WOODLOG WOODLA WN HIGH SCHOOL BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA VOLUME XL Editor — Jerry Bailey Asst. Editor — Gail Ethridge Advisor — Annie Katherine Looney i Great and beautiful character comes by filling well the ordinary offices of God. To a wise person who builds on this foundation all in life has great meaning. To teach well demands much, for plodding and prodding is not the teacher’s work. It is rather inspiration, the flashing of enthusiasm. Because art belongs to life itself, we are grateful for that which she imparts. Because she truly teaches, and is an inspiration in speech and action, and life the WOODLOG 1966 is dedicated to Mrs. Inez Lyerly Respected teacher, beloved friend. The Wonderful World of Woodlawn High We pause mid the wonders of Life And the magic of Science, To bring forth on these pages The golden moments of time Just past. It is our wish to walk again The paths of achievement, fun, Beauty and skill; To ski the winter slopes and Enjoy the summer sun. We set them all before You— Come walk with us!! 4 WoocLlawn's Doors Conceal “Knowledge is power.” The purpose of our years of schooling is to gain knowledge. Class and current events stimulate the inquisitive student, prod him into an awareness of the importance of his learning in an increasingly complex world. A World of Knowledge Teachers are constantly striving to instruct us, to invade our minds, and enfold us with understanding. Knowledge is everywhere at our disposal; but we must seek it and use it to the best advantage. A school building is constructed of steel and cement, strong and permanent; but it is designed to accommodate an ever-changing flow of students. Year after year buses empty their loads each morning, and people stream in waves into the hallways and classrooms. To the rhythm of bells, tides of people wash in and out of the rooms and corridors and finally back to the buses, leaving the building empty. Carl Sandburg in his poem “Skyscraper” says “It is the men and women, boys and girls so poured in and out all day that give the building a soul of dreams and thoughts and memories. As each individual forms a part of the mass, so each personality contributes to the whole of WOODLAWN’S soul—that abstract thing we call school spirit. This small portion of each student remains in WOOD-LAWN forever. 9 Students Each day students of Wood-lawn participate in many varied activities. No longer does school consist merely of reading, ’riling, and ’rithmetic. Our education puts emphasis on physical education, competitive athletics, and fellowship, that we might become more complete persons and enjoy a fuller life. Participate in Varied Activities II Table of Contents Organizations Athletics Features Advertisements FACULTY Our Principal, Mr. James R. Tarrant 14 The students and faculty of Woodlawn High School are indeed honored and most fortunate to have as- their new principal, Mr. James R. Tarrant.
