Editors Emily Hayes Ronnie Battles Sponsor Mrs. Bernice Day i Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end. We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose. We'd fight and never loose. Those were the days . . . Once upon a time there was a tavern Where we used to raise a glass or two Remember how we laughed away the hours. And dreamed of the great things we would do. Just tonight I stood before the tavern Nothing seemed the way it used to be 6 In the glass I saw a strange reflection, Was that lonely fellow really me 7 Through the door there came familiar laughter I saw your face and heard you call my name Then the busy years went rushing by us . . . We lost our starry notions on the way If by chance I'd see you in the tavern, We'd smile at one another and we'd say . . . n Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end We'd sing and dance forever and a day We'd live the life we choose. 13 . . . Oh yes, those were the days $ jRSi? Future Homemakers of America The eight-sided emblem symbolizes the significant purposes of the organization. The name of the organization, and the motto appear around the border. In the center is a house which represents a home where there is truth, love, security, and faith. This home is supported by two hands, suggesting that the future homes of America are in the hands of its youth. The hand on the right represents the husband, father, or brother in the home. The h3nd on the left is the wife, mother, or sister. Both hands work together to foster and support strong homes today and provide a firm foundation for homes tomorrow. The rays extending to and from the home suggest the influence the home has on the community and the community has on the home. 119 Distributive Education OFFICERS President - -- -- -- -jay Dykes Secretary ------ Linda Evans Treasurer-------------Sherry Arthur Vice President ----- Carl Teal ROW Is Mr. Mosley, Mary Minor, Brenda Sapp, Sherry Arthur, Linda Evans, Dwight Miller, Angie Pearson, Judy Shoemaker, Mary Nicholson, Terry Daniels, Drendal Sargent, Miss Neugent. Lee Generals - 10-3. They did it with an inspired defensive unit leading the way. In fact, tire only touchdown scored all night was on a recovered fumble run back by Tony Nathan. The defense held Lee’s heralded rushing game to only 96 yards. Lee scored first on a 37 yard field goal by James Barber. That was it for the night for the Generals as any other efforts were turned back by the defense, which turned up five turnovers. For the offense, led by Jimmy Hammock, credit is given for keeping the Generals backed up most of the night. Dixon led Colonel rushers - gaining 54 yards, followed by Alford with SO and Hammock with 37. Colonels Dump Hayes 22-6 The Colonels came to Lawson Field on Thursday, Sept. 14, and left the stadium with a 2-0 record. This feat was accomplished by defeating the Hayes Pacesetters 22-6. For all practical purposes, the game was over after die first quarter, as the potent Colonel offense scored 22 quick points and then sat back to watch the defense go to work. Scoring for the Colonels were Hammock, Dixon, Alford, and Price. GAME STATS First Dow ns ... Rushing Yard ... Passing Yard ... Passes ... Punts ... Fumbles lost ... Yards Penalized ... w. They came away with win 3 in as many starts. The Colonel offense was awesome, mounting over 300 total yards behind quarterback Jimmy Hammock. Scoring for the Colonels were Alford and Hammock, with the PATs kicked by Buzz Walsh. The defense, led by Holland and Price, stopped the Rebels cold all night. Other defensive standouts were Graham and Isbell. 230 Colonels Rip Ramsay 20-6 GAME STATS £ams Wgodlyn, First Downs ... 11 18 Yds. Rushing ... 59 276 Yds. The offense went to work in the first half, scoring all their points early and failing to mount any drives in the second half. The defense was tough as usual, allowing only one touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the ha If. Scoring for the Colonels were Hammock, Washington (2), and Buzz Walsh kicked the extra points. For the defense, Tony Nathan again harried the opposing quarterbacks, stealing three Ram passes. 231 Vikings Beat Colonels 20-6 The toss to Huffman was the first after four victories for the Colonels who had entered the game with a No. G ranking. Hard-working quarterback Jimmy Hammock, who ran die ball 18 times and passed it 17, got 81 yards with his rushes and 58 with five pass completions. Left halfback Curtis Dixon, who made 59 yards in 14 tries, got Woodlawn’s touchdown on a 20 yd. run. It was set up by teammate Kenny Rogers’ recovering a Viking fumble at the Huffman 25. Dixon carried the ball on diree straight plays to get it home. Buzz Walsh's kick, which might have tied the game at that second-period point, was blocked. The Colonels had hard workers on defense in end Kirk Price, tackle Bobby Isbell, linebackers Bubba Holland and Mike Allison, and backers-up Rick) Jones, Rogers and Ronnie Garzarek. Colonels Whip Lions 20-12 Victory over the West End Lions was No. 5 in six starts for the Colonels who rank 10th among state 4A teams. The Colonels allowed but five Lion pass completions in 16 attempts. Two of those were Intercepted, with Steve Monk speeding one back 40 yards for a late fourth-quarter touchdown and Bubba Holland intercepting the other just when the Lions appeared menacingly close to a tie in the fading seconds of the game. Tony Nathan, who got a hand on the pass that Holland intercepted, Kenny Rogers, and Ronnie Garzarek joined Holland and Monk in the tough Colonel secondary-. Further, the alert R. Garzarck got the tying touchdown for Woodlawn in the first minute of the third period by picking off a fumble and returning it 6ft yards. Buzz Walsh kicked the first of two second half extra points for him to give Woodlawn die lead at 13-12. Jets Roll Past Colonels 27-6 The Homecoming Colonels lost to the Banks Jets by a score of 27 to 6 in a game desperately wanted by the Colonels. The Woo diawn score was by Steve Washington on a 55-yard pass play from Jimmy Hammock. The score came late in the third period and the attempted extra point was no good. Standouts for the defense on the Woodlawn team were Bubba Holland, Tony Nathan, Gary Spears, and Kirk Price. Raiders Ruin Homecoming 26-7 This year’s homecoming was spoiled by the Colonels 26-7 loss to the Phillips Red Raiders. There were veiy few bright spots as the Raiders dominated play on both offense and defense all night. The only score for the Colonels all night came late in the second quarter, after Ronald Garzarek recovered a fumble on the 18 yard line. Curtis Dixon scored with Buzz Walsh kicking the extra point. For the defense. Peyton Zareour, Bubba Holland, Kirk Price, Steve Monk, and Bill Ether-edge were standouts. 235 Colonels Burn Hawks 21-0 It was Hawk season and the Woodlawn Colonels rode the passing arm of Buzz Walsh to blank the Glenn Hawks, 21-0. After a penalty which put Wood lawn on the Hawk 30, Walsh hit split end Steve Washington with a 30-yard buzz bomb and the Colonels led. The second quarter was all Woodlawn. After recovering a fumble it took ten plays for Curtis Dixon to go in for the second TD. The last score came in die third quarter after a punt, the Colonels moved to the three, and Kirk Price drove in from the two. Walsh booted the point and Woodlawn led. 21 to 0. Defense stars were Gary Speers. Bubba Holland, and Tony Nathan. 23 Jackets Spoil Finale 20-6 1973 Varsity Cheerleaders CINDY BARRETT - Jr. SHEILA WILLIS - Sr. GINA BRANDON - Jr. 1972-1973 B-Team Cheerleaders Beverly Morrow.
