As the season progressed, the team indicated great potential as a good young team made up mostly of juniors and sophomores who had little experience and some seasoned seniors with some good experience. The team proved itself by having the best season in three years. They finished 3 and 6, having been a threat to all the city opponents. 10 ALAN WOOD, End Woodlawn Falls to Rams In the opening game of the 1968 football season , Woodlawn scored its first and only touchdown of the game in the second half on a 33 -yard pass from Osborne to Wood. Despite an enthusiastic student body and a spirited team, Woodlawn fell to Ramsey. 13 to 7. Colonels Battle Banks In the last quarter Garrett moved the Colonels down field on a beautiful drive for their only touchdown: a pass to Whitaker. Outstanding in the game were Gantt with his 44 -yard punting average and Morton at lineback. Banks won the game 28 to 7. JIM MORTON, Back | GREG GANTT CHUCK WHITAKER, Back JERRY GARRETT , Back Colonels Vex Vikings Three was the lucky number for Wood- lawn. Junior wingback Terry Anderson, slamming through Huffman ' s defense for 3 touchdowns, and senior end Mike Hale, alertly falling on 2 fumbles, were the key men for Woodlawn as the Colonel team won their first game of the season. They trounced the Vikings of Huffman 27 to 6. MIKE HALE, End JIMMY SELF, Center WAYNE LEATHERS, Back TERRY ANDERSON, Back MIKE BISHOP, Back MIKE SWEATMAN, Guard GREG BUTLER, Back RAMON ROGERS, Tackle Woodlawn Over Carroll The best seat in the stadium at the Wood- lawn -John Carroll game was the 50 -yard line because that was where the action was as the tough Colonel defense held the Cavs to small gain. Doug Osborne completed a 26 -yard pass to Mike Hale for the only score in the game. Standouts for defense for Woodlawn were Mike Bishop and Greg But- ler. The Colonel ' s line, led by Ramon Rogers, Scott Langner, and Mike Sweatman, did not allow Carroll to penetrate far into Woodlawn territory the entire evening. The game ended with a score of Woodlawn 6, John Carroll 0. GORDON ROBBINS, End CARL PRUITT, Back JOHN PUCKETT, Guard CHARLES FREW, Tackle Woodlawn — Jones Valley Woodlawn opened the scoring by driving 57 yards in seven plays, led by Billy Horst. Despite the early lead and outstanding de- fense by Langner, Rogers, and Bean, Jones Valley came back to defeat the Colonels by a score of 14 to 7. Woodlawn showed the West End Lions a burst of offense by scoring on runs of 48 yards by Horst and 66 yards by Osborne and a 52 -yard pass play from Osborne to Wood. It was an exciting and well-played game but the Lions were aroused and defeated the Colonels by an upsetting score of 27 to 19. A never - say -die Woodlawn team made a brilliant last -minute touchdown drive to win this big one 27 to 21. In the first half the Colonels were held to 23 . yards rushing, two first downs, and 67 yards through the air, including a 46-yard TD pass from Doug Os- borne to Greg Butler. Phillips came back and scored two touchdowns so that when the half time came, Woodlawn was down by one touchdown. But in the second half it was the Colonels who provided the offensive power and clutch defense as they twice fought from behind to win. Brilliant receptions of Osborne, passes by ends Alan Wood and Mike Hale, along with Butler, and tough running by Billy Horst and Jim Morton gave the Colonels victory momentum. Colonels defeat Brownies 56-45 The Woodlawn Colonels played their first home game against a tough Jones Valley team, but, led by the offensive and defensive play of Ralph Smith, the Colonels won this most important home game. Leading scorers for the game were Smith with 18 points, Doyle Gray with 15, and Ron Harper with 13. Gray also won the Ball Hawk award for being the best defensive player. The Colonels were off to a good start, the students were supporting with great en- thusiasm, and the feeling persisted that again the cagers of Woodlawn would come through with another City Championship. Woodlawn enjoyed a lead the entire game. Doug Osborne won the Ball Hawk award for defense. Colonels defeat Yellow Jackets Always a formidable rival, the Ensley Yellow Jackets strived hard to knock the winning Colonels for a loss, but this was not to be. Playing excel- lent basketball, both offensively and defensively, Woodlawn hit 20 out of 30 foul shots and took the game by a score of 62 to 46. 132 Woodlawn Rips Jets Ralph Smith scored 55 Of the 97 points scored in the game against the Jets of Banks, who managed to rack up 35 points. In one of the most dramatic endings of any game of the season, the Colonels were aiming for the 100 mark, but time ran out, leaving them with a score on the board of 97 to 35. 133 Colonels 59, Brownies 44 The Colonels invaded Brownie country for their second game with Jones Valley. By this time, Woodlawn was heading for what looked like a city championship and the Brownies were aiming to stop the con- tenders. Determined Colonels maintained their record, winning again. • 1 , f - J iA. 4 m r ■L . The Colonels fought hard to maintain a re- cord of wins but fell in defeat to the G adsden team 55 to 60. 135 Looking at a championship It was time for someone to beat Wood - lawn if ever they were to be drprived of the City Championship and the Ensley Yellow Jackets thought they could do it. In one of the most exciting and breathless games of the season the Colonels came through again with a victory, bringing them within one game of the coveted championship. The game ended with the Colonels 53 and the Ensley team 44. 136 We ' re number one! The Colonels came down to the last game of the regular season just one victory short of another City Championship, and the Jets of Banks stood in the way. In a highly exciting and competitive game, the determined and dogged Colonels gave their best, and defeated the Jets a second time, this time by a score of 67 to 59. And so it goes Another successful basketball season gone, another City Championship won, another plaque to hang i ' n the front hall along with all the others showing championship teams of other years. We shall long remember Coach McNair ' s faithful belief that his boys could win it, and the over- whelming support offered by a dedicated student body. 138 W-Day, 1 968 honors athletes Howell Kirby gets the Fred Sington award. We have tried to do this in the 1969 Woodlog. More color has been added along with other modern ideas to make the book more ap- pealing to you. It has been a great pleasure for us to work on this Woodlog and we hope you enjoy it now and in the future.
