Our Young School Has a History . . . AbouT Tive years ago, The siTe where Woodlawn I-Iigh School sTands Today was only a TracT oT Iand in The woods. I-Iow Then, you aslc, is iT such a busy nerve cenTer oT educaTion Today. IT had been TeIT Tor some Time a high school was needed in This secTion oT The ciTy. So The Caddo Parish School Board spenT a greaT deal oT Time invesTigaTing The needs and The exacT IocaTion Tor such a school. Many popuIaTion surveys were made and TinaIIy Two TracTs oT land ToTaIing 50 acres were purchased in The souThern porTion oT ShreveporT aT 7340 WyngaTe Drive in Sherwood Parlc. The land had To be cleared aTTer purchase. In TacT, The siTe was only Then incorporaTed inTo The ciTy IimiTs and IaTer WyngaTe STreeT was dedicaTed. The School Board Tound iT necessary To revise The budgeT several Times. ATTer some ThirTy proposed sIceTches had been submiTTed by The archiTecTuraI Tirm oT Wiener, Morgan and O'NeaI, a special meeTing oT The School Board was held in July oT I958 and Tinal plans by The archiTecT were approved and The board granTed auThoriTy To adverTise Tor bids. The conTracT was awarded To W. A. McMichael ConsTrucTion Company in AugusT I958 aT a cosT oT 252,266,444 CompIeTed aT a Tinal cosT oT 52,660,300 in The summer oT I960, The building was occupied by iTs TirsT sTudenT body oT approximaTeIy IOOO sTudenTs in SepTember I960. OrganizaTion oT The school program Tor iTs TirsT year began in January I960. The principal and oTher key adminisTraTors were soon appoinTed and plans goT under way. I:uTure sTudenTs had or- ganized Tours oT The building during iTs Tinal days oT compIeTion. EguipmenT and supplies Tor all deparTmenTs in The school were ordered. The STudenT Council was organized in March I96O wiTh The seven schools supplying The sTudenTs elecTing members. This charTer group meT oTTen and was largely responsible Tor seIecTing The school colors oT royal blue and scarIeT, The KnighT as The school mascoT, The name oT The yearboolc and school paper, a ring company and a sTandard ring design, and wriTing The words Tor The Alma MaTer Tor which Mr. Richard Jennings and Mr. Melvin Simmons wroTe The music. A Tull program oT sTudy was oTTered in The TirsT year including all Types oT aThleTic compeTiTion and a uniT oT The NaTionaI DeTense CadeT-Corps. The TirsT year oT operaTion ran smooThly Tor The young organizaTion which graduaTed I75 seniors aT iTs TirsT graduaTion exercise in June I96I. Early in November oT This our second year Woodlawn underwenT a Two-day evaluaTion by a commiTTee represenTing The SouThern AssociaTion oT Secondary Schools and Colleges and was placed on Their accrediTed IisT. We have chosen The modern designs oT our building To seT The Theme oT our I962 Accolade because The unusual, aTTracTive mosaic design on The ends OT our main building has already be- come a Thing To remember. So we seT The sTage wiTh iT and conTinue Through The boolc using briclc designs and large areas oT whiTe space To Iceep beTore us The idea ThaT our educaTionaI program is as modern and geared To The space age as our building is. I-IAIL ALMA MATER KNIOHTS SO TRUE, CLOTI-IED IN SCARLET AND ROYAL BLUE OUR FAITH AND LOVE WE PLEDGE TO TI-IEE WRITTEN I-IIGI-I IN LIBERTY. YOUR LAURELS ARE VAST AND ARE SURE AS TI-IE DAWN WE PRAISE TI-IEE FOREVER AND EVER VVOODLAVVN.
