearful world a drink filled with lite-giving vitamins. Oh, youth, did you not come into the world for such a time as this? Sincerely MRS. CHARLES A. FANNING. Mrs C. A. Fanning . Mrs B. L. Vining . . Mrs M. F. Leavell . Mrs A. A. Buschman Mrs R. F. HSHBUHN OUR PRINCIPAL We feel that We can not let this opportunity pass of expressing our admiration and respect for our prin- cipal, Mr. G. L. Ashburn. ln all our pleasures he has taken an active party at all our games and contests he has been a rooter on Whom We could rely: at all our parties and dances he and his gracious wife have been a vital part of the evening, at all our assemblies and programs he has remained in the background, yet enjoying our fun and sharing our responsibilities. The students have at all times been Well aware of his inherent qualities-tireless leadership, Wise counseling, and sympathetic understanding, but in these crucial times, we find that he is endowed with an even greater attribute-an actively patriotic spirit. His incessant efforts have inspired the school to a Whole-hearted participation in the war program. By encouraging the buying of War bonds and stamps, by supporting every scrap drive and salvage cam- paign, he has helped us to realize our duty in Wag- ing the battle on the home front, while our former classmates are fighting on the far-flung battle fields of the World. ln this period of conflict and strife, We are fortu- nate to have this patriot and friend of youth as our leader. C. of Woodrow Wilson High School has made a distinct change in its regular routine of military drill by substituting on two days of each week a physical-fitness program. These physical exercises, directed by Coaches Wade Thompson and Doyle Smith, follow the Com- mando type training in line with that given in the pre-flight courses of the Army and the Navyfand are expressly designed to build up the general health, physique, and endurance of each boy. ln the obstacle course, calisthenics, running, jumping, and push-ups, each boy is his own op- ponent. Boxing and wrestling are other forms of drill which aid in individual development. This varied program has led to a definite build-up in morale and a decided pleasure in the day's work. Another distinct change in policy introduced by Colonel Neher this year is that of promoting only 4-B's and 4-A's t the rank of commissioned officersf T' Through his hard work and careful attention to the multiplicity of details, Colonel Neher has brought the Woodrow Wilson Corps to its pres- ent size and efficiency. His distinctive character- istics having united to maintain an excellent esprft- de-corps among the seven hundred students under his command and have kept before them at all times an example of an honest man and an efficient soldier. Senrqe Heyster The Woodrow Wilson High School Band, directed by Colo- nel George Ftoyster, has taken an active part in varied school and civic activities. This mili- tary organization provided in- spiring martial music at foot- ball games, for pep squad marching, for weekly military parades, and school assembly programs. A colorful part of downtown parades, sponsored by the Dallas Chamber of Com- merce and other civic organiza- tions, was the Woodrow Wilson High School Band. For the P.T.A. and Dads' Club programs, and on such occasions where the complete band was too large, small ensembles were formed to entertain. Free Sunday after- noon band concerts have made enjoyable performances for the public. This year the band's part in the Greater Dallas Music Fes- tival was a Victory Concert, planned to stimulate the buy- ing of war bonds. The constant, conscientious work of Colonel George Roy- ster has been the major factor in the band's excellence, Pa- tience, courtesy, and sound mu- sical instructions are qualities which make Colonel Ffoyster a fine and truly appreciated band director. J by f' Sergeant Fnrster After serving twenty-four years in the regular army, and coming out a top sergeant, Ser- geant Forster has made himself invaluable to the Woodrow Wil- son Cadet Corps with his ex- perience as a soldier and inter- est in improving the Corps. Ser- geant Forster served in the Span- ish-American War, the lndian Campaign at Walker, Minne- sota, made four trips to the Phil- ippines, totaling five and one- half years, and served in World War l. He was wounded twice, and received the Order of the a - , n' ,n ' A .' Purple Heart by congressional action for outstanding service in Cuba, where he was wounded. He was retired in 1920, and since then has served fifteen years here at Woodrow, on the De- tached Enlisted Men's List. Staff Sergeant Claude Thempsnn Staff Sergeant Claude Thomp- son came to Woodrow Wilson High School at mid-term to be in charge of the rifle team and the rifle range during the marks- manship course. He was at A. and M. six years before coming here, and coached the rifle cmd pistol team in l939-40. His team was undefeated and untied, win- ning the National lntercollegiate Rifle Championship. Although he has been here only a short time, Sergeant Thompson is al- ready well liked by the cadets. Mrs. Fern Swindells Mrs. Fern Swindells, secretary to the Commandant, is greatly appreciated by all the cadets because of her friendly smile and helpful assistance. xi' vszhgg 5 t I Fall Iack Edwards Aubrey Ferguson lack Ferguson Fall Frank Burpo Royal Brantley Albert Carrell William Forsyth Sam Houston I.
